"Mr. Hawthorne, what’s wrong with you guys?" Tang Xiaonan asked curiously.

’Are they all having trouble acclimating?’

Adrian Hawthorne yawned and replied with a wry smile, "I didn’t sleep well last night. I can’t sleep in unfamiliar beds."

The other three nodded.

In reality, they had spent last night taking cold baths until the middle of the night. They even got nosebleeds. They barely slept at all and only managed to shut their eyes for a little while right before dawn.

"Time to eat!"

Ellie Ashton came out carrying a pot of mung bean porridge and several side dishes: stir-fried eggs with green peppers, shredded pork with chopped pickled long beans, and pickled cucumbers. They were all delightfully refreshing. There were also some store-bought meat buns.

Jim Thorne perked up immediately. He had a few sips of porridge and ate a meat bun, feeling even more energized. He gave Ellie Ashton a thumbs-up. "Delicious!"

Ellie Ashton smiled and asked, "Do you guys want to go out? I’m planning to go take some pictures."

Patrick Thorne forced himself to rally. "I want to go. Let’s go together."

"I have some things to take care of, so I’ll pass." Adrian Hawthorne had no intention of just having fun. He wanted to walk around, hoping he might discover a business opportunity.

In the end, only Adrian Hawthorne stayed behind. Tang Xiaonan and the others went out together. Despite the glaring sun and the oppressive waves of heat, nothing could dampen their enthusiasm.

On their way out, they ran into Feng Ye. He was cooling off in the courtyard, wearing an undershirt and baggy shorts, with a pair of flip-flops on his feet. He was lounging on a traditional grandmaster chair, rocking back and forth. On a small tea table beside him sat a Zisha teapot. He looked as carefree as a landlord collecting rent, not at all like the notorious "Mad Boss" Feng of the underworld.

"Uncle, we’re heading out to play."

Tang Xiaonan went over to let Feng Ye know. He patted her on the head and shouted towards the house, "Will! Bring some money out!"

"Okay!"

A bruised and swollen Will ran out, clutching a handful of cash. They were all ten-yuan bills, at least a hundred yuan in total. Feng Ye jutted his chin towards Tang Xiaonan, and Will stuffed the money into her hands.

"Buy whatever you want to eat. Don’t pinch pennies," Feng Ye said extravagantly.

Tang Xiaonan stared at the huge wad of cash in her hands, her heart sinking a little. ’Giving a six-year-old girl several hundred yuan... isn’t he afraid she’ll be targeted by kidnappers?’

"One bill is enough."

Tang Xiaonan only took a single ten-yuan bill. This was the 1970s; ten yuan was more than enough for the few of them to eat very well. Besides, she didn’t want to spend Feng Ye’s money. Even though he was very good to her, she couldn’t take advantage of his kindness.

Feng Ye was displeased. He stuffed a few more bills into her hand before finally letting them leave.

Ellie Ashton was extremely curious about the relationship between Feng Ye and Tang Xiaonan. One was a little girl from a mountain village in Vessaria, the other was a formidable figure in Capria. They didn’t seem like relatives, yet he was exceptionally good to Tang Xiaonan. ’Could she be his illegitimate daughter?’

The more she thought about it, the more plausible it seemed. Ellie Ashton kept glancing at Tang Xiaonan, trying to find resemblances between her and Feng Ye, and she actually managed to find a few.

Feng Ye had double eyelids and a flat nose, and so did Tang Xiaonan. And big ears, too.

In less than half an hour, Ellie Ashton had concocted a whole tragic and bizarre backstory for Tang Xiaonan in her head. Before Feng Ye made his fortune, he and his lover had Tang Xiaonan. But because of social turmoil, the family of three was torn apart. By a twist of fate, Tang Xiaonan was adopted by the Thorne family in Vessaria. Now that Feng Ye was successful and famous, he had found his daughter, but out of gratitude for the Thorne family’s kindness in raising her, he hadn’t officially acknowledged her. The father and daughter could only see each other during school holidays...

If Tang Xiaonan knew about the melodramatic soap opera this girl was imagining, she would definitely give her five stars and recommend she join the world of fiction. It would be a waste of her talent not to write stories.

After they left, Feng Ye received a report from one of his men. "Boss, Mrs. Hawthorne is here. She says she wants to add another batch to her order."
