On the same day as the court session.

D’Arc Estate, the Capital.

The moon’s brilliance competed against the orange gas lamps tracing the winding garden path.

Rainwater shimmered on cobblestones, while trimmed hedges and sleeping rose bushes framed the route toward a small wrought-iron gazebo.

Beyond it, the dark silhouette of D’Arc Manor stood against the mist with its tall windows glowing with warm candlelight.

Vincent was out on an evening stroll with a tall, blonde beauty in maid outfit by his side.

Leona went to her estate after dinner. She hadn’t talked to her parents after the masquerade ball.

They had to be briefed on many things with the most important being the economic slowdown.

They would unnecessarily panic and get anxious knowing ores weren’t arriving when in reality, their house was the number one on D’Arc’s priority. They won’t lack anything, but they have to be informed about it first.

Leona was also itching to refine something. The comfort of her home’s furnace couldn’t be matched, and she wanted to test her newfound cultivation prowess.

’I think it’s the equivalent of coming from a long vacation and getting to comfortably poop in the home toilet.’

Vincent thought while eying a wooden bench near a tall maple tree.

"Let’s have a seat."

Vincent went ahead and sat down.

Anastasia followed and sat beside him.

Vincent stared at the silhouette of his mansion and lightly swung his legs.

There wasn’t anyone nearby and apparently, he was alone with his maid.

Despite the opportunity, he stayed silent.

The two didn’t talk for a good few minutes.

At last, Anastasia cleared her throat.

"Young master, you wanted to talk about something?"

It was Vincent’s idea to go on a walk because he wished to talk to her.

It wasn’t every day he got some free time to himself or the needed privacy.

"I do."

Vincent continued to stare at the manor.

"I just don’t know how to say it."

Anastasia could sense the hesitation beneath his calm tone.

She placed her hand on top of his.

"I am now your personal attendant, young master. Someone very close to you. If you are unable to confide in me, it means I’m doing a bad job."

Despite being a regressor, despite being at the top of the chain in her previous iteration, and despite going through an apocalypse...

Anastasia found such words leaving her mouth effortlessly, as if it was the only right thing.

She did not find anything wrong in being an attendant, and especially Vincent’s.

He was a good person.

Vincent sighed.

He slowly turned to her and leaned closer.

Anastasia blinked.

She noticed how close his face was.

Despite being slightly surprised, she closed her eyes and readied her lips nonetheless.

Vincent leaned more and reached her ear, his hands wrapping around her shoulders.

"Thank you."

Vincent was grateful to her for being there and asking him to open up.

Anastasia opened her eyes and looked down.

"..."

’...uh oh.’

The tip of her ears turned red but she immediately reciprocated the hug and leaned her face against his head, rubbing his back.

She tried to pretend she didn’t just act like that.

Vincent broke the hug and looked into her eyes.

His face was quite close once again.

’Young master... stop giving me mixed signals...’

Anastasia felt ticklish on her nose from Vincent’s breath.

If he wanted to kiss, he should just kiss!

Vincent took a deep breath and readied himself for the discussion.

This was it. The next words would either alarm the entire manor or bring him closer to the truth.

"Anastasia, how was my past?"

The maid’s thoughts could not process what was just asked for a second.

Seeing her blank expression, Vincent clarified, "I mean, how was I in the past and how am I compared to then? I want a detailed explanation on whatever you know about from before I decided to give up alcohol and attended the masquerade ball with you."

He overexplained despite there not being a need.

Anastasia understood him the first time.

She sighed in relief and shook her head.

"Young master, next time, just ask these questions right away."

She got worked up for nothing.

Vincent stared at her for a few seconds.

’Ah... now that I think... I framed it very well. I didn’t tell her I have no memory of my past or stuff like that. Tch. Got her unnecessarily worried.’

"Hey, I had to ensure you didn’t reveal my secrets."

He tried to ease the awkwardness.

Anastasia stared with utmost seriousness.

"Young master, any and every secret of yours is safe with me. If you ask me to hide it from Madam as well, I’ll accept any punishment from her but won’t reveal it."

"..."

’Why so hardcore?’

Vincent shook his hand. "It’s alright. If mom asks, just answer her by making sure things go in my favor."

’What does that mean?’ Anastasia had trouble comprehending.

"Anyway, what do you think?"

Anastasia thought about it for a few seconds and answered honestly.

She joined House D’Arc when she was six, the same age as Vincent and Vanessa.

She had seen how the two grew up.

Vanessa practiced martial arts everyday and kept improving.

Vincent played around with other noble kids.

