Rosalie:
I didn’t stop walking until the noise of the exhibition had completely faded behind us.
Only when we reached a nearly deserted hallway lined with glass windows and conference rooms did I finally let go of Kaiser’s wrist. My breathing was still uneven, but I forced myself to stay calm as I turned around to face him.
He didn’t give me a chance to speak.
"What were you doing with Zaiden Nightfang?"
The sharpness in his voice caught me completely off guard. The very first thing he wanted to know was why I had been with Zaiden, not whether I found anything during my investigation.
Something inside me immediately bristled.
"I could ask you the same thing," I shot back. "What exactly does my personal life have to do with you?"
His jaw clenched. "It has everything to do with me if you are associating with someone like him."
"And someone like him means what exactly?"
He opened his mouth before closing it again, visibly forcing himself to calm down. I watched him inhale slowly, then exhale through his nose. When he finally spoke again, his voice had lost most of its anger. "I’m not saying he’s a bad man."
I folded my arms. "Then what are you saying?"
"I’m saying he’s dangerous." The certainty in his tone made me pause. He wasn’t trying to insult Zaiden, nor he was throwing accusations around. If anything, he genuinely sounded worried.
"Rosalie," he continued quietly, "there are powerful businessmen and alphas... and then there are people like Zaiden Nightfang. Men who always seem ten steps ahead of everyone else. Men who can make problems disappear with a single phone call. Men whose influence reaches places most people don’t even know exist."
I remained silent.
"You don’t accidentally become someone like him."
The frustration I’d been feeling slowly began to fade. He wasn’t trying to poison my opinion of Zaiden just because he got jealous. He wasn’t calling him evil. He simply seemed convinced that Zaiden was someone capable of operating in a world far more dangerous than ordinary people could imagine.
If only he knew how right he actually was. I almost laughed at the irony.
"Kaiser."
"What?"
"I think... there’s something you should know."
His expression softened slightly as he asked, "What is it?"
I looked him straight in the eyes as I dropped the news. "Zaiden Nightfang is my fated mate."
Silence.
Complete silence.
He didn’t blink. Didn’t speak. For several long seconds, he simply stared at me as though he hadn’t understood a single word I’d just said.
"...What?"
"My fated mate."
The color slowly drained from his face. "No..." His voice barely came out above a whisper. "How..."
It wasn’t denial. It sounded...almost broken.
I watched the realization settle inside him piece by piece, and with every passing second, something in his expression shattered a little more. His shoulders seemed heavier than before. The confidence that usually surrounded him disappeared completely, leaving behind someone who suddenly looked exhausted beyond words.
For one painful moment, it honestly looked as though I’d physically hurt him. And the realization made my chest tighten. I might no longer love him, but that didn’t mean I wanted to hurt him. Not after realizing he hadn’t been as merciless and blind as his brothers.
"Kaiser..."
He looked away.
I knew that look, because I’d worn it myself once. It was the look of someone desperately trying to keep themselves together before anyone noticed they were falling apart.
"I almost got caught upstairs," I said quietly, changing the subject before either of us had to acknowledge what had just happened.
That finally reached him. His head snapped back toward me. "What?"
"I was inside the president’s office."
His eyes widened. "Rosalie..."
"I found investment records."
"You actually found them?"
"I photographed everything I could."
His expression immediately shifted from heartbreak to alarm. "What happened?"
"Two security men walked in. Then they were about to call their senior when Zaiden arrived."
I briefly explained how he’d stepped into the office pretending I’d been there with him the entire time, how effortlessly he’d redirected the conversation, and how the executives had abandoned their suspicions the moment they recognized him.
By the time I finished, Kaiser had completely regained his composure.
He rubbed a hand across his face. "I leave you alone for less than thirty minutes...and you nearly get arrested."
"I’m sorry."
"I specifically told you not to do anything reckless." He sighed so deeply I almost felt guilty. Almost.
Neither of us spoke for a while. The hallway became quiet again. Finally, Kaiser broke the silence.
"Then..." He hesitated. "...what’s your relationship with Eiden Thorn?"
I looked at him. There wasn’t much point hiding anything anymore.
"He’s my other mate."
He froze again.
"...Your..."
"My other fated mate."
His eyes searched my face as though hoping I’d suddenly admit it was all an elaborate joke.
I didn’t.
"...Two?"
I nodded. "Both of them."
He actually laughed once. Not because he found it funny, but because he simply didn’t know how else to react. For a moment it seemed like he wanted to say something, but then he just leaned back against the wall, still trying to process everything.
"So..." His voice sounded strangely distant. "...what exactly happened during the last five months?"
I looked down at the floor for a moment before beginning.
"After I was pushed from the cliff, I survived... barely. Eiden found me before anyone else did and took me to his house. At first, I didn’t even know who he was. I only knew he’d saved my life. I met Zaiden at his house. Then the mate bond appeared, and I realized I was destined for both of them." I smiled faintly. "They have protected me, trained me, helped me build a life and identity of my own, stood beside me while I fought my insecurities, and... somehow turned a complete strange town into my home."
Kaiser listened without interrupting. When I finally finished, he remained silent for several seconds.
"I suppose..." He smiled sadly. "...they have been taking good care of you."
"They have."
"I’m glad."
The words sounded sincere. Even if saying them clearly cost him something.
Before I could respond, footsteps echoed from the other end of the hallway. Both of us turned instinctively. A man in an expensive navy suit had just stepped out of a nearby conference room.
The moment his eyes landed on Kaiser, recognition flashed across his face and his polite smile widened.
"Mr. Blackthorn?"
My heart skipped a beat.
Charlotte’s brother was walking straight toward us.
