Raina’s mind began to spin. In the past, Goldie Thorne had been a good-for-nothing. He had no proper job, shirked his work duties, and idled his days away. No decent girl would look twice at him, so his selection of potential brides was minuscule.

But things were different now. Good girls were practically lining up at their door. Raina was naturally pleased with herself, and her mind started scheming.

"Goldie, come over and take your pick. See anyone you like?"

One day, Raina laid a stack of photos out on the table for Goldie Thorne to look through himself. There were a good fifteen or sixteen of them. Goldie asked, confused, "I thought you already settled on someone? Why are there so many more?"

"Never mind that one for now. Hurry up and look at these girls. Which one do you fancy?"

Raina’s smile grew even more smug. Her son was a hot commodity now, so naturally, she had to put on some airs. Besides, she now felt the girl she previously thought was perfect in every way wasn’t all that great. ’She isn’t that pretty, a bit too thin, not quick with her chores, and her cheekbones are too high.’ A girl with a face like that would be ferocious. She wanted a capable daughter-in-law, not to bring home a tigress.

One tigress in the family was enough. If another one moved in, the whole house would be torn apart. After all, one mountain cannot accommodate two tigers.

Goldie Thorne rubbed his nose, a bit dazzled by the sight. He was used to being rejected at matchmaking meetings. This sudden V.I.P. treatment left him feeling genuinely overwhelmed; he couldn’t keep his cool.

The girls in the dozen or so photos were all quite pretty. You could tell they had all carefully done themselves up, sporting twin pigtails tied with red silk ribbons and wispy, styled bangs. Despite being black-and-white and only half-an-inch wide, they had the flair of professional portraits. Goldie was utterly dazzled. ’They all look so good,’ he thought. ’If only I could marry all of them.’

He wouldn’t dare say such a dangerous thing out loud, for fear his mother would kill him.

"Uncle, this one’s pretty,"

Jim Thorne said with a grin, picking out a photo. The girl in it had a face as round as a full moon, with thick eyebrows and large eyes. Her lips were a little full, her chin a bit round, and her hair was cut to shoulder length. Her expression was solemn, her lips pressed tightly together without a hint of a smile. Goldie lost interest after a single glance.

’He was looking for a wife, not another mother.’

"Go on, go on. Stop messing around."

Goldie shot him a look of annoyance. ’Looks like I’ll have to pick one myself.’ After agonizing over the choices and comparing them back and forth, he finally picked out the three he thought were the prettiest.

"These three. We can meet them and see how it goes."

Nancy Thorne leaned in for a closer look. All three girls had oval faces with willow-leaf brows and cherry-red lips. They looked similar at a glance, but there were differences upon closer inspection. One appeared poised and intellectual, another had a spirited air about her, and the third, the prettiest of them all, was shy and quiet, with captivatingly beautiful eyes.

"This one is at the same school as your second sister-in-law. She’s a substitute teacher, not yet a permanent employee. A high school graduate."

Raina personally favored the poised one. She was well-read and well-mannered, and her family was in a good position. In a few years, once her position became permanent, she’d be an official teacher with a stable income. She was the best catch of the lot.

"This one’s from Rosillia Village. She doesn’t have a job. She’s the eldest, and her mother passed away when she was little, so she raised her younger siblings herself. She’s a very capable girl."

Raina was pleased with this girl as well. Although she didn’t have a job, she was clearly capable. Life was hard for a motherless child, yet this girl had managed her household impeccably and raised her siblings to be very sensible. A good girl, indeed.

"What about this one?"

Goldie Thorne asked, pointing to the photo of the prettiest girl. He still liked her the best. Those eyes... they seemed to have a hook in them, one that tugged at his heart and sent a tingle through him.
