AYLA
The audacity to think to touch me, I bristled with anger.
Lucius was right in his assessment of Alpha Kieran and his brutish sons. He had told me about how uncouth they were especially the first son.
I would have to think it was the one who embraced me, touched me without permission.
But something seemed familiar about them, I thought, my footsteps slowing.
Something I could not quite place my finger on but was bugging me incessantly. They looked harmless unlike Lucius’ words about how dangerous they were. If anything, they both seemed surprised that I did not recognize them which simply implied they expect me to know who they were, which meant they believed we had met before.
Lucius did not mention that when we spoke on our way here.
"Where the hell did you go?"
I stopped in my tracks and turned toward the voice.
Amara stood at the mouth of the corridor, arms folded, her pupil-less eyes catching the torchlight like twin pools of milk. I could never get used to them
"To get some air." I said.
Amara regarded me with a look of suspicion.
"You know Lucius asked us to stick together. You cannot wander off in this place where you know no one."
"Do I really know no one?" I blurted.
Her eyes narrowed to slits.
"What do you mean by that?"
"I don’t know" I said. "Something about this place feels very familiar. I think I have been here before somehow."
She did not respond.
"Have I been here?" I pressed.
"Come with me" She ignored my question. "We need to get you inside. This is enemy’s territory and it is not safe for you at all."
I followed her into the room.
The room they had given us was small but fine, with a fire already crackling in the hearth and a window that looked out over the palace gardens. I took the chair by the fire and Amara took the one by the door.
I tried to think of Lucius and what exactly he was doing now my mind summoned the faces of the princes instead.
The one with the amber eyes, who had pulled me into his arms before I could think to stop him. Damon, he had called himself. There had been relief in his voice. Raw, desperate relief at seeing me and it did not seem fake.
And the other one, I did not get his name looked at me with such hurt when I had snatched my hand away from him. I had seen it flicker across his face in that moment that I had been tempted to apologize immediately.
Who were they?
What were they to me, that their pain should feel like my own?
I pressed my palms to my knees and breathed. I should be worried for Lucius’ safety and not thinking of other men.
So why could I not stop their faces from coming to mind no matter how hard I tried?
A knock came at the door, and I startled so badly I nearly overturned the chair.
"Who is it?" Amara called.
"Your meal, my ladies."
Amara crossed to the door and opened it. A servant girl stepped in, head bowed so low I could see only the crown of her hair.
It was there again, that faint sense of recognition, the same one that had been dogging me all day. I could not place it but I somehow knew this person too.
She crossed to the table, set the tray down, and turned to leave, her eyes never once lifting.
"Stop," I said.
Amara looked at me in question. The girl froze.
"Raise your head, please."
The girl hesitated then slowly lifted her chin. Her eyes met mine and I watched them go wide with shock.
"You know me," I said.
Before she could answer, Amara stepped between us like a wall.
"What do you think you are doing?" She asked the girl, her voice cracked like a whip. "Get out of here."
The girl jolted. Her gaze cut to Amara, and whatever she saw there sent her stumbling backward but she looked at me once more before she fled and the door closed behind her, leaving me standing in the middle of the room with my heart pounding in my chest.
"You saw that, didn’t you?" I turned on Amara. "She recognized me."
"I saw nothing but a disrespectful servant who gazed upon the faces of her betters." Amara’s voice was so calm it made my skin prickle. "She will be dealt with."
"No, Amara. I am pretty sure she knows me. She looked at me like..." I stopped. My hands were shaking. "I can’t get over the fact that I may know this place. This pack. All these people... it is like I’m walking through a room full of mirrors and every one of them knows my face but me."
Amara watched me for a long moment. Her face gave nothing...it never did, that white, bloodless mask of hers.
"Get some rest," she said finally. "I will have some medicine brewed for you. The fall seems to have made you delusional."
"I am not..."
"The fall," she repeated, "seems to have made you delusional."
I blinked.
"You are right, I am definitely imagining things" I said.
She stared at me for a long moment before she nodded.
"Stay here. I will find the healing chambers and return with the brew"
I waited until she was out of the room and then I walked to the door, pressing my ear against it.
I could no longer hear her footsteps.
I slipped out of the room and made my way down the corridor.
I had no idea where I was going but I had to know if I had been here before. What was Amara hiding from me? Why did Lucius fail to mention it?
I could feel a nagging sense that there was something I was missing and I had to figure it out. It felt to me like a matter of life and death.