That’s how they spent their time until they hit puberty.

Once the growth spurt began, Vanessa grew by leaps and bounds.

By age fourteen, she was quite tall compared to the rest of the kids while Vincent was shorter than most.

Vanessa was the strongest due to her martial arts background, and somewhere down the line, Vincent realized he could never compare to her.

The inferiority complex never ended and he always found himself in his twin sister’s shadows.

One day, at around age 16, he had the first sip of wine.

The feeling was euphoric.

He kept drinking since then, and tried to chase a high from alcohol, eventually getting termed as the ’Wastrel Heir’.

Not a waking moment was gone when alcohol wasn’t within Vincent’s system.

The alcohol made him do multiple terrible things with the most prominent being misbehaving with a noble lady.

Vincent lifted her skirt and tried to see what was inside.

At this point, the current Vincent closed his eyes and took a deep breath, trying not to crash out.

’What the fuck was wrong with this guy? He felt inferior just because he was short and couldn’t do shit? Dude...’

A vein popped on Vincent’s forehead.

’...what would he have done if his parents died when he was thirteen and left him all alone in this world? He would surely have cash but if he didn’t manage it well enough, he wouldn’t be able to pay rent or complete high school.’

The old Vincent had a loving family and a rich background but he chose such a life for himself.

A life of comparison and a life of alcohol addiction.

’If this was my sister—no, Vanessa IS my sister. I meant, if I was with Vanessa when I was young, I would’ve done martial arts with her. We both could’ve practiced and grown to unprecedented levels. Why the fuck would I waste time on other snobby noble kids?’

Vincent shook his head.

’Even if I wouldn’t have practiced martial arts, I would’ve actually felt proud for my sister. There’s no reason to compare ourselves. She is she. I am me. Life is not a competition.’

Finding her young master deep in thought, Anastasia waited for him to collect himself.

’Man... I would’ve just felt really proud if she grew more. In fact, even now, I am quite short but so what? I am weaker than her, weaker than Anastasia and Leona, but so what?’

’There’s still so much joy in life. The endless amount of work sucks but the tea Anastasia serves in between is heavenly.’

’When Leona came and took the pile of reports from me, finishing those in ten minutes which would’ve taken me two hours... I don’t feel jealous, I feel proud and happy knowing I have such a genius girl as my fiancée.’

’I haven’t interacted much with mom but that day when she comforted me after I awakened my cultivation and then sent an axe along with Vanessa herself on one request... it felt so special. It felt so loving.’

’Then... when Vanessa arrived and I interacted with her... although she looked intimidating with her tall figure and holding an axe and a spear... I could feel a familial connection. I knew this was my sister and there was absolutely no inferiority.’

’I treated her like my twin sister and tried to make her laugh. She actually smiled and we had so much fun even though it was a simple breakfast. Later, I couldn’t see her, but even when I am here in the Capital, she destabilized an anchor and killed those monster rats alone.’

’I have nothing but immense respect, and love for her. Fuck this old Vincent and his bitch ass inferiority.’

Vincent suddenly showed his middle finger to the sky while gritting his teeth.

’You didn’t cherish what you had, but I surely will. If you ever try to come back, don’t blame me for bullying you.’

When modern Vincent was sixteen, he was trying to keep his grades up, cook for himself, clean the house, looked for a job, and not having the time or the looks, couldn’t land a girl and busied himself in pornography.

Life was hard.

The aristocratic Vincent on the other hand went on the path of alcoholism because of feeling inferior despite having everything.

The modern Vincent hated this.

’Be pessimistic and everything around you feels depressing. Have an optimistic attitude and at least the tea will taste delicious every single time.’

Vincent snorted.

"...young master?"

"Yeah!?"

Vincent snapped.

Anastasia was taken aback, noticing the sudden irritation.

Vincent hadn’t expressed such an emotion since the ball.

Realizing what he just did, Vincent quickly came to his senses and held Anastasia’s hands.

"I’m sorry. I wasn’t mad at you, just mad at myself..."

Anastasia nodded. "It’s okay. If there’s anything I can do, please let me know."

"Anything?" Vincent’s ears perked.

He was slowly getting out of the frustrated mood.

The old Vincent was gone.

The past was the past.

Getting worked up over it in the present was useless.

Vincent focused on improving his mood.

Anastasia lightly nodded her head.

Vincent leaned his face close to hers.

"Anything?"

Anastasia rolled her eyes.

"Yes, young master. Anything."

Vincent held her face and got further close.

"What if I..."

"Just do it!"
