“I’m telling you, I’m not a vampire.”
The one who appeared before Eliette was none other than Ceres’s disciple, Ersi.
[If you suck people’s blood, that makes you a vampire. What else would you be?]
“I don’t openly suck their blood like—....... Haa.”
Ersi let out a short sigh and shook his head. He knew perfectly well that if he started arguing with her over something like this, it truly would never end, so he backed down first.
He had not come here today to argue about something like this.
[So? Why did you call me out?]
A little while ago, it had been Ersi who had secretly signaled to her while she sat by the window, making sure the others did not notice.
Telling her that he was over here.
“You really don’t know?”
[Know what?]
“Herchaos.”
[.......]
Eliette, who had been staring straight at Ersi, slowly shifted her eyes to the side. As though avoiding his gaze.
“If you know something, spill it.”
[I already told Ceres. I don’t know anything either.]
At Eliette’s answer, a crooked smile appeared on Ersi’s lips.
“You expect me to believe that?”
[And if you don’t, what exactly are the likes of you going to do about it?]
“I heard you’ve been going around meeting gods you’re acquainted with lately.”
Flinch.
Eliette once again subtly avoided Ersi’s gaze. Seeing that, Ersi’s smile deepened.
“Spill it.”
[Sp-Spill what?!]
“What you’ve been digging around for, and what you heard as a result.”
[.......]
“Should I call Lady Ceres?”
At those words, Eliette flinched again, growled, then clicked her tongue.
Damn bastard.
This is exactly why I hate that bastard.
Fwoosh!
The cat vanished, and in its place stood a beautiful woman with brilliantly colored hair.
[As you know, I can’t carelessly tell humans about affairs of the Divine Realm.]
“Then that has nothing to do with me. As you’re always saying, Lady Eliette, I’m merely a half-existence. I’m not human.”
[.......]
“So, what did you find out?”
Eliette might now be an outcast from the Divine Realm, forced to exist as a Tamer Relic, but when she had been a god, she had held a higher position than almost anyone else.
‘Lady Ceres thinks she was a low-ranking god, though.’
As a high-ranking god, she had countless gods beneath her who followed her.
Even Ersi did not know exactly how someone like her had suddenly been cast out of the Divine Realm and ended up trapped inside a Tamer Relic.
‘There was a rumor that it happened because of a human.’
But that was literally nothing more than a rumor. Nothing certain.
‘Still.......’
Ersi knew very well that even now, many gods continued to follow her. And because of that, even these days, when she went to see them, many gods provided her with information.
He had heard that the low-ranking gods who had once worked beneath her and followed her had since risen to high-ranking positions and now wielded enormous influence over the Divine Realm.
‘And the higher their positions have risen, the more valuable the information they have must be.’
Not long ago, Eliette had disappeared for quite some time. And Ersi could roughly guess what she had been doing during that period.
After all, she had occasionally done the same thing in the past.
“Spill it.”
[Ugh.]
Eliette groaned with her brow deeply furrowed. She wanted to simply ignore him and leave, but she could not.
Because she knew his threat to call Ceres was not an empty one.
That bastard is actually pretty scary when he loses it.
‘Ceres needs to know this too!’
That bastard’s personality is several thousand times nastier than you think it is.
That’s why I don’t like that bastard!
[A long time ago.......]
Eliette let out a faint sigh and began a very long story.
[An extremely powerful Demon King was born.]
“...A Demon King?”
Ersi’s expression turned strange.
If Lady Ceres were hearing this right now, wouldn’t she be sighing in utter disbelief?
As if things hadn’t already gone far enough, now there was even a Demon King?
[To stop that Demon King, all the gods of the Divine Realm joined forces.]
“Not a Demon God, but merely a Demon King, and the gods had to join forces to stop him?”
Did that make any sense?
Why were gods called gods in the first place?
They possessed omnipotent power, yet all of them had to join forces because of a single Demon King?
[Because he was that much of an anomaly.]
And it was not only the Divine Realm.
In the Demon Realm as well, those who opposed the Demon King began joining forces.
