Upon arriving at the President’s residence, Mason Nightshade went straight to Adrian Cooper’s study, while Aurelia was escorted to her quarters by a servant.
"It’s the same room as last time. The First Lady said you’re accustomed to it, so we didn’t change it. Everything is as you used it last time, but we’ve replaced items like linens with new ones," the servant led Aurelia into the room.
Aurelia nodded in thanks to the servant.
"Are you staying here too?" Aurelia asked Junia Simpson, who followed her in.
Junia shook her head, "With my status, I’m not qualified to stay at the President’s residence. Miss Aurelia, regarding Mason’s health, there are some things I need to remind you about."
Aurelia was silent for a moment, inviting Junia to sit down. She originally planned to get some useful information out of Junia’s mouth but found that Junia was even tighter-lipped than Mason.
Not only did she fail to extract a single bit of useful information, but she almost got caught up in her words instead. Aurelia sighed helplessly.
Mason is not only shrewd, but even the people around him are so shrewd. They’re really hard to deal with.
She watched Junia finish her long list of reminders, sipping the water Aurelia had just poured for her, with no sign of leaving.
Aurelia tilted her head and asked, "Are you waiting for someone?"
Junia was startled, then quickly shook her head, "No."
"Oh." Aurelia responded, cradling her chin, lost in thought.
After a while, feeling she had no reason to linger, Junia stood up, "I’ll be going now. You should rest well."
"Alright." Aurelia watched Junia leave, gazing at her departing figure, deep in thought.
...
In the study at the President’s residence.
The atmosphere was tense.
"Prime Minister Zuo has been acting more and more brazenly lately. His son, Henry Fletcher, has great prestige in the military and has eradicated the entrenched drug lords in Southeast Asia. The military is leaning towards their camp. Once they control military power, we’ll no longer be able to restrain them," Adrian Cooper said, crossing his arms in front of his mouth. Despite discussing matters concerning his position and even his life, his expression never changed.
"Mason, this is why I had to call you back," Adrian said to Mason Nightshade, "Right now, you’re the only person I can trust. More and more people are defecting to Prime Minister Zuo’s side. I don’t know who to trust anymore."
"I understand," Mason said with a grave expression.
If it weren’t an emergency, Adrian Cooper wouldn’t have called him back.
...
It wasn’t until late at night that Mason Nightshade returned.
He took off his coat, pulled off his tie, and handed it to the servant, asking, "Where’s Aurelia?"
"Miss Aurelia is in her bedroom and has gone to sleep," the servant replied respectfully. The servants at the President’s residence were different from those at the old house and Nightshade Residence; they had heard of Mason’s reputation and dared not be negligent.
Mason went upstairs, quietly pushed open the bedroom door, and tiptoed inside. Despite being over six feet tall, he moved carefully, afraid to wake the person in bed. He leaned down to kiss her forehead before turning to the bathroom.
After washing off the day’s scent, Mason lifted the covers, embraced Aurelia from behind, and kissed her ear, "Good night."
Aurelia stirred, half-asleep as she turned over and hugged Mason, nestled into his arms naturally and intimately, "Talking until so late."
"Prime Minister Zuo has always been dissatisfied with Adrian and has been making significant moves lately. We discussed it a bit longer," Mason said, not hiding the truth.
