Soren had no idea what was happening and he hated it.
It had been five days since they arrived at Emberfall and Lucius, for all the promises of friendship he had made, was a hard man to see.
He had tried thrice with excuses from his Beta about being busy and trying to get back into the day to day running of his pack but Soren could smell bullshit from a mile away and right now, his nose was in overdrive.
They were planning something and Lucius was convieniently leaving him out of the loop. And not talking about the men he had watching him
They were not very slick at pretending, considering it was a huge palace and one does not just walk past a person multiple times in a day except the said person was on their path for a reason.
It was how Soren knew Lucius did not trust him. If he had people watching him then that is what it meant.
A knock came
"Enter"
The door opened and Willow walked in.
"You summoned me, father?"
Soren turned around but said nothing in response.
Willow stood in the doorway, her hands clasped in front of her and her eyes fixed on a point somewhere past his shoulder. It was the first time they had seen each other since the encounter at the camp.
"Father, please let me..."
"Not a word from you, Willow."
Her mouth closed.
He crossed the room slowly, and she flinched.
"Come in, close the door behind you and take a seat." he gestured to a chair.
She did as he asked and sat.
He took the chair across from her and watched her.
"You betrayed me," he began. "And you cost me my place in the palace that I helped build."
Tears gathered in her eyes. "Father, I am so sorry. I did not mean..."
"Did you not?"
"I was angry." Her voice cracked. "And I was hurt and I lashed out."
"And I am willing to forgive you." Soren said.
Willow stared at him. "What?"
"I understand why you did it." His voice had gone soft. "And you were right to feel those things, Willow. I am willing to forgive you and look past everything. The truth is out now and honestly, it has gotten a great weight off my chest."
She was crying now, openly, tears tracking down her cheeks. "Yes. Yes, Father. I am so sorry. I am so sorry."
He rose and pulled her into his arms.
She went into them like a child, her face pressed against his chest, her hands gripping the back of his shirt, and he held her, one hand smoothing her hair while she cried against him.
"Shh," he murmured. "It is over now. We will move forward, together."
"Thank you," she whispered. "Thank you, Father."
He patted her hair once then stepped back, his hands settling on her shoulders.
"With that being said," he said, "I want to know what is going on with you and Lucius."
Willow blinked. The tears were still wet on her face, and for a moment she did not seem to understand the words. "What?"
"Lucius," Soren repeated patiently. "You and he. What is going on between you?"
"Nothing is going on, Father. He and I have nothing together. I swear."
Soren looked at her.
"I see." He muttered. "That is a disappointment."
"I’m sorry?"
"You seem to be forgetting that we are at war. It does not matter that we are here and that it looks as if we are working the same side. We are still at war. Lucius is not to be trusted for any reason whatsoever. Do you understand me?"
"Yes, Father."
"And I am going to need you to get to know him." Soren leaned forward, his elbows on his knees. "Get him to trust you."
Willow’s brow furrowed. "I do not understand."
"What do you not understand, Willow? It is simple." He smiled."Make Lucius fall for you. Do whatever it takes."
"Father..."
"I need to know what he is up to with Ayla." Soren cut her off. "He is not telling me everything. He brought her here for a reason, and he will not tell me what that reason is, and I want to know why. I want to know what he plans to do with her." He leaned in. "Can you do that for me?"
Willow’s hands were trembling in her lap. "I guess so."
"You guess?" Soren frowned at her.
"I am sure I can, Father." The words came stronger. "I can do it."
"Good." He smiled again. "That is what I want to hear. Do you know where he is now?"
"No."
"I need you to find out," Soren said. "And go to him."
"But Father, it is quite late, and..." Willow stopped speaking when she saw the look of impatience on her father’s face.
"I will find out and I will go to him."
"Good."
He reached out and cupped her face, his thumb brushing the tear track from her cheek. "Let me know what he says," he said softly. "Coax him. Ask him the truth. Ask him what he wants with Ayla. And when you know, you come back to me. Understood?"
"Yes, Father."
"I am choosing to keep my faith in you, daughter." His eyes held hers. "Do not let me down, okay?"
"I will not."
He released her.
She walked to the door, and her hand was on the latch when he spoke again.
"Willow."
She turned.
"You are my daughter," he said. "Whatever else happens here, remember that. Everything I do, I do for this family."
She nodded, and she was gone.
...
Willow walked down the corridor with her hands shaking.
She could not believe it. She could not believe her own father had just asked her to give herself for information. To do whatever it took.
She pressed her fingers to her temples and kept walking.
A maid soon began approaching and Willow recognized her as the girl who had told Lucius about Ayla’s questions by the stream.
"Where is Lucius?" Willow asked, rounding on her.
The girl stopped, startled at Willow’s question. "Why do you..."
She did not finish her statement before the back of Willow’s hand struck her across the cheek.
Mira staggered, her hand flying to her face, her eyes filling with shock and fear.
"Where I come from," Willow said pleasantly, "maids do not get to ask questions such as the one you were about to voice." She smiled. "Now, I am going to ask you again. Where can I find your lord, Lucius?"
"He is in his study," she whispered.
"Is he now?" Willow’s smile widened. "Point me to its direction."
Mira pointed down the corridor, toward a wing of the palace that was darker than the rest, lit by fewer torches.
Willow looked at the direction, then back at the girl.
"Now, that was not so hard, was it?"