“Why the Demon Realm?”
Had the demons rebelled against their own king?
[Because even the Demon God was annihilated by that Demon King.]
“......!”
“An existence that is too powerful is bound to provoke hostility.”
Of course, true to demons who worshiped strength above all else, there were certainly those who followed the Demon King.
But those who opposed him were far more numerous.
[And so, the Divine Realm and the factions that had rebelled against the Demon King began joining forces.]
That was when the long war began.
Countless beings were annihilated or fell into a deep slumber, and the damage suffered by both the Divine Realm and the Demon Realm grew increasingly catastrophic.
[In the end, the Chief God made a proposal.]
“To whom?”
[The Demon King.]
No.
Rather than a proposal, it was practically a declaration of surrender.
Because the Chief God knew that if things continued this way, everything in the Divine Realm would collapse.
“What kind of proposal?”
[He suggested that the Demon King stop the entire war and voluntarily seal himself away and go to sleep.]
“Cra.......”
...Was he crazy?
What kind of proposal was that?
Ersi stared at her in disbelief.
It was not as though the Demon King was an idiot. There was no way he would accept such an absurd proposal.
[In exchange.......]
Eliette let out another short sigh.
[He made a promise. When the Demon King was eventually released from the seal and awakened again, the Divine Realm would neither obstruct nor interfere with him in any way.]
“...And the Demon King accepted that?”
[Yeah.]
The Demon King, too, had been exhausted by the prolonged war and had suffered tremendous losses.
If things continued as they were, he himself would eventually face annihilation, so he had little choice but to readily agree to the Chief God’s proposal.
His body and mind would be sealed and his power scattered, but the promise that no one would interfere with him once he eventually awakened again was enticing enough.
[And so, the Demon King was sealed away and fell asleep.]
The power he possessed was scattered throughout the world.
[And that bought the Divine Realm enough time to restore everything that had been destroyed.]
“Hmm. But they agreed to a condition, didn’t they? That they wouldn’t interfere once the Demon King awakened again.”
Then once the Demon King awakened again, wouldn’t they truly be unable to do anything?
[.......]
Eliette shook her head, a mocking smile on her lips that seemed directed at someone unknown.
[I told Ceres this too, but gods are fucking selfish.]
Gods were creatures who cared about no one but themselves.
[Why do you think Grace suddenly got sick and died?]
“What?”
Why was her death suddenly being brought into this......?!
“Don’t tell me.......”
Ersi’s expression, which until now had been relatively indifferent, as though he were listening to someone else’s story, turned ice-cold.
“Are you saying that the gods were involved in Lady Grace’s death?”
[I couldn’t find out that much for certain. But.......]
Eliette also seemed far from pleased, judging by how persistently she furrowed her brow.
[It’s certain that the gods chose Grace... Ceres.]
“Chose her?”
[As a tool to use against the Demon King.]
“.......”
[The power that girl possesses—the ability to turn back time—you know as well as I do that it isn’t a power a human could possess.]
Because they had entered into a covenant with the Demon King, they could not intervene directly.
So instead, they had devised a way to stop the Demon King through someone else.
[They scattered a power capable of restraining the Demon King throughout the world. And that power took root in Grace.]
Once someone possessing the power they had scattered appeared, all they had to do was wait.
Wait and hope that when the Demon King awakened, she would be capable of restraining him.
[But there was one problem. When exactly would the Demon King awaken?]
If he awakened after she was already dead, then the whole thing would have been for nothing, wouldn’t it?
“...So you’re saying that was why Lady Grace died back then?”
So that she could exist when the Demon King was born?
“Wait.”
But there were still far too many things Ersi could not understand.
“Lady Ceres told me something. That man named Veilks whom she met before said he had been waiting for Master to die.”
He had said he had simply been waiting for Grace, who constantly interfered with what he was trying to do, to finally die.
But according to what Eliette was saying now, what Veilks had been trying to do was awaken the Demon King again.
Something about the timing did not add up.
“Then wouldn’t Lady Grace have needed to stay alive back then?”
