Chapter Two Hundred and Thirty-Seven

"So let me get this straight."

Markus stared at Settimo, his face tightening as everything he had heard finally began to connect.

"Ahmet isn’t your biological son?"

Settimo said nothing.

"Then why the hell did you let him believe he slept with his own sister and got her pregnant?" Markus demanded, disbelief and anger fighting across his face. "What the hell is wrong with both of you?"

Asli stood quietly, also in her own world.

For the first time since everything had been revealed, the mess between her and Ahmet had momentarily disappeared beneath everything else. There were too many truths crashing into each other. Too many pieces of a life she thought she understood being ripped apart and rearranged before her eyes.

"You won’t understand, Markus."

"I’m not asking you to make me understand!"

Markus dragged a hand through his hair.

"And why would you keep the news about his family from him? If you’d told him the truth, he would’ve searched. He would’ve found them."

His voice suddenly faltered.

"Oh, my God."

His eyes widened.

"His mother."

Asli’s stomach dropped.

Markus looked at Georgia.

"She recognized him."

The memory came rushing back.

Georgia’s face the first time she had seen Ahmet.

The panic.

The way her entire body had trembled despite being unable to move.

The way she had reacted as though someone had brought a ghost into the room.

And how quickly Asli had gotten Ahmet away from her.

Asli’s lips parted.

’How did I not see it?’

She had been so consumed by herself and her baby that she hadn’t stopped to wonder why the woman had looked at Ahmet that way.

"She had an episode the first day she saw him," Markus continued, his voice quieter now. "She recognized him. She knew her own son."

Asli swallowed.

Ahmet could have known.

He could have searched.

He could have found his mother years ago.

Instead, they had allowed him to believe he was their son.

"You kept it from him," Markus said, looking back at Settimo. "He could’ve found them years ago."

"We were protecting him."

Settimo’s answer came without hesitation.

"And you."

Markus scoffed.

"Protecting us?"

"I know how reckless and careless the two of you can be."

Settimo’s gaze hardened.

"I would rather live with knowing the enemy is alive than attend either of your funerals."

Asli’s chest tightened.

She looked away.

For one humiliating second, something painfully close to jealousy stirred inside her.

’He loves them.’

She shouldn’t have cared.

Not now.

Not after everything.

But she did.

Marco had raised her knowing exactly what kind of world she was being thrown into. He had sent her toward danger knowing hungry wolves were waiting for her.

Settimo had taken Ahmet in too.

Yet he had spent years keeping his adoptive son’s past hidden because he wanted him alive.

He protected him.

The thought hurt.

Markus wasn’t finished.

"Reckless?"

He laughed bitterly.

"Marco should’ve been dead by now. We spent years trying to weaken him, strip him of his power, believing he was simply another shady, evil bastard playing his games against the Mafias."

His eyes moved toward Asli.

"We didn’t know the damn battle was personal."

Settimo’s jaw tightened.

"Imagine if Ahmet and Asli hadn’t gotten involved, we would’ve fought with her and probably killed her, or she would’ve killed us. There was no way we’d raid her Villa, kill her adoptive father, and have her applaud us. Either that or something else. I know you just found out but he’ll, he had your daughter."

Markus’ voice cracked.

"He took her. Raised her. Trained her to kill you."

Asli felt something cold settle beneath her ribs.

"He made her believe you killed her parents and you know what, he was going to make sure you didn’t survive."

Markus looked fully at Settimo as he continued.

"And after finding out she was alive, you locked her in a room."

His anger rose again.

"Then you get angry whenever she talks back to you?"

"I don’t get angry." Settimo’s response was so calm that Markus almost laughed. "You don’t know how dangerous that man is."

"Oh, we know something." Markus stepped closer. "We know he was planning to kill Asli after she killed you."

Asli froze.

Her eyes slowly lifted.

’After she killed him?’

The words sank into her.

Marco had never intended for her to survive that final mission.

She had thought she understood him.

She hadn’t.

Not even close.

Her fingers curled into her palms.

’Why?’

Why would the man who had raised her want her dead?

"What did you do to him?" Markus’ question came quietly. "Why does he hate you that much?"

Settimo’s expression changed.

For a moment, the older man seemed to be looking at something far beyond the walls around them.

He exhaled slowly.

"We went overseas for a meeting with the Mafias from the North."

His eyes lowered.

"When we returned, we found Georgia. She worked at the airport. She was very beautiful and had a wonderful smile"

Markus glanced toward Ahmet’s mother.

"Marco wanted her."

Asli watched Settimo carefully.

"Marco and Luis both fell for her," he continued. "But we knew Marco’s intentions weren’t pure. I did everything I could to keep him away from her."

"You interfered."

"I protected her."

Settimo’s voice hardened.

"Georgia knew her life was in danger when she chose Luis."

Markus stared at him.

"Wait."

His brows rose.

"All of this..."

He looked between Settimo and Georgia.

"...was because of a woman?"

No one answered.

Markus let out a disbelieving breath.

"And that sick bastard blamed you for losing her?"

His expression twisted.

"No wonder he took you two in."

His gaze shifted to Ruth who looked as horrified.

Then something else seemed to hit him.

"Wait."

His face changed.

"Matilda."

The name fell heavily into the silence.

"His obsession with Georgia..."

Markus looked toward the wheelchair.

"Matilda is her daughter too."

Ruth’s eyes widened. "Oh my God."
