Xuanheng seemed to see through Su Ming’s doubts, and spoke calmly to interrupt his thoughts.

“You needn’t worry,” Xuanheng said with deep eyes. “Although Elder Qingyang has a foul temper, he never takes advantage of juniors. He sealed his furnace for a century. That day, when you used the starlight stability principle to cut off the frantic fluctuations of the earth fire vein, you showed him something entirely different.”

Xuanheng paused slightly, a barely perceptible note of feeling entering his tone.

“He integrated your line of thinking into his fire-control system. This jade slip is both his lifelong summary on the path of fire control and his token of thanks for the insight you gave him. Accept it and rest easy.”

Su Ming’s heart brightened with understanding. He offered no affected refusal. With a simple movement of his right hand in the void, a gentle water-attribute spiritual energy lifted the pale green jade slip and settled it steadily into his palm.

“Disciple understands. Many thanks to Master for passing it along, and please convey my gratitude to Elder Qingyang on my behalf.” Su Ming carefully stored it in his storage pouch.

Xuanheng nodded slightly, his gaze falling to Su Ming’s chest.

“Now that the Heaven-Mending Pill has been refined, the next step—reforming your Dao foundation and breaking through to form a Core—will be the most perilous gate on your path to immortality,” Xuanheng’s voice turned serious. “When to take it and where to take it are for you to decide. The sect and Formation Peak will provide shelter.”

Su Ming met Xuanheng’s gaze and answered calmly, “My current body and meridians cannot yet withstand the shock of the Heaven-Mending Law. I wish to stabilize for a few more days and adjust my condition to true completeness before taking the pill.”

He turned and walked outward, the wide Dao robe slicing a deep blue arc through the morning breeze, and his figure soon merged into the thinning morning mist, disappearing completely.

Su Ming watched Xuanheng’s departing direction in silence. In this ruthless cultivation world, meeting a Master who asked no questions, offered protection, and acted with such measured restraint was an incredible fortune. A warm current rose involuntarily in his heart.

The stone gate slammed shut again.

A faint cyan sheen flashed, and Lin Yu’s soul body, impatient, drifted out of the Xuantian ring. After two days of recuperation, the edges of his soul body were no longer so blurred.

“Take it out and have a look,” Lin Yu’s voice carried obvious interest. “Elder Qingyang calls himself Cloud Hidden Sect’s number one pill fiend. I want to see what this century of closed-door tinkering has produced.”

Su Ming took out the pale green jade slip, pressed it to his forehead, and sent his divine sense into it.

The jade slip contained no long treatises—only countless three-dimensional meridian diagrams formed from crimson light. Those lines wove and rotated exquisitely in the void, simulating the subtle changes of flame in different environments.

Su Ming shared the information with Lin Yu.

After the time it takes for an incense stick to burn, master and disciple withdrew their divine-sense probes simultaneously.

Lin Yu’s soul body hovered midair, stroking his chin, silent for a long moment.

“Brilliant…” Lin Yu murmured, as if savoring a rare delicacy. “This old man is practically a genius. In this fire-control technique, he actually integrated your starlight stability concept perfectly. He divided the flame’s temperature with divine sense into tens of thousands of minute layers, each layer like a solid brick…”

A thoughtful light also flickered in Su Ming’s eyes. He immediately engaged his red-blue military replay thinking, placing himself into the confrontation against this fire-control system.

“Not only that,” Su Ming cut in, “look at the turning point in the seventh hand seal. If you view this fire-control method as an array, its defensive logic is flawless. It no longer forcibly suppresses external impact; rather, through extremely high-frequency internal micro-adjustments, it dissolves all impact into thousands upon thousands of pieces in an instant. This mirrors the principle of my Flexible Water Force-Dispersing Formation.”

Lin Yu nodded in appreciation.

“Study this jade slip well,” Lin Yu concluded. “Although it is a method for controlling fire, the great way has a common source. If you dismantle it and integrate it into your formation path, your micro-control over spiritual energy will certainly reach a higher tier. This gift was worth every bit.”

Su Ming put the jade slip away close to his body. His gaze again became calm as water.

“When my injuries reach seventy percent recovered, I will go out once,” Su Ming said softly.

Lin Yu’s drifting speed quickened slightly. “Where to? Right now you should be secluded, preparing to take the pill.”

Su Ming shook his head.

“I’ll go to the Repair Hall,” he said in a flat but logical tone. “That is the sect’s eye and treasury. After using so many auxiliary materials, I must show my face and soothe the people. At the same time, I need to know how the outside world is reacting to Elder Qingyang lighting his furnace.”

Lin Yu was silent for a breath. The sheen of his soul body brightened a little; he offered no objection. He knew his disciple would never put all his eggs in one basket.

Morning mist at Gazing Star Cliff never fully dissipated. Gray-white vapor, like a heavy curtain, isolated the secluded cave dwelling from the outside clamor.

Seven days later.

Su Ming sat cross-legged on the cold jade bed at the deepest part of the cave, slowly exhaling a breath of turbid air with faint gray impurities. During these seven days he had not stepped outside; living solely on fasting pills, he devoted every shred of spirit to the unceasing circulation of the Like Water Art.

The divine-sense trauma from the alchemy had finally calmed under the nurturing warmth of Xuanheng Zhenren’s green jade pendant. The scorch marks in his meridians, like dried riverbeds, were slowly soothed and nourished by faint cyan water-attribute spiritual energy, regaining their former resilience.

He opened his eyes; a restrained, deep gleam flashed in his pupils. His condition had reached its peak.

“Cheep.”

A very slight, metallic-tinged crisp chirp sounded in the corner of the stone chamber.

Su Ming turned his head. Shadow was crouched beside the nest woven from spirit herbs; the feathers once singed by the Pill Fiend’s residual waves had completely fallen away. The newly grown plumage was blacker than before, the surface even giving off a cold sheen like Mystic Iron.

More striking were its eyes. Within those defiant golden irises, a second, extremely fine golden ring had become clearly visible, like two miniature star trails slowly revolving at the eye’s depth.

Su Ming extended his right hand. Shadow streaked across half the chamber like a black lightning bolt and landed lightly on his shoulder. It nuzzled his chin with its hard beak in a remarkably affectionate manner, and a faint but pure sense of closeness flowed into Su Ming’s Consciousness Sea through their blood contract.

“You turned misfortune into fortune,” Su Ming said, raising a finger to gently smooth the feathers on its neck.

A cyan glow lit the air without warning.

Lin Yu’s soul body drifted out of the Xuantian ring and hovered three feet from Su Ming. After seven days of rest, his soul body’s sheen had fully stabilized; its outline was even a touch more solid than before the alchemical trial.
