D’Arc Manor, the Capital.

Vincent leaned by the windowsill.

The morning sunshine seeped through the window, the clear blue sky hinting at good omen.

Seated by the bed’s edge, Leona stared at her fiancé’s silhouette.

They just finished breakfast and had come upstairs.

"There’s a little over a month until our marriage."

Leona remarked casually.

Vincent angled himself just enough to let the sunshine illuminate his pale face.

"Hmm..."

He held his chin and looked at her, contemplating what she said a little too deeply.

A few moments passed.

Leona wondered why he was in such deep thoughts over a casual remark. Perhaps, he was calculating his house’s conditions until the marriage time?

Perhaps he wished for the county to stabilize so he can be married off in peace?

A few more moments passed.

"Okay, I’ve thought it through."

Vincent nodded and looked at Leona.

"Leona."

"Yes?"

Leona tilted her head slightly. What conclusion did he arrive at?

Vincent walked up to her and held her hand with proper etiquette.

"Would you like to marry me?"

"..."

Leona was silent for a good few seconds.

With her usual calm and emotional gaze, she stared into Vincent’s eyes.

"I think it’s a bit too late now."

"Really?"

"Yes."

"A pity..."

Vincent shook his head and took the sheathed dagger from his waist, handing it to Leona.

"...I hope in my next life, I am early."

Leona nodded.

"A quick reincarnation will be a good head start."

She just unsheathed the Spirit Iron dagger when a voice said,

"Please reincarnate after reading the young lady’s telegram."

Leona and Vincent turned toward the door.

Anastasia walked in with the same composed expression she wore every morning.

Vincent stared at her for a few seconds longer than necessary, trying his best to not recall last night’s events.

Anastasia handed the letter and stood aside, not staring into Vincent’s eyes.

Vincent unfolded the letter and read.

"Get to the county by dusk."

"Bring Leona."

"Vanessa D’Arc."

That was all.

Vincent did not waste time guessing why she had summoned him so urgently. There were far too many crises within the county, something must’ve surely come up that needed his immediate attention.

He simply folded the paper and looked at Anastasia.

"We need to reach the county by dusk."

She nodded.

"I’ll prepare for departure."

An hour later.

The train station was filled with people, especially merchants as D’Arc had opened the railways for the general population.

On the schedule board, trains arriving from D’Arc County and departing toward the north had increased in frequency.

Vincent was given a report for the same and knew it was due to the King’s orders. As it did not involve other noble houses or harmed D’Arc’s interests, Vincent didn’t pay much attention to it.

As his carriage stopped by the station, many noticed the D’Arc insignia and immediately surrounded.

These folks were the commoners and expressed their sincerest gratitude to D’Arc for letting them access the railways.

If it weren’t for the guards surrounding Vincent and escorting him to his train cabin, he would’ve missed the train.

The eight-hour journey to Copper Town went without a hitch and Vincent reached two hours before dusk.

The station was filled with freight carrying minerals with a few passenger trains scheduled to leave in a while.

Vincent noticed quite a few carts carrying unused traps and cages.

There was also a large board stating the mountain pass is closed.

Vincent’s group moved toward the exit while being escorted by the Railguards.

A group of loud men carrying hunting rifles were making their way toward the platform.

"I tell ya Billy, the game can’t be hunted no more!"

"Stop being a wuss. If not for your paranoia, we wouldn’t be leaving for the Central Region."

"I did not drink before the hunt today, Billy. For good luck. And what did this luck lead to? A rabbit chased me and bit me. Rabbit, ya hear!?"

"I told you to stop with this. If this gets out in the Central Region too, we’ll become the laugh of every tavern again."

"Tch."

These people sure were lively, thought Vincent as he moved past them.

Leona had no reaction to this. Whatever she heard was without her choice as the group was too loud.

However, Anastasia’s thoughts were different.

’It has started.’

’An almost three year long battle with the highland monsters.’

After D’Arc fell and Duke Brunelle took over, it took him three years to take over the throne.

It was not that he wasn’t prepared, but that he was delayed.

Monsters kept pouring in from the nearby highlands and he had to spend a lot of resources and manpower to fight them.

If he let them free, they would’ve invaded the mainland and this would’ve resulted in him being held responsible — a major political blunder and hindrance to his plans.

