Transmigrated as a Ghost

Chapter 1189 - 1189 Escalating Battle

"You took everything from me. You stole my body, my life, and my little sister. You're nothing more than an imposter believing that you did something good when you're truly a monster."

The visage of Irene continued to hammer into some of the deep-rooted anxieties that Marcus rarely thought about and were buried deep in the corners of his mind.

He could not deny that some of the words coming from the shadowy echo were true.

In many ways, he had taken everything that was Irene. Her name was even in his status as a secondary identity, and he had received most of her memories.

Of course, he knew that he was not Irene. A fragment of her that had remained inside of her dead body had latched itself onto him.

Had this not occurred though, it was almost a certainty that Irene would have become a vengeful ghost that hunted down the illegal slavers that had killed her and kidnapped her sister.

Still, as much as Marcus wanted to just ignore this specter and swat her away the same as the others, he found himself hesitating to do so. And that was just what the Umbrashnul King was waiting for.

While Marcus had held up incredibly well to a unique skill that would normally devastate a person's mind, the last visage, which was always the most powerful, had managed to distract him.

"Cyclone Pierce."

The Umbrashnul King thrust with his spear, activating a powerful attack skill.

Marcus barely had any time to react, throwing up a mana barrier at the last moment.

This kept him from being impaled strait through the chest as he deflected the blow slightly off course, but the strike still carved out a large chunk of his left side.

The sudden pain helped to clear his mind from the mental attack he had been under, and he banished the specter of Irene.

He did not have time to be stuck in the past and question himself. Right now, he was locked in a life-or-death battle.

Already the Umbrashnul King had brought his spear back and was slashing it towards Marcus.

With its abnormally long blade, it would easily be able to slice him in half.

Though only if it hit.

Just before the blow connected with him, Marcus finally used the move he had been saving.

He went fully intangible and the weapon lacking any spiritual energy passed right though him harmlessly.

The Umbrashnul King's eyes went wide in shock as his attack met nothing.

Immediately he tried to merge with the shadow to quickly create some distance between himself and Marcus, but it was too late for him to get away.

"You shouldn't have done that." Marcus said, his voice laced with an immense fury.

'Apex Boost.'

'Eclipse Reaper.'

Activating the secondary power of one of his Supreme Skills, Marcus' already high stats were further increased by an additional thirty percent.

This sudden burst of power allowed him to catch up to his opponent before he could escape, and with all of the rage he was feeling, he channeled his energy into his scythe and struck with one of his most devastating attacks.

At the last second, the Umbrashnul King used some sort of powerful barrier ability, conjuring a sphere of muddy brown energy around him.

Yet, as powerful as the defensive skill was, it failed to stop Marcus' scythe from cleaving through it.

The blade of his weapon then dug deeply into the man's body, and a gout of shadowy essence erupted from the king's body as he was torn open.

'Quasar Blast.'

Marcus did not let up after landing one attack, and immediately chained his strike with a tier six light magic spell.

What looked like a giant pillar of white light slammed into the Umbrashnul King and seared through his body as he was launched towards the back of the chamber where the spell hit and erupted in a blinding explosion.

"Now to finish this. Last light."

More mana coalesced at the tip of his left index finger and soon became a single bead of blinding radiance.

With the single flick of his hand, he shot the overwhelming tier eight spell towards his already badly injured opponent.

Before the spell reached its destination though, the Umbrashnul King erupted in a burst of shadows far greater than anything he had so far displayed.

When Marcus' magic impacted against the shadows, the compressed bead of light erupted with intensity rivaling a star.

For a few moments, light and shadow fought against each other in an even match.

The stalemate did not last long however, and soon enough the power of Marcus' light magic pushed through and consumed his foe.

When the spell had finally run its course, he had expected to feel an influx of experience for beating such a high-level opponent, but the Umbrashnul King was still alive.

More distressingly, he was in perfect condition. All of the wounds Marcus had given him were gone, and he stood in a giant cater with his head held high and a glare directed towards Marcus.

"To think that you would push me this far. But your efforts are in vain. While your light magic may be able to hurt me, I have plenty of methods to prevent it from killing me. You are strong, I cannot deny that. Yet, you still will not be able to defeat me. Take your companions and leave now, and I will allow you all to go on with your lives. I do not desire to exhaust myself any further by fighting you, and there is no need for all of you to die."

The Umbrashnul King may have been acting like he was being magnanimous in letting Marcus go, but there was a hint of fear in his eyes.

While he had just used some sort of ability to heal himself and avoid taking the damage eh should have, Marcus figured that it was not something the man could use infinitely or without consequences.

No matter how strong a skill or racial ability might be, they all had their limits.

"I don't really think after getting you're a*s kicked is the right time to be bluffing that your superior. I'm wondering how many more times you can shrug off my attacks and what the cost of doing so is."

"Do not consider the mercy I am extending to you to be a sign of weakness!" The Umbrashnul King shouted. "At any moment I can defeat you. I'm simply trying to conserve my power to deal with the that detestable empress. But if you continue to push me, I will have no option but to put you in your place."

Marcus just shrugged in response to the Umbrashnul King's threat.

In the same motion, he let all of the enchantment spells he had cast fall away.

For what he was about to do, he would need every bit of mana he had.

'I've only tested it out once, and it's stupid hard to control. But, if I was able to get the unruly dark matter spell to cooperate, I'm sure that I can use this one as well.'

Power that almost made him feel like he was going to burst flowed through him as Marcus drew out more mana than he had ever used at once before.

It felt like eh was going to run himself dry, but before he did, he activated a charge of Ultimate Refresh.

This gave him just the boost that he needed to successfully cast the tier ten light magic spell.

"Celestial Corona."

Luminescence unlike anything before it appeared as the magic came into existence.

A scream rang out from the Umbrashnul King as he was bathed in the intense glow that all but wiped out the shadows around him. And this was not even the true power of the spell. For it was not an attack, but an enchantment.

"Impossible! What- what sort of magic is this?! There's no way someone at your level should be capable of this!"

"Ah, is this your first time seeing a tier ten spell. They are quite something aren't they. It almost feels like they exist in a different dimension compared to any other magic. Perhaps that's what they are." Marcus said as he casually began walking towards his target.

Behind him was a thick ring of light illuminating his body.

When one looked closely though, the light seemed almost solid, and there were symbols etched into it.

The amount of power coursing through Marcus was greater than anything he had ever felt, and he still had not accessed the full capabilities of his spell.

'It makes all my other enchantment spells seem paltry in comparison. Even when staking so many at once, it was only about half as powerful as this.'

Marcus was almost intoxicated by the power, but he quickly got his mind back into gear.

For as powerful as Celestial Corona was, it also was draining him.

Already he could feel his form cracking under the strain. He could not use it for long, or it would start to break him down.

"Hehe. Hahahahahaha!"

The Umbrashnul King suddenly erupted in manic laughter.

Marcus figured that it was the ravings of a man that realized that the end was near but could not accept it.

As the king of a powerful species, this was likely the first time he had ever encountered a truly overwhelming force. Even the Draayer Empress could not push him the way that Marcus was.

"I did warn you. This power was not meant to be used on you, but you've given me no choice."

Hearing this, Marcus braced himself for his adversary's last desperate move. But nothing he could have done would have prepared him for what happened next.

"Hand of Greed."
