Chapter Two Hundred and Eighteen
For the first time in a long time, something unfamiliar pressed against Asli’s chest.
Pity.
She looked at him, really looked at him.
Daniel stood there with blood still dried near his lip, bruises beginning to darken along his face, shoulders held up by nothing except
stubbornness.
He was nothing but a man who had spent years believing he was protecting his brother, only to find out he had been dancing on strings someone else held.
Before she even realized it, the words were already leaving her mouth.
"I’ll give you two options."
Daniel looked up.
"You can go after my father and get yourself killed..." Her head tilted slightly. "Or you come with me."
Silence.
Daniel stared at her for a moment.
Then slowly shook his head.
"No."
The answer came quietly.
"I’m done working for people." She was expecting this.
His gaze lowered briefly.
"I just want my brother safe."
Asli studied him.
"You know..." she said slowly, "I could put a target on your head right now before you even think of trying anything."
Her voice stayed calm.
It sounded neutral, held no anger... not even a threat.
Which somehow made it worse.
But deep down, another thought was sitting somewhere she didn’t want to touch.
’Who am I trying to protect?’
Daniel?
Or her father?
Her jaw tightened slightly.
Because regardless of everything, the man had raised her.
Sheltered her.
Fed her.
Given her a home.
Given her a name.
Taught her how to survive.
How to fight.
How to kill.
He had made her his own.
Then suddenly...
Her stomach twisted uncomfortably.
A thought crashed into her so violently that she almost physically recoiled from it.
What if...
’What if I’m just like them?’ First the idea of being more than her adoptive father excited her.
Her breath caught.
What if...
No.
No.
Her eyes narrowed immediately.
That wasn’t possible.
Her biological father had been his best friend.
He took her in as a daughter.
As family.
Right?
She swallowed.
Then Ahmet’s voice slipped into her head.
’My father is innocent. I’ll bring you proof.
Her chest tightened slightly.
If his father truly wasn’t involved...
Then why would hers lie?
She cleared her throat quickly, almost forcing the thoughts away.
Daniel misunderstood her silence.
"I wouldn’t blame you," he said quietly.
She looked at him.
"If you put a target on me."
His expression barely changed.
Disappointment sat there instead.
Tired and worn.
"My point is," she said, pushing herself away from those thoughts, "you can’t kill him."
She folded her arms again.
"It won’t be easy."
Daniel gave a short laugh.
Not because anything was funny.
"It’s worth trying."
His eyes hardened.
"I don’t mind joining forces."
He shrugged slightly.
"Almost every leader out there hates him."
"Yeah."
Asli’s lips twitched.
"And they hate me too."
Her voice stayed flat.
"But somehow I’m still breathing."
Daniel watched her. Maybe, it was the fact that she thought she had Ahmet and Markus to protect her aside from Cole.
"Your father already put bounties on Ahmet and Markus."
She stilled. She already knew that.
"Demir placed one on Cole too, without knowing he’s my brother."
Her eyes snapped toward him.
"What?" That, she didn’t know.
Daniel blinked once.
"And I have no idea who’s hunting you."
Silence.
Then...
Her heart kicked violently against her ribs.
Ahmet.
Markus.
Cole.
Her people.
Her feet had already started moving before she realized it.
Back and forth.
Again.
Again.
Her arms unfolded.
Folded again.
Unfolded.
"How dare that idiot..." she muttered.
Demir.
Of course, it would be Demir.
She clenched her fists.
That bastard.
Daniel watched her quietly.
"You know nobody leaves this organization alive," he said after a while.
Her pacing slowed.
"You either die in it..." He looked down briefly. "Or run."
A small breath left him.
"And running means dying too."
Silence settled again.
"I’ve done things I didn’t think I’d regret."
His voice had gone quieter.
"But I’d regret it more if I died without trying to kill the man who destroyed my family."
His eyes lifted to hers.
"You can put a bounty on me."
A small shrug.
"I don’t care."
He tried smiling.
"As long as Cole is safe, I’d die a happy man."
Asli stared at him.
Then sighed.
It was long and slow.
"Loyalty isn’t the same as guilt."
Daniel frowned.
"You’ve been with Demir since you were a teenager."
She looked directly at him now.
"I’ve seen you. You follow him everywhere."
Her head tilted.
"You stand where he stands."
"You fight where he fights."
A small pause.
"People kill for loyalty like that."
Daniel’s eyes shifted slightly.
"You’re worth more than you think."
Silence came and from his face, she knew he was remembering something.
"And Cole?"
She smiled faintly.
"He needs you more than you realize."
Daniel stared at her.
For a second his expression softened.
Just slightly.
"It’s not my place to say," she continued quietly, "but your brother worries about you every day."
Daniel smiled.
It was small but real.
"You care about him." He asked.
"I do."
No hesitation.
No denial.
Daniel shook his head slowly.
"You know..." he said, watching her carefully, "from far away you look terrifying."
Her brow lifted. Now, she didn’t know whether she wanted to be known as terrifying.
"But then you get close."
His smile widened slightly.
"And you realize there’s actually a heart in there."
Asli stared at him.
Then scoffed.
"Says the man who walked into my territory as if he owned it."
A small laugh escaped him.
"In my defense, I didn’t expect to see you."
His shoulders lifted slightly.
"I saw Cole come in while I was jogging."
"I went back to freshen up."
A shrug.
"I probably missed you entering the place."
"It’s fine."
Silence followed.
Then she noticed it.
The hesitation.
The shifting eyes.
The opening and closing of his mouth.
She sighed.
"Speak."
He rubbed the back of his neck.
"Your... baby."
Everything inside her immediately sharpened.
Her eyes narrowed.
"How do you know?"
Daniel sighed.
"Demir told me."
The tension eased slightly.
Of course.
Last night.
She looked away briefly.
"You need to leave."
Her eyes returned to him.
"If your father finds out..." he swallowed, "you’re dead."
Silence.
"And Demir won’t stay quiet either."
Asli stared at him.
She expected irritation.
Expected anger.
But it never came.
Instead...
Something warm settled quietly in her chest.
Because beneath all the confusion...
All the revenge...
All the blood and fights, Daniel was worrying about her
child.
A small smile tugged at her lips before she could stop it.
It was short, soft, and real.
Before she could say anything else, her phone began to ring.
