Our journey — well, mostly my own journey, because Ezio just latched onto my shadow — was nothing but perilous.

I killed many deadly monsters that wanted nothing but to devour me alive. I couldn’t even fight some of them because they were in groups, so I did what a man in that situation could best do — run for my dear life.

There’s nothing shameful about running away for your survival.

The Grey Fog was vast, I had never expected it to be so big. Thankfully I didn’t come across another swamp of crocodiles again.

Different types of monsters lurked in it — some had human-like bodies while their heads elongated like a snake, and I had almost gotten my guts ripped out by them.

Honestly, what was I thinking when creating such uncanny creatures?

Surely my parents would want me to see a psychologist if they saw what type of monsters my head had created.

So this is a good reminder of why it’s a great thing that no one can read minds, because if people could, a lot of mentally ill people would be found.

Not saying that I’m mentally ill.

Surprisingly, I had also encountered some shadow-related monsters, which were rare, giving me some story fragments.

As I got deeper into the fog, the stronger the monsters became, and they were now putting up a fight against me — I couldn’t one-shot them anymore like before.

But it was fine by me, I needed battle experience anyway.

The remaining days were finally over and I was nearing the end of Section 2. It had taken about two weeks to get here, which hadn’t been easy given how many obstacles I’d faced on the way.

I was currently walking through ancient ruins — the remains of a civilization that had disappeared long ago. Time and countless disasters had reduced the once-great human structures to broken shells.

Many buildings had roofs that had caved in, leaving them open to the grey sky. Thick vines climbed over cracked stone walls, while moss covered the old bricks. A cool wind drifted through the empty streets, carrying the smell of damp soil, old stone, and dust.

"Is this where we’re supposed to find the monster you’re looking for?" Ezio glanced around. "Because, as far as I can see, there’s no monster in sight."

I cut through the tall grass in front of me.

"Relax," I said. "You’ll see soon enough."

Of course he couldn’t see the monster.

It was in another dimension.

I turned a corner and stopped in front of a large stone building. Two massive wooden doors stood at the entrance, their surfaces cracked with age and covered in patches of moss. I placed both hands against them and pushed.

The doors slowly swung open with a long, heavy creak, as if they hadn’t been opened for hundreds of years.

The inside was much larger than it looked from the outside. Dirt and moss had spread across the floor and walls. Rows of wooden benches stood on either side, most of them rotten or collapsed after years of decay. Parts of the ceiling had fallen away, allowing pale light to shine through the gaps and illuminate the dust floating in the air.

In the center of the building lay the remains of a huge chandelier. Its iron frame was twisted with rust, and broken chains still hung from the ceiling above, showing where it had once been suspended.

The entire place was silent.

Only the sound of the wind slipping through the broken roof and the creaking of old wood could be heard.

This place was an old church, an ancient church that worshipped the God of Stories.

I walked silently, jumped over the chandelier and walked up to the stone altar, now broken.

I stood over it and started searching for what I was looking for.

’What are you looking for?’

"A path." I said as I walked back and forth.

’A path? People have explored this place before and didn’t find anything.’

That’s because they didn’t look hard enough.

"If I remember correctly, it should be somewhere...here." I came to a stop and pressed my boot at the spot where I thought the path would be.

"Ezio, you’re very strong, right?" I asked.

’Yeah, why?’

"Can you strike this spot as hard as you can?"

’Uh, sure.’

Ezio came out of my shadow and stood right above the spot I had pointed at.

I took a few steps back — actually, more steps, so I didn’t get caught up in anything unpleasant.

Ezio pulled back his fist and was about to strike the ground, but I stopped him.

"Oh, and make sure to use your shadow energy."

"Why?" Ezio raised an eyebrow.

"Just do it."

Ezio nodded and gathered shadow energy in his fist, then struck the altar with a devastating punch that shook the building, however, suddenly a blue-like energy released from the ground and repelled Ezio’s fist back.

"What the hell? A protective barrier?" Ezio muttered in surprise.

As expected, there was still a barrier, so that meant I wasn’t too late.

"Come on, you said you’re strong but couldn’t break through such a mere barrier." I clicked my tongue. "Seems like you’re weaker than I thought."

"Huh, who are you calling weak??" Ezio sounded offended. "I’ll show you."

Ezio raised his fist once again, and this time a violent amount of shadow energy gathered in it. His fist came down and connected with the altar’s ground again, triggering the protective barrier once more, but this time the blue barrier wasn’t able to repel his fist and broke apart into chunks of blue energy.

The ground then shook, and dust and debris flew into the air.

I covered my eyes to protect myself from the dust, and once it settled, a huge hole had opened in the altar.

I walked up to the altar and looked down — there was a dark underground path.

"There was actually a path, how didn’t I detect it before?" Ezio said, confused.

"Very strong concealment magic, that’s why." I patted his shoulder. "Good job."

The hole wasn’t too deep, so I jumped down and landed on the ground, Ezio following afterward.

We walked along the narrow path for a couple of minutes and, not long after, arrived at the end of the tunnel, which opened up into a very small cave.

In that cave, there were three old tombstones aligned in a straight line.

"Graves...are these perhaps tombstones from the last civilization?" Ezio asked as he looked closer.

"You’re right. These are the tombstones of three important people from a long time ago." I answered.

On the wall behind the tombstones, there was some writing carved into it, saying:

"Here lie those who searched for the Flame..."

I walked to the tombstones and knelt on both knees, and grabbed some things I had asked Ezio to buy for me.

"What are you doing?" Ezio asked as he stood beside me.

"A ritual." I said as I laid out the items.

Three verbena flowers, a monster’s dried scales, a little bit of salt, a candle and a hand-sized pestle with a mortar.

I put the verbena flowers inside the mortar and started crushing them with the pestle, then added the dried scales and salt. After crushing them and mixing them all together, I set the candle down and lit it with a match.

Then I spread the mix on the floor next to the tombstones. A dagger made of darkness formed in my hand, and with it I sliced my wrist and let the blood drip onto the mix.

"Do you know what you’re actually doing, or have you just gone insane?" Ezio said, with a disapproving tone.

I understood what he meant, because from his point of view I probably looked like some cultist trying to make a sacrifice.

"Listen, whatever happens to me, don’t touch me, no matter what." I said.

Ezio didn’t reply, and just nodded.

Once I deemed it was enough blood, I stopped the wound, clasped my hands together and brought them to my chest, saying a prayer.

"O warriors, whose weary feet did tread the path unto the Flame, that the world might endure... grant ear unto my prayer. For I, no less than thee, am a seeker of that sacred fire."

The cave was silent after I said the prayer and nothing happened.

But then, suddenly, the blazing red light of the candle changed from golden-red to light blue.

Multiple whispers, coming from one place but at the same time from all places, filled my ears with different voices. They spoke in a language I couldn’t understand.

But that meant the prayer had worked.

The voices stopped talking, and with that, my vision went dark.
