Chapter 1237: Chapter 1237: Aurelia Shaw “Killed Someone”

Arriving at the address Hadrian Turner had sent her, Aurelia Shaw hesitated for a moment and knocked on the door.

The door wasn’t closed; it swung open at a touch.

Aurelia’s brows furrowed, an instinctive sense of wrongness rising in her. She walked a few steps inside and immediately caught the heavy stench of blood thick in the air, so strong it made her stomach heave with nausea, wafting out from the room ahead.

Aurelia abruptly halted mid-step, certain suspicions surfacing in her mind.

She turned to leave without staying even a second longer, but she was still too late.

She ran right into Emily Stewart, who was just coming back, at the doorway.

Their gazes met. Emily’s first reaction was confusion—why was Aurelia in her home? Then she smelled the sharp, metallic reek of blood. Every time she came home, she was greeted by the fragrance of flowers, because she liked to keep fresh blooms in the house. But today there was no familiar floral scent; instead, the air was saturated with a dense, cloying, nauseating tang of blood that refused to dissipate.

Realizing something, Emily’s face changed. She shoved Aurelia aside and strode quickly toward the bedroom.

Aurelia staggered a few steps from the push. With her skills, Emily normally wouldn’t be able to lay a hand on her, but everything had happened so suddenly that even she had no time to react, and she had never guarded herself against Emily. Lifting her gaze toward the unnaturally quiet bedroom, Aurelia felt a bad premonition tighten in her chest.

It felt like she had just walked straight into a trap someone had carefully prepared for her in advance.

That thought had barely formed when a wretched, grief-stricken cry burst from the bedroom. "No—don’t, Nolan Lawson, get up and look at me, look at me, okay? This has to be a dream, right? None of this is real, I’m just dreaming, you’re playing a joke on me, aren’t you?"

"I’m sorry, I was wrong, I’ll go with you, wherever you go I’ll follow you, open your eyes and look at me..." Emily sobbed as she frantically dialed 120. Her blood-slicked hands smeared the screen red, the touchscreen refusing to respond. Huge tears spilled from her eyes; she was on the verge of breaking down. The chill under her palms told her that the man in her arms was already dead, but she refused to believe it, clinging instead to the hope that this was all just a dream, that it wasn’t real.

Sensing that something was very wrong, Aurelia hurriedly sent a text message to Hadrian and strode into the bedroom.

She caught hold of the hysterical Emily, who was trying to dial emergency services, her expression unnervingly calm.

"Calm down."

As soon as she spoke, she smoothly dialed 120.

Emily shot her a glance.

Aurelia pulled Emily up and set her on the sofa, then briskly yanked the bedsheet off and draped it over the man’s body on the floor, a body that had already been cold for quite some time. The man’s eyes were wide open, a ferocious, unwilling glare frozen in their depths.

Emily grabbed Aurelia’s wrist. "Did you call an ambulance?"

Aurelia fell silent for a moment, then parted her red lips slightly. "He’s already gone. You need to face reality."

"No! He’s not! The doctor hasn’t even checked him—what gives you the right to say he’s already dead!" Aurelia’s excessive calmness pushed Emily over the edge. Someone had just died right in front of them; how could this woman remain so composed?

For a split second, Emily felt that Aurelia was a monster.

Aurelia only looked at Emily with cool detachment. She knew that look in Emily’s eyes all too well—"You’re lying!" "He’s not dead! He’s not dead yet!" "Why aren’t you saving him? He’s not dead yet!"... She herself had once said those same words, but the outcome wasn’t something that could be changed simply because she couldn’t accept it.

She had seen too much, and so she’d become calm, numb, even, in the eyes of others, cold-blooded.

The police arrived at the scene shortly afterward and began to process it. Aurelia knew there was no way she’d be able to wash her hands of this; she had already braced herself for it. But before she could explain the truth to the officers, Emily’s hysterical scream cut through the air first:

"She’s the killer!"
