Train Survival: I Can Evolve Everything!

Chapter 25: Zhao Lin's Talent and Plea for Help

["So hot so hot so hot so hot so hot!!! I'm about to explode from the heat! What's the temperature outside anyway!?"]

["At least 40 degrees Celsius. The hottest days where I lived before were about like this."]

["Water... someone sell me some water, I can't take it anymore."]

["Didn't you collect rainwater during yesterday's thunderstorm? Even if it's not perfectly clean, boiling it would make it drinkable, right?"]

["Of course I collected some, but what's the use? In this heat, I sweat out any water I drink immediately. And this train is just a metal box - with the sun beating down, it's no different from an oven!"]

["Just endure it. We'll reach the next station in a few hours. The broadcast didn't say we'd encounter this hellish weather there too, did it?"]

["Endure? Hah! Look at your mental stats. Haven't you noticed? Ever since this heat started, both mental and physical attributes have been dropping continuously. The only thing that slightly slows the decline is splashing some cool water on myself... At this rate, even if I don't die from heatstroke, I'll probably go insane first."]

Wiping sweat from his forehead, Ye Qiyan gulped down an entire bottle of mineral water before checking his personal interface.

[Physical: 98] [Mental: 110]

"My mental state seems different from others'? Could it be from eating too many White Forest Fruits?"

Bang!

A gunshot disrupted his thoughts.

Following the sound, he saw the Warning Device firing.

Outside the train, a group of emaciated hyenas had gathered, chasing after the train.

Their speed posed no threat to the now Level 3 train. What concerned him was that unlike the Night Survival events, there had been no train broadcast warning about these monsters - they had simply appeared and begun pursuit.

This might become the new normal.

"So they don't appear all at once? Completely random then."

No one had mentioned this in the chat room, meaning Ye Qiyan had simply been unlucky to encounter these hyenas.

[You have a new message]

The private chat interface flickered.

Someone had sent him a message.

Zhao Lin: [Brother Ye, are there monsters outside your train?]

It was Zhao Lin, the maker of automatic fishing rods and a reliable trading partner.

Had she encountered monsters too?

Ye Qiyan glanced at the hyenas now falling behind.

["You encountered some too?"]

["Yes! If I hadn't barely managed to increase my train's speed to 35 km/h after the fourth station, they would have caught me. Those birds were terrifying - many crashed into the windows. If not for the gun you sold me, I'd be dead."]

Birds? Different from his hyenas then.

["I see. So what do you want to buy this time?"]

["......I need upgrade materials, but I'm out of Train Coins. Can I pay with fish instead?"]

Train Number E-3-7741

Zhao Lin, dressed lightly for the heat, anxiously watched the private chat.

Sweat dripped down her wheat-colored skin.

She feared Ye Qiyan would reject her request.

But she couldn't think of anyone else who might sell upgrade materials.

With speed equating to survival, and the next Night Survival event just two days away, all surviving conductors were hoarding upgrade materials to improve their trains.

"If even Brother Ye won't sell to me... what should I do? Ugh, my talent is such a curse."

Zhao Lin also possessed a special talent.

[Luck Conservation]

[Good luck follows bad luck, and bad luck follows good luck]

At the third station, her terrible luck landed her in a dark, damp bat cave. Too afraid to leave her train, she endured three hours inside.

But her fourth station was a fishpond. Using the fishing rod she'd made early on, she caught over a hundred fish and a Level 1 treasure chest in just three hours - without any bait, as if the fish were blind to her hook.

Undoubtedly, that had been good luck.

But next?

Next would certainly be misfortune. She likely wouldn't be able to upgrade her train, leaving only one station before the next Night Survival.

Zhao Lin didn't dare gamble on finding enough resources at a single station.

Her only hope was that Ye Qiyan, the only person who might sell her resources, would agree.

Seeing Zhao Lin's message, Ye Qiyan immediately rejected the offer.

He wasn't short on food now. The only reason he'd sold her a hundred bullets before was because he'd wanted fish and the Low-Grade Bullets had become useless to him.

["Sorry, not interested."]

Zhao Lin panicked, her lifeline slipping away.

["No, please Brother Ye! Please, just save me this once. I beg you to sell me some resources. You're the only person I can think of who might have upgrade materials to spare! If I don't upgrade now, I won't survive the next Night Survival."]

["You still have two stations. It's not impossible to reach Level 2."]

["Others might manage, but I can't... Brother Ye, I have a talent..."]

Gritting her teeth, Zhao Lin revealed her talent's secret.

This was the first time Ye Qiyan had seen someone else's talent besides his own Sublimation.

"Alternating cycles of good and bad luck? What an abstract talent. Mine's definitely better. No wonder she's desperate - if the next station brings misfortune, even good luck afterward might not guarantee an upgrade."

Ye Qiyan considered briefly.

["How much do you need?"]

["38kg of wood, 22kg of metal, and 14 mechanical parts."]

["You must have opened a treasure chest before. Give me its contents plus ten fish. After you upgrade, I want to see your upgrade options. And don't try giving me that fishing rod blueprint - I want the chest you opened last station. Don't get it wrong."]

He did have the materials. As the first conductor to trade materials for firearms, even now those guns could hardly fetch such fundamental upgrade resources.

But Ye Qiyan wasn't running a charity. Helping her now was simply an investment - someone with a talent might prove a valuable trading partner later.

["Yes! Thank you! You're such a good person! I'll repay you!"]

The trade completed. In a flash of light, several items and ten freshwater fish appeared before him.
