Miranda paced the length of her chambers and back.

Her bare feet made almost no sound against the polished stone floor, but the movement did little to quiet the storm inside her.

She had thought Ayla being here, within reach unaware of what she truly was was indeed a gift from the mooon goddess herself but Amara’s presence changed everything.

She had been right when she said Miranda was not as powerful as she was. Last night, while the girl slept, Miranda had slipped into her chambers and worked the spell quietly. She had touched Ayla’s forehead and whispered the incantation. Tried to reach into the girl’s mind but nothing worked.

It was as though Ayla’s memories had been buried beneath something deeper than she could reach.

Miranda lifted her eyes to the mirror across the room.

All she had ever wanted was power... more power than she had been gifted. Miranda’s fingers curled.

She approached the mirror slowly and her reflection stared back at her. She could see the fine lines beneath her eyes.

She frowned and moved closer.

There were more now. They had not been there the last time she had looked. Miranda turned her face slightly toward the light and her lips tightened.

"No."

She dragged her fingers over the skin beneath her eyes as though she could smooth the years away by force.

She was aging faster now.

The Omega slaves kept her alive, kept the worst of it at bay, but it was never quite enough. One girl’s untainted blood could buy her a season, perhaps two but the power in Ayla’s veins, that could buy her forever. She would not have to depend on weak Omegas brought to her by desperate men.

It could make her untouchable, eternal, beyond the reach of time or the slow rot of mortality.

She could already imagine it.

Every Alpha kneeling in front of her, kingdom bending to her powers. No one would ever be able to take anything from her again.

Miranda smiled then the smile disappeared.

And the child, Ayla was simply letting herself be dragged from one stupid king to the next, docile as a lamb, oblivious to what she carried in her blood.

Miranda’s mouth twisted.

Morgana had possessed the power to rule the world. She could have become the greatest being to ever walk the earth. Instead, she had allowed herself to be distracted by a man.

A mate.

Who had convinced her that love was more important than power.

Did Amara think she would not notice that Lucius Veyr was the reincarnation of Caelan, Morgana’s mate.

The Moon Goddess did have a sense of humor. A cruel one. All these years, all the kings she had served under many kings in her hunt for the power that had died in Morgana’s veins. She had even gone back to the moon goddess’ service in hope that she would bestow that light upon her.

But instead it had bloomed in an Omega and it had been hidden from her until it was nearly too late. The Omega Dualis had been under her nose all the while.

There was no use crying over what might have had been if she had discovered her sooner. Right now, she had to find a way to weaken Amara before she could get to Ayla.

The door slid open behind her.

Miranda did not turn. There was only one person in this palace who entered her chambers without knocking, and he had been avoiding her for days.

"Where have you been?" she demanded. "I have summoned you for days, Henry."

"Miranda, I cannot..."

"Stop." she silenced him.

She turned back toward the mirror and for a few moments, she said nothing. Her fingers rose again to her face. She smoothed the skin beneath her eyes, studying herself.

"What happened with the Alphas?" she asked. "Why have they not heeded my calls? They swore the loyalty of their bloodline to me in exchange for Morgana’s death."

"The people who swore their loyalty to you are long dead, Miranda." He answered "You forget that most of them are unaware of what transpired. It has been so long ago."

"Then find me the ones who are aware and educate the ones who are not. I will not be ignored."

Henry sighed.

"And my daughter?"

Miranda stopped. She looked over her shoulder.

"What about her?"

"She is still suffering in the dungeons."

Miranda’s expression remained blank.

"I could not care less about your daughter, Henry. She is alive, and that is all that matters to me at the moment. Now send the riders again and get me what I want."

"The gates are locked. If I send anyone, it would rouse the princes suspicions."

Miranda grunted.

He was right. Everything was already too precarious.

Ares had sealed the palace...some fiction about scouts and an attack but it was a cage built to hold Lucius and the girl inside where she could not slip away. Any rider Miranda sent now would be stopped and questioned and the last thing she wanted was for the princes to look her way with suspicion.

They all trusted her and she would need their trust to do what she had to do.

She had to lay low for now as irritating as that was.

"Fine" she finally answered. "We will wait."

Henry exhaled quietly as Miranda turned back to the mirror to stare at her reflection.

"Find me an Omega," she said. "One with untainted blood. Let her come to me tonight."

"As you wish." Henry bowed.

He turned toward the door.

"Henry." Miranda called out.

He stopped walking.

"I will speak to Kieran about your daughter but I need you to do what I ask of you, is that understood."

"Of course, Miranda"

She waved her hand to signify she was done with him.

Miranda pressed two fingers to the lines beneath her eyes. They seemed deeper now and she hated the weakness they represented.

She needed the girl and she would have her.

Soon.
