Train Survival: I Can Evolve Everything!

Chapter 523: [Fragments of the Demon Card 2/2]

"I cannot comprehend... why?"

"What kind of person are you, truly?"

As holy radiance manifested on the Tear-Engraving Sword, it shone in concert with the black Inverted Cross empowered by Defiance.

Aberration increasingly sensed the kind of conclusion it was about to face.

Whether it was this human or the young girl by his side, both seemed to possess the capability to kill it.

Aberration felt a sense of unwillingness, identical to that of the demon man it had created.

"The outcome is not yet known. I will resist."

A vast number of Strange Species appeared within the distorted space.

These Strange Species were not large, each only the size of a mosquito.

[Void-Devouring Insect (No Level)]

[Strange Species/Demon?]

The appraisal information remained bizarre. The only target of this sky-filling swarm of insects was Ye Qiyan.

They charged towards the Wandering Star Holy Sigil, like moths to a flame, yet they truly began gnawing away at the Sigil's defenses.

This was not surprising enough to shock anyone, nor did it frighten Ye Qiyan.

Anything can appear in the Wasteland.

The Wandering Star Holy Sigil, enhanced and Sublimated by the power of the Golden Tribe, was comparable to absolute defense in its fearless state.

But even the Golden Tribe itself had already perished.

Pure defense can never hold forever.

Because no one knows what kind of artifact might emerge from the endless Wasteland to shatter your defenses, or simply ignore them entirely.

Thus, even the most powerful Train Conductor must continuously advance, continuously acquire new strength.

The charging of the Tear-Engraving Sword was nearing completion.

Red Tears wanted to swing the sword and sweep these insects away, but Ye Qiyan stopped her.

"No need for such trouble."

He raised his free hand.

A golden book hovered above his palm.

The pages turned without wind.

A purplish-red halo spread outward from beneath his feet.

Hum—

One ring, two rings...

The trailing halo caught up with the leading one, connecting end to end, forming a dazzling Light Screen within the space.

[Spirit: 296 (Witness Truth and Falsehood) (Shadow of the End)]

Ye Qiyan stood up and, together with Red Tears, raised the Tear-Engraving Sword, pointing it in the direction where [Aberration] was.

[Spirit: 296 → 74]

Two hundred and twenty-two points of Spirit were consumed instantly, providing [Reality] to the power gathered upon the Tear-Engraving Sword.

The Light Screen flared. All insects enveloped within its range simultaneously fell into stasis, and then...

Descended into madness!

They began devouring each other. They turned and bit Aberration. They committed suicide. They died.

A path opened.

Aberration saw Ye Qiyan at this moment.

What a dazzling human he was.

Feet treading upon radiance, body bearing the Ring of Evil, the beautiful Demon Girl standing by his side.

As if... all [Evil] should submit to him.

From the first day it gained self-awareness until now, Aberration felt the emotion called [regret] for the very first time.

[His demon seems more powerful than any before]

[If I too could become his demon, perhaps I would have a chance to become like the sword by his side]

[But, no, there are no ifs]

Aberration understood clearly that this human would never accept it.

And that sword could truly kill it.

Now, the only path left was to resist.

Even though it was destined to lose.

"End this."

Ye Qiyan spoke thus.

And Aberration made its final act of defiance against its master.

[Aberration—]

The conceptually defined power of Aberration traversed space, ignored all defenses, transformed into a spike, and thrust towards Ye Qiyan.

It wanted to permanently imprint its [Aberration] concept upon its master.

But this intangible spike was severed in two by a brilliant Holy Light the instant before it could touch Ye Qiyan.

The Tear-Engraving Sword was finally swung.

Its attack [purified] everything around. Ye Qiyan could sense that his Demon Cards, except for Red Tears, were all feeling anger and discomfort from this pure Holy Light.

As if this power was originally meant for hunting demons.

The sword fell.

Holy Light and the black radiance of the Inverted Cross advanced in an interwoven dance.

Crack, crack...

A crisp shattering sound rang out. Aberration's Ring of Evil gradually vanished. The altar that bore it and was distorted by it turned to dust in that same instant.

The radiance burst through the sealed space and spread outward.

For a hundred miles in every direction, everything was bathed in this light.

All the Strange Species turned to nothingness within this radiance.

[Stamina: 12] [Spirit: 1]

"Phew... Did I just hit the jackpot?"

He released Red Tears's hand, which was still interlocked with his, and walked down towards the perfectly leveled, mirror-smooth ground below. There, a Demon Card lay fallen, a crack now visible upon it.

"...You have won."

Aberration's voice emerged once more.

This attack specifically designed to counter demons, combined with the empowerment of Defiance and the inherent strength of the Tear-Engraving Sword, had not completely annihilated the Demon Card named Aberration.

It still lived, but death was not far off.

"If you weren't a demon, I might not have won so easily."

"If I weren't a demon, I wouldn't have grown to this point today, Master. You need not be modest."

When a demon is about to die, its words are good?

No. This Demon Card named Aberration, from beginning to end, was not crazed and furious like [Gluttony] or [Control].

This entity, from start to finish, had never displayed those boring, laughable fits of madness.

"May I ask you a question?"

The crack on Aberration deepened.

"Though I rarely answer others, go ahead."

"You are human. Humans despise non-human entities. Do you... feel the same?"

Ye Qiyan did not answer immediately. He simply gestured for Red Tears to come to his side and patted the Demon Girl's head.

"What I dislike has never been non-human monsters. I only detest those who displease me, regardless of whether they are human or not."

The crack on Aberration continued to deepen, about to split the entire card face.

It fell silent for a moment, then, with a voice that had become intermittent, left its final words.

"...Master, if... you truly possess some ability to make demons stronger... please do not... let them become... the Final Evil... That is a... mistaken... path..."

"Master, I wish for you to become... the greatest..."

"Train Conductor..."

The Card Sequence broke.

Everything engraved upon this Demon Card vanished along with it, leaving behind only a pure blackness, waiting for whose brush might paint new marks upon it.

"If you hadn't thought about controlling me, about distorting me, I might have considered letting you live."

"A pity. There are no ifs."

"The greatest Train Conductor, huh?"

"Someone else blessed me like that before. I wonder how that guy is doing now."

"Never mind. Time to get down to business."

Ye Qiyan lightly licked his lips and turned his palm over.

The blank Demon Card, broken into two pieces, floated slowly above his palm.

[Damaged State]

[Perhaps... you could try injecting a bit of Spirit into it?]
