Transmigration: I Made A Deal With A Man in Yellow
Chapter 105: A dark past [10]Liliane’s rapier tore through the air toward the left side of Elfriede’s chest.
At that speed, it looked like it was over. The rapier was already too close for Elfriede to dodge, and if it landed where Liliane intended, she would end up with a large hole where her heart was supposed to be.
However—
Instead of trying to dodge, Elfriede did something I hadn’t expected.
She leaned forward and lowered her body slightly.
Yes. Forward.
That might’ve been one of the dumbest things someone could do in a fight. Instead of moving away from the blade that was inches away from turning her chest into a donut like Rengoku, she willingly moved closer to it.
For a moment, I genuinely thought she had lost her mind.
But then I noticed exactly how she had positioned her body.
My eyes widened.
Wait...
Splatter!
Crimson blood sprayed across the floor.
The rapier pierced straight through Elfriede’s chest and burst out through her back with a gut-wrenching sound.
Her body jerked from the impact.
Blood immediately began running down the blade, dripping from its tip and splattering onto the wooden floor beneath them.
I stared silently and Liliane did too.
The cold expression she had worn throughout the fight slowly broke apart. Her red eyes trembled as she stared at the blade buried inside her older sister’s chest.
Then tears began falling down her cheeks.
"Sorry, Sister..." Her voice trembled. "I... I hope that was painless."
Elfriede remained standing with her head lowered.
She didn’t answer.
Liliane swallowed and tightened her grip around the rapier. She hesitated for a moment before finally deciding to pull the blade out of her sister’s body.
But just before she could—
A hand suddenly wrapped around her wrist.
Liliane froze.
"Huh?"
Her eyes slowly moved toward the hand gripping her.
"How are you still—"
Elfriede raised her head.
Her amethyst eyes stared directly into Liliane’s red ones.
There was no fear in them anymore.
"I’m not dead yet."
Liliane’s eyes widened.
"What...?"
For the first time since becoming possessed, I saw something resembling fear appear on her face.
"How is that possible?!" Liliane shouted. "I clearly stabbed through your chest!"
She looked down.
The rapier was still buried through the left side of Elfriede’s chest. Blood continued pouring from the wound, staining her clothes and running down the silver blade.
There was no doubt that the attack had landed.
Yet Elfriede was still standing.
Blood trickled from the corner of her mouth.
"You stabbed through my chest..." she said weakly. "But you missed my heart."
Liliane stared at her in disbelief.
"What?"
"I shifted it."
My eyes widened.
She did what?
"I moved my heart just before your rapier pierced me," Elfriede explained. "Only enough for your blade to miss it."
Liliane’s expression completely changed.
Her hand began trembling beneath Elfriede’s grip.
"T-That’s impossible!"
She tried to pull her arm away, but Elfriede refused to release her.
"That’s something only Awakened people should be capable of! You’re still unawakened!" Liliane shouted. "How the hell do you know how to do something like that?!"
Elfriede smiled.
Blood stained her teeth.
Then, with a trembling hand, she slowly pulled down the collar of her shirt, revealing the pale skin beneath.
Liliane froze.
So did I.
There were scars.
Dozens of them.
Small stab wounds covered the left side of Elfriede’s chest, some faint and old while others were much more noticeable.
I stared at them in disbelief.
Don’t tell me...
"I’ve been practicing," Elfriede said.
Liliane slowly looked back at her face.
"For the past few years, I’ve been practicing on myself."
"You..."
"It hurt a lot." Elfriede’s smile weakened. "But I knew that if I ever had to fight one of those monsters before I Awakened, something like this might save my life."
She glanced down at the rapier still buried through her chest.
"I just never expected..."
Her voice became quieter.
"...that you would be the one to force me to use it."
Sadness flashed through her amethyst eyes.
"And that hurts far more than your blade inside my chest."
Liliane’s eyes shook.
The dark red aura surrounding her body flickered.
"You... you..." Her lips trembled. "You’re a monster."
Another tear rolled down her cheek.
"How could you do something like that to yourself? Again and again... and never tell any of us?"
Elfriede’s expression softened.
Despite the blood running down her chin, despite the rapier still piercing through her chest, she gave Liliane the same warm smile she had always given her.
"I’m your big sister, after all."
Liliane’s lips parted.
"I don’t need to burden you or Yuria with my pain," Elfriede continued softly. "If hurting myself means I can become strong enough to protect the two of you, then I’ll endure it."
