Chapter 121: Chapter 121: The Truth

She had to figure out what happened. Why wasn’t Chloe York the one who got drugged? Why did it end up being her and Brooke?

After watching the surveillance footage for half an hour, she finally understood.

She slowly closed her laptop. "Chloe York... oh, Chloe York. I never thought you’d become so clever."

"You just wait. I’ll make you pay for this, for my daughter and for me."

Alice Cole pressed down hard on the laptop, her eyes filled with determination.

Meanwhile, Miles York was at his company, in a meeting with his employees.

Brooke York and Alice Cole had actually given him an idea. If Chloe York refused to cooperate, he could just trick her into coming back.

Since Chloe York didn’t want a college acceptance party and he did, he would just copy them and trick her into coming back.

After all, she would only need to make a brief appearance.

Brooke York stepped onto the grounds of the exam site. Compared to yesterday, she felt much more energetic. But just as she entered the school, she ran into Chloe York.

It was as if all the anger she’d been bottling up since yesterday had suddenly found a release valve.

"Chloe York, how could you be so vicious? If I can’t get into college this time—even a regular one—you’ll have ruined my life, you know that?" Brooke York strode up to Chloe and accused her harshly.

At that moment, she had completely forgotten her own actions—that she was only reaping what she had sown.

"I ruined you?" Chloe York stopped in her tracks. The accusation was so ridiculous it was almost funny. She couldn’t tell if Brooke was the product of bad parenting or if she was just rotten to the core.

’She’s not mentioning a single thing she did, is she? Not a word about why this happened.’

’But on second thought, how could it be her own parents’ fault? It had to be Brooke’s own nature. You could tell just by looking at Alice Cole.’

"Brooke York... oh, Brooke York, how can you even say that with a straight face? Who was trying to ruin whom here?" Chloe retorted.

"You two were the ones who tried to drug me. You were the ones who tried to ruin me. Brooke York, how dare you stand there and say that?"

"You knew we tried to drug you? When did you find out? And when did you switch the drug?" Brooke York fired off three questions.

She was completely baffled. ’The plan was only known to me and Alice Cole. Even if Chloe suspected something and was on her guard, Mom and I were watching the entire time. I even put the drug in myself.’

’I was sure it was foolproof. So how did Mom and I end up the victims while Chloe is perfectly fine?’

"That’s right, I knew. As for when... from the moment you said you wanted to ’get along,’ I knew you were planning something nasty for me."

"So I kept a close eye on you. That night, I saw you put something in the powdered milk. So, I ordered more powdered milk and some laxatives online. Then I put the laxatives in the bread that you and Alice Cole are so fond of."

"No wonder... No wonder you didn’t touch the bread yesterday. You only ate eggs and shumai. It’s because you put the drug in the bread," Brooke said, the realization dawning on her.

"That’s right. Brooke York, you’re reaping what you sow. If you hadn’t tried anything, I wouldn’t have either, and you wouldn’t have missed your first exam. But you just couldn’t help yourself, could you?"

"Then... did you take the first exam yesterday morning?" There was an obvious tension in Brooke’s voice as she asked.

’If she knew about the drugging, does that mean she also knew I tore up her admission ticket? Did she prepare for that, too?’

"Of course I did. Why wouldn’t I have?"

"Impossible! That’s absolutely impossible! I tore up your admission ticket! How could you have taken the exam?" Brooke’s voice cracked on the last few words.

She couldn’t believe it. How could Chloe have taken the first exam? She should have missed it, just like her!

"Because I left my real admission ticket at my desk in the exam room ahead of time. The one you tore up was just a decoy."

The day Brooke had suggested they get along, Chloe had gone to her teacher and gotten her exam admission number ahead of time. Citing her good grades and a fear of forgetting it, she’d asked for a special exception, and her homeroom teacher had agreed.

After getting her admission ticket, she made a photocopy. When she went to scope out the exam site, she stashed the original under her assigned desk and took the copy with her to the York Family’s house.

Having said her piece, Chloe didn’t linger. She still had an exam to take, after all.

Brooke York couldn’t believe what she was hearing. She watched Chloe walk away, her hands clenching into tight fists. She couldn’t believe it. She couldn’t believe that Chloe had never trusted her, that she’d been on guard the entire time.

And to think she’d believed Chloe was still as foolish as before—gullible and easy to fool.

When she got to the exam room, Chloe cleared her mind of all distractions and focused on the test. The morning session ended.

Chloe stepped out of the exam hall and decided against going to the same restaurant as yesterday.

You can’t be too careful, after all. Who knew if Brooke had found out where she’d eaten yesterday and was lying in wait to set another trap?

When it came to someone like Brooke, it was better to be cautious.

For lunch today, she chose a chain restaurant with a self-serve buffet where you paid by weight.

"Chloe, you’re eating here today, too!" Chloe hadn’t expected to run into Evan Shaw. She suddenly realized that it seemed like almost every time they met, it was in a place where they were eating.

"Have you noticed we always seem to run into each other at mealtime?" Chloe said, setting her tray down across from Evan.

"I have!" Evan Shaw really had noticed. He was sure that the first time he’d bumped into Chloe in the cafeteria had been a genuine coincidence.

After that, he’d only intentionally tried his luck once; all the other encounters, including this one, had been by chance.

He knew where Chloe had eaten yesterday and had originally planned on going to that restaurant too. But he was worried it might be a distraction right after the morning exam and affect their performance in the afternoon, so he’d decided against it.

He never expected they’d run into each other again today.

"Looks like we’re destined to be eating buddies!" Chloe joked. After all, they really did run into each other every time they were getting food. How could they not be?

"It sure seems that way."

The two fell silent after that, both focusing on their meal. There would still be some time left after they finished, so they could squeeze in a little more studying.

After lunch, they found a quiet spot to read. An unspoken agreement passed between them: they wouldn’t check their answers. At this point, what was done was done. All they could do was wait for the results.

When the time came, they headed back into the exam hall. As long as Brooke didn’t seek her out, Chloe paid her no mind.
