Some of the younger, unmarried colleagues blushed at Phoebe Thorne’s words. The married ones, however, were naturally unfazed, openly sizing up Allister and Brian Chapman.

Little Allister was fair, chubby, and utterly adorable. While there was a definite resemblance to Brian Chapman in his features, he actually took after Phoebe Thorne more. Allister was much more delicate-looking than his older brother, Gentry Chapman, yet you could tell at a glance he was Brian Chapman’s son. There was no mistaking it.

’Phoebe Thorne has a point. Why would he have a son with his wife if there were no feelings between them? There’s obviously an emotional foundation. Brian Chapman’s cousin-aunt was telling a blatant lie.’

"Brian Chapman, say it yourself. Is Allister your son or not?" Phoebe Thorne pressed, closing in on him.

"What is all this nonsense? I’ll give you the living expenses when we get home!"

Brian Chapman’s face turned the color of a beet. He was utterly mortified, and his hatred for Phoebe Thorne peaked. ’This woman has no regard for my reputation, so why should I care about our decade-plus relationship? I have to divorce her.’

"You’ll give it to me now! Your salary is forty-two, and you still owe me twenty-two! I don’t believe a word you say anymore. This is the written promise you signed! You wrote it twenty days ago, in front of my dad and my brothers. You swore up and down, making all sorts of fantastic promises, then turned around and forgot everything. Your words are just hot air! I’ll never believe you again!"

Phoebe Thorne then took out the written promise and handed it to the bureau chief. She had come fully prepared to cause a scene and wasn’t going to stop until she got the living expenses.

The bureau chief glanced over the written promise, and his expression soured. The situation was already quite clear. Brian Chapman was the one at fault. The woman might be a bit forceful, but Brian Chapman was the one who had wronged her first. As for whether he actually had a mistress, the bureau chief couldn’t be sure, and frankly, he didn’t want to find out.

When an employee had problems with their personal conduct, it reflected poorly on him as the bureau chief. He would certainly be criticized by his superiors.

"Brian Chapman, give your wife the living expenses. Now!" the bureau chief barked, his displeasure obvious.

’This Chapman fellow... I’ll just assign him some trivial tasks from now on. If a man can’t manage his own house, how can he be expected to manage the world? He can’t even pacify his own wife; he certainly can’t do his job well.’

Brian Chapman’s heart dropped, and a cold sweat broke out on his forehead. He knew that after this commotion, his future promotions were likely ruined. The bureau chief despised employees who couldn’t separate their public and private lives and brought their family drama to the workplace. ’That shrew, Phoebe Thorne. I have to divorce her!’

"Sir, I... I... I don’t have any money on me. I’ll give it to her when I get home."

Brian Chapman always stuttered when he was nervous. It wasn’t that he didn’t have the money—he had already given it to the young widow. He’d given her fifteen of the twenty-two, and he’d turned the remaining seven over to his parents. What did he have left to give Phoebe Thorne?

"You obviously gave the money to your mistress! Why would you leave it at home? Just the other day you were accusing me of stealing your money!" Phoebe Thorne sneered. She could figure it out with her eyes closed—the bastard had given the money to that widow.

"When did I ever say that? I’ll give you the money when we get back. Just take the child and go home!"

Brian Chapman’s eyes darted about, a clear sign of a guilty conscience. The more worldly-wise onlookers could see it at a glance, but they didn’t call him out. In their hearts, however, they were thoroughly disgusted. ’A spineless loser trying to keep a mistress. What a useless piece of trash!’

The bureau chief seemed to have figured it out as well, and his opinion of Brian Chapman sank even lower. Still, letting Phoebe Thorne continue this scene wasn’t an option; it was highly improper. He adopted a placating tone with her. "Don’t you worry. I’m going to have a talk with Brian Chapman. If he goes home and still doesn’t give you the living expenses, you come straight to me. I will discipline him!"

"Thank you, sir! You’re a savior to me and my two boys!"

Phoebe Thorne was moved to tears of gratitude, thanking him profusely. Then she turned to Brian Chapman and said, "Out of respect for the chief, I’ll trust you one more time!"
