Chapter Two Hundred and Thirty- Three
"Ahmet..." His father took a slow step toward him. His voice was unusually gentle. "Listen to me."
Ahmet took a step back. "No."
"Son..." his mother called.
Ahmet couldn’t wait anymore, his chest rose and fell violently.
"Don’t call me that until you answer me."
His mother flinched. Settimo’s hand remained suspended in the air before slowly falling to his side.
"I need you to calm down."
Ahmet laughed.
It sounded hollow. "Calm down?" He looked between his parents. "You want me to calm down?" His voice rose with every word. "I just found out the woman I love... the woman carrying my child..."
His throat tightened. "...might be my sister."
The last word almost refused to leave his mouth. He didn’t believe it. He didn’t want to believe it. His breathing became ragged.
"I need you to tell me this report is wrong."
His father’s silence only made something inside him snap. He crushed the report in his fist.
"Say something!" The roar shook the hall.
The servants froze where they stood and the guards looked everywhere except at him. No one dared interrupt.
Settimo waved his hand and everyone vanished leaving only the family to deal with their problems. He knew word would spread soon. He stepped forward again.
"I understand..."
"You don’t!" Ahmet cut him off. "You have no idea what I’m thinking right now." His hands shook uncontrollably. "I keep seeing her."
His eyes became distant. His jaw clenched.
"I forced her into my life." The confession came out broken. "I wouldn’t leave her alone. I chased her. I knew what I was doing when I showed her what passion was. She was innocent and I should have left her that way. I..." His voice failed him.
A sick feeling rolled through his stomach. His head dropped. "If I knew what we were..."
He couldn’t continue. He couldn’t even allow himself to finish the thought.
His mother quietly covered her mouth as tears streamed freely down her face.
He could tell his father wanted to tell him something. He wanted to explain.
But why was he holding back?
"Ahmet..." He called out.
"This isn’t happening." Ahmet shook his head repeatedly.
"It can’t be. It can’t..."
Before another word could be spoken, the front doors burst open. Heavy footsteps echoed through the entrance hall.
Then she appeared.
Asli.
Her hair had come loose from its tie. Her breathing was uneven.
Her eyes burned.
Behind her, Cole followed silently, his expression as grim as ever.
The moment Asli crossed the doorway, the entire hall seemed to freeze.
Her gaze swept across the room. It landed on Settimo.
Then his wife.
Then on Ahmet for one endless second.
Neither of them moved. Neither spoke.
The pain in her eyes hit him harder than any bullet ever had.
She looked at him as though she no longer knew who he was.
Or perhaps, who she was.
Her fingers curled into fists at her sides.
The fury she’d been holding back finally surfaced.
"Which one of you ordered my car to be stopped?"
Her voice wasn’t loud. It didn’t need to be.
The quiet fury in it was far more terrifying.
"Who had me dragged here?"
"Asli..." Markus stepped forward cautiously, one hand raised in an attempt to calm her.
"Stay out of this! I now understand why I never had it in me to kill you. You are my cousin." The last word scraped against her throat.
She looked away before anyone could see the tears gathering in her eyes, blinking them back with all the strength she had left.
But Ahmet saw it. By now, he knew her inside and out. He shook his head. He shouldn’t have.
"Asli?" He heard his mother call out. His chest tightened.
A few days ago, she’d begged him to keep ’that woman’ away from their family. She’d refused to accept the child growing inside her. Now, that same woman was looking at Asli with trembling eyes. His mind couldn’t hold the contradiction. He almost laughed but the sound never came. His throat hurt too much. Everything hurt too much. His gaze drifted back to Asli. Her face. Her trembling shoulders. Those broke him even more. He couldn’t look at her any longer than he could have.
He was going mad the longer his parents kept quiet. His thoughts crashed again into him so violently that his breath caught when he was reminded of their baby.
His lips parted. "Is the baby gone?" Ahmet couldn’t look at her when he asked. He was broken yet at the same time worried about her and the baby.
Asli’s fingers curled so tightly into her palms that her nails bit into her skin. She didn’t spare Ahmet a glance.
She heard him. He knew she did.
She simply refused to acknowledge him. He knew her too well. She was holding herself together by the thinnest thread. If she looked at him now, if she answered him now, everything inside her would break loose. She needed answers just as much as he did.
"My daughter..." their mother called, her voice splintering beneath the weight of the words.
"Don’t!" Asli’s voice cracked through the hall.
The older woman stopped as though she’d been struck. Ahmet never looked at either of them. His eyes remained fixed on Settimo.
"You are both our children." Settimo’s voice faltered. "I... I never knew..."
Ahmet shut his eyes, letting the darkness swallow him. For the first time in his life, he wished he had never been born. One part of him rejected every word he’d heard. Another knew he would never be able to unhear it.
"How?" Markus finally broke the silence. "When?" The questions echoed through the room.
A fire...
The word stirred something buried deep inside Ahmet. Nothing stayed long enough for him to hold onto it.
Years ago, Markus had told him about the fire that had nearly wiped out the Villa. They had both been children then. Markus remembered pieces of it. Ahmet... almost nothing.
They had always blamed the gaps on trauma. Now those missing pieces felt less like forgotten memories...
...and more like stolen ones.
His mother had cried for years. He remembered that. They thought he never knew but he always heard her cry alone in the bedroom while his father did the same in his study, both of them hiding it from the other. There had always been sadness in her eyes.
He had simply never known who she was mourning.
How could he know it was his sister?
His little sister.
His breathing became uneven as another memory forced its way into his mind.
Inside Marco’s warehouse, there were a lot of photographs of Asli.
Different ages.
Different places.
It made sense why all the other ladies had just one or two pictures but she had several of hers pinned. They had spent years of watching and years of planning.
Why?
What had his father done to make Marco steal his daughter? This was least of his worries now. The thought barely settled before another voice cut through the chaos.
"You are not leaving this house!"
Settimo.
The command rang through the hall and Ahmet’s eyes opened. They found Asli immediately. He knew exactly why his father had said it.
They all did.
If she walked out no there was only one place she intended to go. His chest tightened so painfully he struggled to draw breath.
Wasn’t that what had to happen?
Wasn’t that the only choice left?
Then why...
Why couldn’t he accept it?
He didn’t want to lose the baby.
He didn’t want to lose her.
But every instinct he had was now at war with the truth standing before him.
His heart felt as though someone had reached inside his chest and was crushing it with their bare hands.
He had endured bullets.
Broken bones.
Betrayal.
None of it had prepared him for this.
