Transmigrated as the Villain Boss's Precious Darling
Chapter 647: Miserable Phoenix GoldingThe next day after breakfast, Felix Thorne, his wife, and Patrick Thorne prepared to head into town. Tang Xiaonan wanted to tag along to see the house, so in the end, the whole family went. Felix rode his bike with Tang Xiaonan, while Phoebe Huxley and her two sons walked.
Along the way, they ran into the postman, who was cycling toward them from a distance. This postman had been delivering mail for several years and knew all the villagers of Millstone Peak well, so he called out a greeting while still far off.
"Off to town?" the postman asked with a cheerful laugh, giving Tang Xiaonan a gentle pat on the head.
"Mhm, going to do some shopping."
Felix Thorne answered vaguely, pulling out a Peony brand cigarette and offering it to the man. He didn’t smoke himself but always kept a pack on him for social occasions. Peony cigarettes were a relatively high-end brand, costing fifty cents a pack—an expense most ordinary families couldn’t afford. The postman accepted it, looking both surprised and flattered, and tucked it behind his ear, unwilling to smoke it just yet.
"Well, we’ll let you get back to your route. We’ve got to get our shopping done."
After exchanging a few more pleasantries, Felix Thorne said his goodbyes. He pedaled slowly and unsteadily, waiting for Phoebe Huxley and the boys. Tang Xiaonan had refused to sit on the front rack because it hurt her butt, so she sat on the back instead, looking at the scenery all around. Suddenly, she spotted Jacqueline Spann, whom she hadn’t seen in a long time. Jacqueline walked over to the postman and spoke with him for a moment, but she quickly turned back empty-handed. From the look on her face, she was clearly disappointed.
Tang Xiaonan silently guessed at the reason. ’Jacqueline must not have received a letter from her aunt—or more accurately, the money she was waiting for. Phoenix Golding has lost her job and can’t earn work points anymore. After her release from the ancestral hall, she fell ill and hasn’t left the house since. The mother and daughter need money for everything, and Linden Golding’s family certainly won’t help them. Only Linden’s mother occasionally gives them a little something, but that barely makes a difference. If the money from Jacqueline’s aunt stops coming, she’ll have nothing left to live on.’
’Serves her right!’
’She’s reaping what she sowed.’
Tang Xiaonan felt not a shred of pity. ’No matter how miserably the two of them suffer, I will never feel sorry for them. In the book, the Thorne family’s tragic fate was directly their fault. If you ask me, they still aren’t miserable enough.’
Jacqueline walked back, looking dejected. Tang Xiaonan’s guess had been correct; she really was at the end of her rope. Her aunt hadn’t sent money for a month, and with Phoenix Golding to feed as well, the ten yuan from last time was long gone. If her aunt didn’t send money soon, she would start going hungry.
What worried her more was *why* her aunt hadn’t sent any money.
’Is she tired of me?’
’Bernice is my last lifeline,’ she thought, her anxiety mounting. ’I absolutely cannot lose this connection. I’ve sent three letters in a row, but there’s been no word from her at all. What if she moved? What if she’s grown to dislike me?’
There was no news from Vernon Spann, either, and she had no idea how he was getting along with their aunt. Jacqueline’s brow furrowed. ’I don’t even have the money to get to Tristone, or I’d go look for her myself.’
’I’ll wait one more month,’ she decided. ’If there’s still no word from my aunt, I’ll go to Tristone to find her. We still have a few chickens and a pig at home. Selling them should cover things for a while.’ Having made a plan, Jacqueline felt a bit more at ease and hurried home.
Lying in bed, Phoenix Golding’s face was sallow, and much of her hair had turned white. She looked old and gaunt, completely devoid of her former charm. She had been confined in the ancestral hall for a month, where she couldn’t eat or sleep properly. The air was damp, and she was constantly bitten by mosquitoes and insects.
Phoenix Golding had been through hell that month and had nearly died inside. She fell ill the moment she was released, and her condition fluctuated. With no money for nutritious food, her health only continued to decline.
Linden’s mother came over, an egg tucked in her pocket. She had secretly hidden it away and slow-cooked it in the embers of the stove. By now, she was the only person willing to help Phoenix Golding.
