Rosalie:

I almost lost it from the pain. But somehow I found the strength to ignore both ethe pain and the blood.

Another punch, another kick, I answered every attack with everything I had left. Not perfectly nor gracefully, but enough to stay alive and enough to make them work for every inch.

By now my entire body hurt so badly I could barely tell which injuries came from the attackers and which belonged to whatever was happening inside me. My ribs felt ready to split apart. My heartbeat thundered uncontrollably. Every breath became more difficult than the last. Yet somehow... I was still standing.

Three grown men. One exhausted woman. And none of them had managed to kill me.

A fierce surge of pride filled my chest despite everything.

Eiden... Zaiden... I didn’t waste all those months.

Then... everything changed. The clouds overhead slowly drifted apart and silver moonlight poured into the narrow alley. All four of us looked upward instinctively.

The full moon.

The instant my eyes met its brilliant silver light, something inside me snapped. Not emotionally, but physically. A sickening crack echoed through my own body and pain unlike anything I’d ever imagined exploded through every bone at once. It felt as though my skeleton had begun breaking apart from the inside.

My knees buckled and a scream tore from my throat - raw, agonized, and completely beyond my control - as the world around me dissolved beneath unbearable pain.

The scream never stopped.

It ripped itself from my throat over and over again until my voice became completely unrecognizable. I collapsed onto the frozen ground, every muscle in my body seizing violently as unbearable agony tore through me. It wasn’t simply pain anymore. It felt as though invisible hands had reached inside me and were pulling every bone apart before forcing them back together into something entirely different.

My fingers curled unnaturally, my spine arched until I thought it would snap, and another sickening crack echoed through my body. I couldn’t breathe. Couldn’t think. Couldn’t even see properly through the tears blurring my vision. The world became nothing but pain and moonlight.

Somewhere in the distance I vaguely registered the three men taking several frightened steps backward, their earlier confidence completely gone as they stared at me writhing on the ground.

"What the hell is happening?" one of them shouted. "I... I thought they said she couldn’t shift!"

The second man’s voice carried unmistakable panic. "They did! They swore she couldn’t shift!"

"No..." the third muttered as he watched my body continue twisting beneath the full moon. "Look at her... that’s not normal. That’s a first shift."

Their voices faded into meaningless noise. Something deep inside me answered the moon. Something ancient. Something wild.

I felt it awaken.

The restless presence that had lingered inside me for weeks suddenly surged forward with overwhelming force. It wasn’t frightening. It wasn’t foreign. It felt... familiar. Like finding a missing part of myself I’d never realized had been gone.

Every shattered bone reformed. Every muscle stretched and strengthened. My senses exploded outward all at once. I could hear the terrified heartbeats of the three men. I could smell their sweat, their fear, the metal tang of blood from the cut on my arm, the damp earth beneath the snow, even distant pine trees swaying in the winter wind. My vision sharpened until every individual snowflake drifting through the night became perfectly clear.

Then... silence.

The pain vanished.

I slowly opened my eyes. The world looked completely different - larger, sharper, and alive. A low growl rumbled from my chest without me meaning to make it.

The three men stood frozen.

One of them whispered hoarsely, "An... Alpha?"

Moonlight reflected in their widened eyes. I lowered my gaze for the briefest moment, catching my reflection in a puddle left beside the wall. A massive dark brown wolf stared back at me, far larger than any ordinary wolf had any right to be.

Powerful shoulders. Thick brown fur. Eyes gleaming with molten silver. And centered on my forehead was brilliant silver crescent that seemed to glow beneath the full moon.

For one heartbeat I simply stared. Then instinct completely overwhelmed thought.

So I ran.

Not because I feared them. But because if I stayed... I would kill them.

My body coiled at the realization. With one powerful leap, I cleared the high brick wall that had trapped me only moments earlier, landing effortlessly on the opposite side. The strength flowing through every limb left me momentarily stunned, but my wolf didn’t hesitate. She sprinted through narrow streets toward the woods bordering Shadow Creek with a speed I had never imagined possible.

Behind me came furious snarls.

"She’s getting away!"

"Shift!"

Three separate howls split the night.

I glanced back once as three large wolves jumped over the wall in pursuit, racing after me with murderous determination. Whatever shock my transformation had caused them hadn’t changed their mission. They still intended to finish the job.

The forest swallowed us within moments. Snow crunched beneath powerful paws as towering pines flashed past in a blur. Every scent around me seemed impossibly vivid. Rabbits hidden beneath brush. Deer farther north. Frozen streams winding through the forest. Yet cutting through everything else remained the unmistakable scent of the three wolves chasing me.

Closer.

Closer.

Too close.

One launched from my left. But my wolf twisted mid-stride. His jaws snapped shut on empty air before I slammed into him with enough force to send both of us tumbling through the snow. He recovered quickly, but so did I. Without needing anyone to teach her, my wolf moved with natural precision, every motion smooth and explosive.

Another attacker crashed into my side and pain flared along my ribs.

I spun, driving him backward with my shoulder before snapping my jaws toward his neck. He barely escaped, stumbling away with a frightened yelp.

The third wolf circled behind me.

They were hunting together, working as a pack and trying to wear me down.

My wolf answered with another deep growl. She refused to retreat. She planted her paws firmly into the snow and faced all three of them head-on.

Come.

The challenge echoed in every tense muscle of her body.

The wolves attacked together. Teeth flashed, bodies collided, and snow exploded beneath us.
