Zaeryn returned the kiss without attempting to hurry her. When Ysmeine finally released his mouth, she remained close enough that her hand stayed against his cheek.

"You will be fine," she told him quietly.

"I know."

After Ysmeine, Zaeryn said farewell to the others as well.

When it was finished, he retrieved his luggage unit. The entire farewell had remained so familiar that it had prevented the morning from becoming as heavy as he had expected. Nobody had spoken as though he might never return, and nobody had demanded promises beyond a call when he arrived. They had kissed him, teased him and treated his return as something already decided.

That was easier to carry with him than fear.

"I will contact everyone once I reach the Capital," he said, looking at the four women together. "Individually, apparently."

"You had better," Aeris replied.

Ysmeine touched his arm one final time. "Go before Kayla comes back here and drags you out herself."

"Okay."

Zaeryn turned toward the entrance. The doors opened, revealing the pale light of early morning and the long-range cruiser waiting upon the estate’s transport pad.

He stepped outside, and the doors sealed behind him.

Kayla stood beside the open cruiser with the same flat impatience she had carried throughout the morning.

The Imperial Council had sent their own transport to collect him, and it was considerably larger than the cruiser Arya and Mireille used to drive him around the sector. Zaeryn took it in as he approached. The vehicle had been built for long-distance transit between sectors, with a dark metallic exterior and the silver crest of the Queendom displayed prominently upon its side.

"Finished?" she asked.

"I am outside, am I not?"

"Secure your luggage and get inside."

Zaeryn approached the cruiser without offering another response. A lower storage compartment opened when it detected the luggage unit, allowing him to place the case inside before the compartment sealed around it.

He climbed into the passenger cabin and stopped almost immediately.

Two Warladies he had never seen before were standing just inside, positioned on either side of the entrance. Both wore formal combat-ready uniforms marked with the silver Imperial crest, cut differently from the Sector Seven uniforms Zaeryn had grown accustomed to seeing, and the difference alone identified them as the security detail sent by the Council. One of them wore her hair cropped very short. The other had gathered hers into a high ponytail.

Both women turned toward him the moment he entered.

The Warlady with the short hair allowed her gaze to travel deliberately over his face and body, studying him for several seconds with what appeared to be nothing more than a standard security assessment. In the forward compartment, the pilot looked back over her shoulder as well, and although her reaction was more restrained, Zaeryn still caught the brief narrowing of her eyes as she took in the male who had somehow developed Warlady biology and learned to wield Vitae.

None of them showed any welcoming behaviour. Whatever surprise or curiosity they felt remained contained behind stern expressions and the disciplined stillness expected from Imperial Warladies.

"Zaeryn Noctis," the woman with the ponytail said, speaking his name as confirmation rather than a question. "Take your seat. We will depart as soon as your escort boards."

Kayla entered the cruiser a moment later, and the response from the two Imperial Warladies was immediate.

The short-haired woman drew herself even straighter, while the Warlady with the ponytail shifted fully into attention. Until that moment, both women had regarded Zaeryn with the guarded curiosity reserved for something unfamiliar and potentially dangerous, but the recognition they showed Kayla was entirely different. They knew precisely who she was, and their respect appeared instinctive rather than rehearsed.

"Warlady Noctis," the woman with the ponytail greeted her. "It is an honour to have you aboard."

Kayla acknowledged both women with a single nod, displaying no particular reaction to the reverence in their voices. She had probably received similar treatment from thousands of younger Warladies throughout her career, which explained why being recognized as one of the greatest living warriors in the Queendom appeared no more significant to her than being greeted by someone she already knew.

"I am not here on duty, and this remains your assignment," Kayla told them. "You may call me Kayla."

A brief hesitation passed through the two women. Neither appeared entirely comfortable addressing the legendary Void Scythe by her first name, particularly when Kayla herself required no uniform or insignia to establish her authority.

"Understood, Kayla," the short-haired Warlady answered.

Zaeryn watched the exchange without commenting. He had seen this reaction before from students, instructors and even Viora, but witnessing two fully trained Imperial Warladies straighten merely because Kayla had entered the cabin made her reputation considerably harder to dismiss.

To them, she was a Tier 1 Warlady who had survived battles that would have destroyed entire divisions. She was the woman featured in military recruitment campaigns, the living standard against which aspiring Warladies measured themselves and the Void Scythe whose arrival had once changed the outcome of an entire breach.

To Zaeryn, she was still the same unpleasant woman who had spent most of his life looking at him as though his existence constituted a personal offence.

Understanding why other people admired her did not require him to join them.

Kayla moved farther into the passenger cabin and selected a seat near the forward partition, arranging the lower portion of her structured coat before sitting down.

"If both of you are settled, we are ready to depart," the pilot informed them from the forward compartment.

The size of the Imperial cruiser gave Zaeryn several seating areas from which to choose, so he walked toward the opposite end of the cabin and selected one that placed a considerable distance between himself and Kayla. He lowered himself into it, and a transparent restraint field formed across his chest as soon as his back settled against the seat.

Kayla looked across the cabin and noticed the distance he had deliberately placed between them.

"I appreciate the consideration," she said.

"I chose this seat for my own benefit."

"Then we have both benefited from your decision."

The brief exchange between Zaeryn and Kayla produced the first visible crack in the discipline of the two Imperial Warladies.

The woman with the ponytail glanced across the considerable distance separating them before looking toward her short-haired companion. The other Warlady returned the glance for barely a second, but it was long enough to reveal their surprise.

They had known that Kayla Noctis would be accompanying him, and they had probably assumed that the legendary Void Scythe had been selected because the male anomaly belonged to her house and trusted her protection. Instead, Zaeryn had deliberately chosen the seat farthest away from her, while Kayla appeared equally pleased to have as much of the cruiser between them as possible.

Whatever relationship the two Warladies had expected to witness, open mutual dislike had clearly not been part of it.

The two Imperial Warladies moved away from the entrance and occupied separate seats near the middle of the cabin. The short-haired woman selected a position that gave her a clear view of Zaeryn, while her companion walked to the cockpit.

The door closed with a deep mechanical seal, cutting off the cold morning air and replacing it with the controlled silence of the passenger cabin. A low vibration passed through the floor as the cruiser’s lift systems gathered power beneath them.

Zaeryn turned toward the nearest window.

The estate remained visible beyond the tinted glass, surrounded by the faint illumination of the exterior lights and the pale colour of the approaching morning. He could still make out the broad entrance through which he had emerged, although the reflective surface prevented him from seeing whether Ysmeine and the others remained inside watching him.

The cruiser rose from the transport pad with enough smoothness that the movement only became noticeable when the ground began withdrawing beneath them. The estate gradually became smaller, followed by the surrounding residences and the familiar towers stretching across Sector Seven.

Zaeryn continued watching until the house disappeared behind the neighbouring structures.

The remainder of the journey passed with very little conversation.

Kayla occupied herself with her terminal and displayed no interest in speaking to him, while the two Imperial Warladies maintained the same disciplined silence they had carried into the cruiser. Even when their attention appeared to be elsewhere, Zaeryn remained aware that at least one of them always kept him within her field of vision.

He spent most of the journey looking through the window as the familiar landscape of Sector Seven gradually disappeared beneath them. Once the cruiser entered the high-altitude transit corridor, there was little left to see beyond layers of pale cloud and the occasional long-range vehicle travelling along a neighbouring route.

By late morning, the operator’s voice finally emerged from the forward compartment.

"We have entered Capital airspace. We will begin our descent shortly."

Zaeryn straightened slightly and looked through the window again. They were arriving, finally.
