Moon cursed out loud; he was suddenly surrounded by roughly forty individuals, armored and going in with their full Echo capacity.
He didn’t know what kind of Combat Arts they used; he himself had zero experience when it comes to Combat Arts thanks to the nature of his Echo that refused to flow through his body.
Shuuuuu~
Rumble~
Ding!
Moon sidestepped instantly; a cutting glare passed by his face.
Yet, he barely managed to react.
For a moment, Moon felt his senses getting overwhelmed. He felt their Echo activations, but it was his first time sensing that many at once.
His eyes darted, and his mind failed to find even a moment to place his confusion into words.
For not every Echo activation was an attack, for once he successfully evaded—
Ding!
He wasn’t sure what or where the attack was coming from. Fate Alert didn’t point to it, and ranged attacks weren’t Moon’s forte.
He didn’t have to think for the decision to be made, or wait for his body feeling threatened to react.
Moon sprinted.
CRASH~
’They’re here to kill me.’ Moon steeled his heart and started regaining his composure once his body started moving with purpose.
Where he was standing, someone landed a punch, sending a wave of sand into the air.
Moon didn’t look behind; he had already marked his target.
He also made a few decisions. He would not rely on or look at Fate Alert notifications.
Not only did he lack the time to check the Alert value to see if an attack was life-threatening or not, but he also couldn’t tell if evading an attack at a split second might send him straight into the range of another. Fate Alert wasn’t reliable now, and he wasn’t able to follow every single Echo activation with his senses either.
Thus, he decided to attack first. ’Echo is just a weapon; it’s just another battle,’ he thought.
Soon, the one he marched at, who had an angular-looking helmet and a fixed visor over his eyes, raised his hand; his gauntlet glowed faintly before descending again.
A palm strike. ’What the hell is that?’ Moon exclaimed inwardly, for palm strikes didn’t exist on the first floor.
Regardless, Moon waited for the attack to descend.
He evaded to the left of his opponent, knowing too well their helmets restricted their field of vision.
The one next to Moon’s current target in the encirclement, who had a helmet with red mane-like fur, dashed at the two of them.
His fist radiated with power before aiming for Moon, who slid past the one in the angular helmet.
Moon inserted his fingers between the plates over the back of the angular helmet.
He waited for a slight second before—
He yanked him to the left, as the man couldn’t turn his head around in time.
Puff~
An explosion resounded as the Echo-fueled fist met an ally’s chest.
The hit threw both Moon and the angular-helmeted man in the same direction. Though Moon wasn’t sure about his current state, his eyes darted to where he would land.
Yet, he rejoiced in his heart. Echo was highly destructive, which gave him room to move and breathe. As for the armor, it restricted their field of vision.
Even though that punch sent him flying along with the one he was trying to use as a shield—
He smiled in excitement.
Moon rotated his body midair after letting go of the angular helmet.
Hisssssssssss~
He slid across the soft sand, leaning forward to use his hands to slow himself down.
"Hell, what a stupidly strong attack!" he exclaimed.
Looking at where he was standing, he was just a few centimeters away from the ring boundary.
Moon pursed his lips. "At least I’m no longer surrounded, right?" he said as everyone else turned their heads to face him, minus the one in the angular helmet who got thrown out.
After nearly dying a couple of times, "Ready for round two?" Moon asked.
In the audience, Lexie was fuming.
"Why is no one disqualifying these bastards?" she spat through gritted teeth.
She started looking around the ring. "Where’s that nice yellow giant?" she asked, searching for Uon but unable to locate him.
Next to her, Nola was looking with eyes wide open and hands clasped tightly together.
Talia and Boa were also watching everything without batting an eye.
Talia’s eyes darted for a second to where Samuel and Ed were seated, before returning to Moon.
"They probably allowed it," she said in a hushed voice, without elaborating further.
Still, Boa asked, "Why isn’t he using his Echo too?" she inquired.
Lexie rubbed her temples. "His Echo... I don’t think he could use it even if he wanted."
"What do you mean?" Boa asked back without averting her gaze.
"I only saw him use it once, and his Echo isn’t in a normal state," Lexie tried to explain.
"How so?" Boa was still curious.
"It looks like a bouncing slime," Lexie explained before adding, "I have never seen anything like that."
Boa turned her head to face Lexie. "Such a thing was possible?"
Lexie shook her head. "How would I know? I’ve been studying the Nature of Echo for a decade, but not once have I heard or seen something like that."
Talia cut them off. "It exists, but as a result of certain arts, and it is possible to reverse after some time."
Boa blinked. "So his Echo is really useless?"
Talia shook her head lightly. "He probably has other reasons for not using it."
Below, Basil ran from his seat, heading to where Barrett and Dorbish were.
"Barrett bro," he called; he waved his hand, and a dagger appeared in it. "I’ll join Boss."
Barrett looked at Basil’s eagerness; his face looked heavy. "Weren’t you dead sure Boss would win without facing any hindrance?"
"Boss would win for sure, but these bastards are cheating!" Basil retorted. "It shouldn’t have been like this."
"That’s why Boss said intel is for the weak." Barrett shook his head. "Imagine if you told Boss what you knew, only for him to see this instead."
"Barrett bro, you already know this is against the rules. How would I know something that was never said?" Basil spoke in evident anger, his arms shaking.
Barrett didn’t argue further; neither of them had armor like this anyway... So they would break the rules with their weapons and Echo at the same time.
He fished his saber from his inventory, ready to move with Basil.
They didn’t think of asking Colten for help; even though he helped with the gambling, he was still not like them.
"Sit down, both of you," Dorbish, who was silent all this time, said.
Basil looked at him, squinting for a moment. "Fellow Ascender bro?" he asked.
Dorbish pursed his lips. "My name is Dorbish."
"Dorbish bro, we gotta get moving," Basil said in urgency.
"You two are weak. You’ll either get yourself killed or get Moon to waste his time protecting you," Dorbish advised. "Best case, you would survive and get your Echo sealed or get disqualified from the next trial, so don’t waste his effort."
Basil blinked a few times, but he was dead set on joining Moon.
He ignored Dorbish and didn’t talk further to Barrett. He turned around, moving toward the arena. Only then did he make eye contact with Moon for a split second.
There, Moon gave him the most threatening look he might have ever seen in his life.
Basil instantly turned around. "Haha, maybe I’m overthinking things," he said as he sat down next to Barrett.
He sighed. "So, which bastard allowed this mess?"
Hearing this, Ed pursed his lips. "I’m getting cursed for free these days."
