The man asking for help did not give Vincent much time to answer.

Another gunshot went off from the wall behind him, followed by shouting as several soldiers dragged a wounded man through the gate. The town was still fighting, and Vincent could see more monsters moving through the farmland outside.

"Please!" the man repeated. "There are more coming from the northern fields!"

"I can see that." Vincent rested the axe against his shoulder and looked around. "First, where exactly am I?"

Vincent was in no hurry. The scale of monsters attacking was nowhere close to the sea of monsters he had seen descend on Copper Town.

The man stared at him with a dumbfounded expression.

Vincent stared back.

"You don’t know?" He asked.

Vincent pointed at the highlands. "I entered through the mountains."

The man frowned. He could not comprehend how someone could cross the mighty mountains and come here from what the locals liked to call ’the beyond’.

His gaze turned to look at Anastasia, trying to decipher whether they were some savages.

Anastasia stood calmly beside Vincent in a prim-proper black dress.

Vincent had a bloodied axe on his shoulder and was in neat and expensive-looking clothes meant for adventure.

They did not look like savages in the slightest sense, which made the man really question his own reality.

A gunshot resounded nearby and startled the man. His attention got back to the present and he realized Vincent and Anastasia’s help was really needed!

He hurriedly said, "This is Harrowfield, southern territory of the White Apricot Kingdom."

As the words registered in Vincent’s mind, he seemed to faintly recall having heard of this name.

’White Apricot... White Apricot...’

After thinking for several seconds, he remembered seeing it among some old trade records while working through D’Arc’s finances.

White Apricot was one of several small kingdoms beyond the Highlands. House D’Arc used to receive fruit, medicinal crops, wine and some strange sweet preserves from them through the mountain pass.

Vincent roughly understood where he was. He looked past the walls again and asked, "These are the Valley Kingdoms? Like the ones called Golden Quince Kingdom, Red Persimmon Kingdom, and White Apricot Kingdom?"

"Yes," the man nodded. "And you are in the White Apricot Kingdom."

’Damn. I crossed the Highlands to reach this place? Wasn’t it difficult to come here even with the mountain pass?’

Vincent realized he was in a really isolated kingdom. It had no routes connecting to other places except for the one mountain pass that connected it to the Falkner Kingdom via D’Arc County.

These valley people traded in limited quantities with outsiders because coming and going out was really difficult for merchants and others.

These guys didn’t export much and didn’t import much other than some weapons and medicine.

Little was known about them, but now that Vincent saw the geography himself, he was slightly startled.

’These kingdoms are super isolated. If the sea of monsters come here, I am gonna get buried!’

Vincent’s first instinct was to escape!

Anastasia was looking at the farmlands and had other thoughts.

She pulled Vincent’s sleeve and leaned down to whisper, "Young master, we should help them."

"What?" Vincent quickly turned to look at her. He leaned to her ear and whispered, "Do you want us to die here?"

Anastasia shook her head and whispered back, "Think properly, young master. The scale of the beasts here is far less, and it’s still manageable. You’ve already done it once in Copper Town, you can surely do it again."

Vincent did not know if this was flattery or just confidence that Anastasia had in him or whether she was purposefully saying some good words to make him work...

Whatever it was, it turned Vincent silent.

The man nearby was panicking and he could not bear to see the strange sight of the two people.

They were speaking directly in each other’s ears and it was really weird to look at.

"Good sirs, please help us!" He cried out.

Vincent’s attention returned. He gave one look to Anastasia and then harrumphed.

That’s right. If not him, who else will save these isolated weirdos?

Vincent looked at the man. "I’ll help you. So tell me, who’s commanding here?"

The man felt slightly relieved and answered, "Captain Rolan."

"Alright, go fetch him."

The man frowned and stared at Vincent strangely. What did this youngster mean by fetch him? Was the captain someone so easy to get hold of?

The man did not express his displeasure and instead said, "He’s organizing the eastern defense. I don’t think he can be called."

Vincent forced himself to not roll his eyes and said, "Whatever he’s organizing will only lead to getting buried six feet under."

