Chapter Two Hundred and Twenty-Six
Asli lowered the reports onto the table one page at a time. Then she looked up.
"Call Ahmet’s father."
The words were calm.
Too calm.
She watched as the doctor’s smile disappeared. "What?"
"You heard me." Asli insisted and her shoulders stiffened.
For the first time since she’d walked into the room, the woman faltered. Her fingers curled unconsciously against the empty envelope she still held.
"I..." Her throat bobbed. "I don’t think..."
"Call him."
The doctor’s breathing hitched. Asli watched every tiny movement. The woman’s confidence had evaporated.
Interesting.
So...
’You fear his father.’ The thought settled in her mind almost lazily. ’Not me nor Ahmet.’
Her lips pressed into a thin line. People usually lost their composure the moment she entered a room. Yet this woman had spoken to her as though they were acquaintances.
Now all it had taken was the mention of one man and her hands had begun to shake.
"I..."
"Call him." Asli was beyond irritated and as to why she hadn’t punished the proud woman in front of her was news to herself.
The doctor reached for her phone. Her fingers trembled so badly she nearly dropped it.
Asli folded her arms. "I only have two possibilities in my head right now."
The doctor looked up.
"Either you made a mistake or you..." She let the sentence hang.
"I didn’t." The answer came quickly. Almost desperately. "Boss doesn’t like being called unless it’s an emergency."
"Boss?" Asli’s brow lifted.
"You call Ahmet by his name." The words slipped out before she thought about them. "Isn’t he also your boss?"
The doctor blinked. Then, despite her nervousness, a small smile appeared. "Ahmet and I grew up together." There was unmistakable pride in her voice.
Asli’s expression didn’t change.
"Call him."
The smile vanished. A weary sigh escaped the doctor as she finally pressed the number.
The call connected after only two rings.
"What is it?" Even through the speaker, the older man’s voice carried enough authority to silence the room.
The doctor flinched. Without saying a word, she hurriedly thrust the phone into Asli’s hand.
Asli lifted it to her ear. "I don’t think you gave me every sample."
"Listen here, young lady." His voice hardened. "You do not speak to me in that tone."
"My samples." The words escaped through clenched teeth. Then, unexpectedly... "Please."
The room went still. Cole looked at her and the doctor stared.
Even the man on the other end of the call fell silent for a heartbeat. When he spoke again, some of the steel had left his voice. "I gave you every sample available." His answer came slower this time. "Except those belonging to men who died without leaving children or family members behind."
Asli swallowed.
Her grip tightened around the phone.
"How about you?"
A quiet laugh drifted through the speaker.
He sounded amused and uneasy. Sure this was a barbaric thought to welcome. However, it was so unlike the man she’d met yesterday that it made her grip tighten around the phone.
"You have no idea what thoughts you’re inviting into your head, do you?" He said with disgust. The thought disgusted her too yet, Asli said nothing.
His voice lowered. "You’re carrying Ahmet’s child." She knew that. Her eyes remained fixed on the floor.
But then, what if the doctor wanted to tell her that Ahmet was her family? Either a distant cousin or something. Anything...
The doctor’s last words echoed again.
’Ahmet is your...’ She refused to stop now. Not until she knew what exactly her Villa’s doctor had been trying to tell her before the bullet silenced him forever. Knowing how he was killed instantly, she knew it was her father’s doing. If he didn’t want her to know, it meant something huge. She needed to know especially now that she knew they were alive.
She couldn’t ask Marco. She never would. Which left only one path. To go through every Mafia Villa on this earth.
The old man sighed. "Fine. Tell her to release my result to you." The line went dead instantly.
Asli lowered the phone slowly, then she turned, stretching her hand to indicate for her to release the result to her. The doctor had gone pale. Without a word, she reached into the pocket of her coat and pulled out another envelope. It was smaller than the others.
"You had one result..." Asli’s voice came out frighteningly calm. "...and you still stood there telling me I’d received everything?"
"I..." The doctor’s lips quivered. "I was only following an order."
The fear was unmistakable now. Her confidence was gone.
Gone was the pride. Her hands shook as she extended the envelope.
"I’m... I’m sorry."
Asli stared at it. She didn’t move. Didn’t reach for it.
A strange certainty settled over her. She already knew what it would say. It had to be negative. It had to be. She looked away.
"Keep it," Asli ordered.
The doctor blinked.
"It’s negative regardless."
She turned toward the door.
After only two steps, she stopped without looking back.
"There is no world where I want you treating me." The room seemed to grow colder. "Come anywhere near me again..." Her voice was quiet enough to make the threat worse. "...and you’ll find your tongue floating in your soup."
Then she walked out, leaving the unopened envelope behind.
Cole watched Asli until she disappeared around the corner. The hallway swallowed her footsteps. He remained where he was.
The news of Asli’s parents’ existence had lodged itself in his mind just as deeply as they had in hers.
He exhaled quietly. He knew she hadn’t slept. Not really. The dark circles beneath her eyes had deepened overnight.
He couldn’t tell her not to think about it. She already was. Like hell, he also wanted to find out who her father was and how she would take it when she finally found him.
He couldn’t promise they’d find the truth as soon as possible. He wasn’t even sure they would. And he certainly couldn’t give her the one thing she wanted most even if he were to turn the world upside down searching.
"She didn’t mean that..." The woman’s voice pulled him back. "...did she?"
He blinked and realized the doctor was standing beside him. Closer than she had any reason to be. Her fingers rested lightly against his forearm.
His eyes dropped to them.
"Touch me again..." His voice was flat enough to make her freeze. "...and I’ll add your fingers to the collection."
She jerked her hand away as though burned.
"I thought my Villa was barbaric," she muttered, taking a cautious step back. "You people are worse."
Cole didn’t bother answering. His attention had already drifted elsewhere.
Out of the corner of his eye, he caught the doctor reaching for the envelope Asli had refused to take. She opened it.
He didn’t care. The sample belonged to her boss. Not his boss. He turned toward the door.
Suddenly, a sharp gasp split the room.
"Oh my Lord!" The papers trembled violently in the doctor’s hands. "What the hell?!"
The sheer disbelief in her voice stopped him mid-step.
Cole turned.
The woman stood rooted to the spot, staring at the report as though it had suddenly rewritten itself before her eyes.