Her grip around Liliane’s wrist loosened slightly.
"That’s my way of showing you my love."
"Ah..."
Liliane’s breathing became uneven.
"Ah... ah..."
The tears she had been trying to hold back finally broke through.
Her shoulders began trembling as she looked down at the rapier buried inside her sister.
"What..."
Her voice cracked.
"What have I done...?"
The tears came all at once.
Liliane broke down, crying uncontrollably as the dark red energy surrounding her body began to waver.
Liliane let go of her rapier which was stuck on Elfriede’s chest, and Elfriede’s hand let her arm go.
Liliane took steps back and then looked behind her where the corpse of Sena was slumped against the wall. And then she looked at her bloody hands.
"I-I have done all of this...all I wanted was to protect my sisters..wah...wah."
She fell onto her knees and started crying. Her eyes that were red started to change back to amethyst.
Elfriede also fell onto her knees, her pajama was slowly staining with blood and after a few moments, a puddle of blood circled below her.
Ah, it seems like she regained control of herself after seeing Elfriede’s scars.
It was very difficult to remove someone under the effects of demonic energy. One had to either be able to break through with holy/light energy or convince the possessed to stop.
That’s what Elfriede.
And hell, she was a monster.
What she did was nothing but simply almost impossible.
She shifted her heart to avoid it being destroyed. Do you know how much control one has to have of her body in order to do that?
Awakeners and other races could do that by instinct except for humans.
The fact that she had stabbed herself countless times in order to try and learn how to do showed how committed and how much sheer fucking will she had.
I don’t think that I could even do that at her age.
The people from the past era were really a different breed.
However, despite all that Elfriede had told Liliane, the demon will not be repelled like that.
After all, she had already sold her soul.
Liliane’s red eyes slowly began changing back to their original amethyst.
For a moment, it seemed like she was returning to normal.
But then the change suddenly stopped.
Her eyes turned red again.
Only this time, something was different.
Those red eyes felt far more menacing than before.
As if someone had flipped a switch, Liliane’s tears stopped completely. The broken expression on her face vanished, replaced by coldness and slight annoyance.
Then she spoke.
"Humans and their emotions. And here I was, trying to empower myself by consuming the hearts of these orphanage children."
A deep voice came from Liliane’s lips.
That wasn’t her voice.
Liliane—or rather, whatever was possessing her—straightened her body and casually cracked her neck from side to side.
Crack. Crack.
The temperature inside the room dropped.
It had already been cold because of the night, but this was different. The air itself became heavy as demonic energy poured out of Liliane’s body.
I frowned.
So this was the bastard behind everything.
The demon stared down at Elfriede, who was still kneeling on the floor. Her body trembled under the pressure of the demonic energy being released from her sister.
It was much denser than before.
Much more suffocating.
And this wasn’t even Liliane’s power anymore.
This was his.
The demon clasped his hands behind his back and calmly walked toward Elfriede. Each step was slow and unhurried, as though the bleeding girl in front of him wasn’t even worth being cautious around.
He stopped directly in front of her and looked down.
"I spent quite some time breaking this child’s mind so that I could control her completely."
A hint of amusement entered his deep voice.
"Yet you managed to weaken my control in only a few seconds. How interesting."
Elfriede said nothing.
The demon studied her for a moment before tilting his head.
"Perhaps I chose the wrong sister."
Elfriede’s eyes narrowed.
"Would you like to become my host instead?" the demon asked. "You seem far more promising than this child. I can give you all the strength you desire."
Elfriede was becoming paler by the second.
She had already lost a lot of blood from the wound in her chest, and her breathing was becoming weaker. Yet despite her condition, she slowly raised her head and stared into the demon’s red eyes with nothing but hatred.
"Get out of my sister’s body!"
The demon remained silent.
Then his lips stretched into a smile, revealing Liliane’s sharp teeth.
"What a shame."
He raised one hand.
"Then I’ll simply kill you."
The smile remained.
"I never ask twice."
His arm blurred.
The hand shot toward Elfriede’s neck with enough force to tear her head from her shoulders.
My heart sank.
Shit.
He’s going to kill her.
But just before the demon’s hand could reach her—
BOOM!
Blue energy exploded from Elfriede’s body.
"What the—?!"
I raised my arm instinctively as the entire room was swallowed by blue light.
The floor beneath Elfriede cracked.
The remaining furniture was thrown against the walls, and the demon was forced backward as the energy continued pouring out of her body.
My eyes widened.
Ah...she has awakened.
