Dayne Ascalar was sitting against the greenhouse wall.

Eyes open. Mouth ajar. Uniform stained with something dark that glowed faintly in the shadows.

Motionless.

"Dayne?"

My voice echoed in the surroundings. The cat kept meowing. It curled up next to the body.

Kneeling, I touched his neck. No pulse. His skin was cold.

The skin on his hands had a bluish tint. Fingers clenched, dug into the dirt as if he had tried to grip the ground.

In the middle of his chest was a deep wound surrounded by blood that had already dried into the fabric of his uniform.

Besides that wound, he bore no other visible signs of damage. Further perforations, bruises, or any other injury that could give me more clues were absent.

But upon touching his legs, something wrong became apparent. They felt deformed to the touch. Bones twisted. And when examining his chest more closely, I noticed it was somewhat caved in.

It was as if something enormously heavy had pressed him against the floor.

Crushed.

That was my conclusion. Dayne Ascalar, a classmate I had once swapped seats with in Wilda's class, a character as irrelevant in this web novel as the original Dariel Elcronne, had been crushed.

Trying to stand up, my legs had started to tremble. The bandage on my right hand was stained with dirt.

The cat meowed again. It curled up on the body's lap.

Looking around, the greenhouse was empty. The dirty glass walls were already starting to reflect the orange light of dusk.

The corpse appeared to have offered no resistance. Neither marks on the floor nor broken glass lay scattered around.

Just a crushed body against the wall and a white cat, its little paws stained with blood and mud, meowing endlessly while rubbing against him.

How was it possible to be crushed without being touched?

Lianza came to mind immediately. How her ice Empero could freeze and shatter steel. All from a distance. But nowhere was there a puddle of water to evidence ice. Although the environment was humid, the truth was the plants were dry and there was barely any moss on the walls.

A relieved sigh escaped me. Had Lianza been the killer, I would have taken the blame for her, or blamed someone else without hesitation.

Ardwyn and his crystal Empero came to mind next. Impossible for it to be him. Crystal left fragments, cuts, and would spread all over the surroundings; especially if it were Ardwyn's crystal, someone who used his Empero very crudely.

My conclusion was that I had very little evidence to find a culprit.

Only a somewhat caved-in chest, broken bones, dried blood, and a hole in the chest.

And with that, the culprit had to be found.

The hallways were already empty by the time I reached the east wing entrance.

The situation needed better thought. If I reported the body, they would interrogate me. What would I say? That I found the corpse while looking for a cat? That I have a Harem System that sent me on a mission that led me there?

Mentioning the System was far from an option. And lacking sufficient evidence to point out the culprit, all I could do was let the situation flow, letting the corpse's smell of death take care of the rest.

And pray no one had seen me enter the east wing garden...

Lady Canaria Ascalar was sitting in the dining hall, waiting for me. I handed her the cat, which wouldn't stop meowing.

Having cleaned the blood from its paws with water from a trough and dried it with spare bandages from my pocket, I presented it to her.

"Thank you so much, Elcronne!" she said. "Dayne had left me in charge of this little gentleman, but I had no idea how mischievous he was."

"Could you tell me why he asked you to look after it?" I asked. "Cats can get quite wild and insistent when they aren't fed."

"He didn't say specifically why, just asked me to do it for a day. I fed it just as Dayne explained. It's just... I don't know, Garchi seemed to miss him a lot, even though it had only been a day since he last saw him."

"I see... Well, Lady Canaria, I recommend you go to your quarters. Lately, the nights in Mayorka have grown more ominous."

[🎮 Mission completed! The cat is safe. 🐱]

Could you give me a clue?

[How about we trade your reward for a clue?]

Fine.

[You know the killer.]

That's the clue? I know many people in Mayorka. Especially those studying in my year... It's the most useless clue in the world.

[You asked for a clue. I gave you one. 😊]

Cursing, I realized it was my fault for thinking this System would help make things easier for me in this novel. Its rewards always carried the weight of a mission that did nothing but harm me.

Lianza always went to her quarters early, so I didn't have to worry about her.

Sitting there for a few seconds, I pondered the magnitude of what had just occurred.

In The Throne of Ashes and Thorns, the student who died was someone else, and it didn't happen this early in the plot. It happened much later.

Could Layda have been the culprit? After all, I couldn't learn the name of her Empero, and I didn't know exactly how it worked. My only information on the matter was that she had a conceptual Empero that allowed her to create lines that crossed things out. But that could perfectly be just one function.

Who else could it be? I needed to pay more attention during Duralianne's next class.

The secret lay in knowing the Emperos of all my classmates.

And what if it hadn't been a student?

Cursing again, I slumped.

The fact was that someone in Mayorka had killed a student.

And I was the only one who knew.