Duke Brunelle stayed calm and rational throughout that period. It took a bit more time but he was eventually successful.

’Three years...’

Now that this region was still in D’Arc’s control, this was the amount of time they would have to spend fighting them.

She looked around the train station.

It was packed. Lively. Without any signs of damage.

’Bordering the highlands, Copper Town will be the first to be implicated, becoming a battlefield.’

’This station might not remain intact and a refugee crisis would occur again.’

Anastasia softly sighed.

’I can’t tell the young master about all this, but it is crucial.’

’I’ll try to indirectly hint at it later.’

Anastasia kept note of this and followed Vincent to the carriage which set off for the town center.

As he entered the town, Vincent noticed many shops were already closed with even a bakery not being open.

The roads were empty and the little people that could be seen were rushing toward the town square.

At the town square, Vincent saw quite a lot of residents gathered around.

They were quiet and surrounded the large fountain in a circle.

Railguards, which also had the Knight Order knights mixed in, were standing in various places, keeping guard.

People rushing at the square from other places joined this group.

Nobody said a single word and were standing still, as if waiting for something.

The carriage moved toward the fountain.

Noticing the D’Arc insignia, the crowd parted.

As it stopped by the fountain and Vincent got down, he noticed his sister’s tall figure.

Behind her, almost a head taller, was the green-haired Felicia.

’Hm?’

How did Felicia get taller than his sister?

He looked down, only to feel a shiver run down his spine.

His body trembled and he instinctively took a few steps back.

An open mouth was stuffed with multiple people. Some had their bodies pierced by the large, curved fangs.

It was the mouth of a black snake that was coiled around the fountain.

Felicia was standing atop its head, calmly staring in his direction.

Vincent’s stomach tightened.

He felt the snake move even when it wasn’t.

His grip on his dagger tightened and he took a few more steps back, his legs somewhat trembling.

"It’s dead," Vanessa walked toward him and said.

She found Vincent’s reaction odd, but then realized how this might be a normal reaction to seeing such a monster.

Maybe it was her that had gotten numb to their sights.

She stopped before Vincent.

"It’s good that you’re here before dusk."

Vincent shifted his gaze and looked up.

"W..." he almost stuttered but stopped in a timely manner.

He took a deep breath.

Almost like changing masks, his face now had a calm expression.

Vanessa noticed this, wondering how he could overcome his fear so quickly.

"Why?" Vincent asked calmly. "Is there something important happening at dusk?"

Vanessa nodded her head and pointed her spear at the snake.

"These monsters are flocking toward the town and their numbers increase by dusk."

"Three border settlements were abandoned overnight and the number today will be even greater. Many of those inhabitants are expected to reach the town gates by nightfall, so you can guess what’s happening."

Vincent frowned.

It was yet another refugee crisis!

He pointed at the crowd and asked, "They’re refugees?"

"Not yet."

Felicia’s soothing voice reached Vincent as she stepped down from the snake’s head.

There was a professional smile on her face, one a subordinate would have when talking to their superior.

"For now, they’re frightened residents who want the gates closed and the grains kept to themselves."

The crowd remained unnaturally quiet as they heard her words.

Felicia then pointed at the bodies inside the snake’s mouth.

"They attacked the Railguards and tried to shut the gates when the refugees arrived," Felicia said. "It’s under control now."

Her pleasant smile remained unchanged.

The residents lacked neither food nor protection, yet fear had been enough for them to turn against the people maintaining order, turn against D’Arc itself.

Vincent did not particularly like Felicia’s method. It could’ve been handled better.

However, riots could not be allowed to happen and if this is what had to be done, then so be it.

He was just glad there weren’t any children within the mix.

A sharp clang broke Vincent’s thoughts.

Vanessa struck the snake’s transparent scale with the shaft of her spear.

"Scales aren’t supposed to sound like metal." She looked toward Leona. "Find out what they’re made of. Bullets are penetrating them."

Before Leona could approach the snake, a Railguard rushed into the square.

"The third border settlement has reached the northern road."

Vanessa turned.

"And?"

The Railguard caught his breath.

"More monsters were sighted behind them."

A bell began tolling from the northern wall.