The man was offended at the insult and was about to retort when Vincent continued, "Tell him there are two strangers who came through the Highlands and know why the monsters are here."

The man stopped. The last line fully won him over and he hurried to get the captain.

Vincent walked farther into the town while waiting for the man and the captain.

Harrowfield was much larger than he had first assumed from outside.

Brick homes and shops surrounded a broad central square, though most shutters were closed and people crowded beneath awnings or beside wagons packed with belongings.

The square itself had become an emergency camp.

Wounded soldiers occupied the steps of a large stone building while carts loaded with grain moved constantly through the streets.

Vincent watched one formation of soldiers leave through another gate.

Then another.

"Where are they going?" he asked a nearby guard.

"Why do you care? Get back to your house." The guard snorted.

Vincent wasn’t offended and shook his hand, "Alright then, keep your secrets."

He simply walked away and confused Anastasia.

"Young master, you’re not going to give him some witty reply? He spoke rudely."

Vincent shrugged and jumped to sit atop a wooden cart, his feet dangling in the air.

"It’s his loss. Without someone telling him it’s useless to not engage with the monsters, he will keep fighting until he dies. So why should I bother with some canon fodder?"

Anastasia looked at him strangely, and in a new light.

Vincent turned toward the group of guards disappearing around the corner.

Then there were more groups going elsewhere.

Captain Rolan arrived shortly after.

He was an older man with a grey mustache, muddy boots and an old military coat that looked as though he had been wearing it since before Vincent was born.

"Could you have not stayed by the gates?" The man from before panted and said.

Vincent ignored him.

Captain Rolan looked at the elegant clothing and could tell at a glance Vincent and Anastasia weren’t simple people.

The man bringing him had also said they were really strong, which made Rolan more cautious.

"You’re the travelers?" He asked first.

Vincent glanced down at the man.

"Vincent D’Arc."

That was all Vincent said, but it made a few bells ring in the captain’s head.

His eyes moved across Vincent’s face again, properly this time.

"D’Arc?"

"Yes."

"The Falkner D’Arc?"

Vincent nodded.

Captain Rolan finally understood who Vincent was.

D’Arc was known to many in the valley kingdoms as the majority of the goods basically moved through them, and they were also connected by the mountain pass.

The captain didn’t know who Vincent was but he knew D’Arc and this was enough to make him straighten slightly.

"My apologies, Your Lordship. We received no notice that House D’Arc was sending anyone."

Vincent shook his hand. "They didn’t. I got lost."

Rolan stared at him.

Vincent smiled lightly. "It’s a long story, not relevant to saving your kingdoms. Now, tell me, did you order the guards to defend the town?"

The captain shook his head. "I command a small unit, M’lord."

"That sucks. Well, can you at least cancel their orders?"

Captain Rolan shook his head. "That’s the regional commander’s job, I’m afraid."

Vincent nodded. "Alright. Go fetch him then."

Rolan frowned while the man beside him was sweating bullets as he had flashbacks of before when the same was ordered to him.

The man could not help but wonder, ’Captain Rolan is respectful to him. Maybe it’s some big shot? But then, can he really be so audacious to command him?’

While frowning, Captain Rolan said, "Your Lordship, Commander Vaust is coordinating the entire southern district."

Vincent nodded again. "Good. That sounds like someone I need."

"He cannot simply abandon his command because—"

A scream came from near the eastern wall.

Neither continued talking.

Several soldiers ran past them carrying rifles.

Vincent watched them leave, then pointed toward the street they disappeared through.

"You’re sending soldiers everywhere. They’re dying. I want to speak to whoever can stop sending them to their deaths because there’s a better way to go about this. Weren’t you told by him that I know why the monsters are flooding this place?"

Vincent yawned slightly. "You really should hurry if you don’t want to see your comrades die."

Captain Rolan slightly gritted his teeth. He did not look convinced, but Vincent’s identity was too big to prevent his request, and if he really could save the people from unnecessary deaths, then failing to adhere to his command would make him the murderer of all.

A messenger was quickly sent.
