Liliane suddenly stepped inside the blonde girl’s range and thrust her rapier toward her stomach.

It was a good attack.

Unfortunately, she hesitated.

Only for a fraction of a second, but that was enough.

The blonde girl’s longsword came down and knocked the rapier aside. She immediately spun on her heel and threw a roundhouse kick toward Liliane’s head.

Liliane’s eyes widened, and she barely managed to cross both arms in front of herself.

Thwack!

The kick slammed against her guard and sent her skidding backward several steps.

Before Liliane could regain her balance, the blonde girl was already on top of her.

Clang! Clang! Clang!

A barrage of sword strikes forced Liliane backward.

"She’s getting pushed back again," Froyers muttered from nearby.

I glanced to the side.

I wasn’t the only one watching the fight. Several other children had gathered around the training ground, including Froyers, Arkens, Yuria, and Elfriede.

Froyers looked especially irritated.

I turned my attention back to the fight.

Every time the blonde girl attempted to land a finishing blow, Liliane somehow slipped away. She would duck beneath an attack, redirect another with her rapier, or retreat just far enough to avoid being struck.

She wasn’t weak.

That was becoming obvious.

The problem was that she was scared.

Throughout the fight, Liliane had several opportunities to counterattack. There were moments when the blonde girl’s side was completely exposed, and others where Liliane could have easily stabbed her leg or shoulder.

But every single time...

She hesitated.

"Come on," I muttered. "Attack her."

She didn’t.

And eventually, that hesitation cost her.

The blonde girl knocked Liliane’s rapier aside before grabbing her arm and pulling her forward. Her other hand clenched into a fist and slammed directly into Liliane’s stomach.

Thwack!

"Gah!"

Liliane folded around the punch before being thrown aside. She hit the dirt and rolled several times before finally stopping.

"I told you years ago that you should’ve quit," the blonde girl said as she rushed after her.

Liliane forced herself back onto her feet and raised her rapier with trembling hands.

The blonde girl attacked.

Clang! Clang!

Liliane blocked the first two strikes.

Then the third.

Then the fourth.

But her arms were shaking more with every impact.

The blonde girl didn’t stop.

Cuts slowly began appearing across Liliane’s body whenever her defense failed. One appeared on her shoulder, another across her thigh, followed by a shallow cut along her cheek.

Blood stained her clothes.

Eventually, Liliane fell onto her knees.

Her entire body was covered in cuts and bruises, and tears streamed down her face as she struggled to keep hold of her rapier.

The blonde girl stood over her.

"Tsk. Such a crybaby." Her expression twisted with anger. "Do you really think you’ll survive against those things if you keep crying like this?!"

Froyers stepped forward.

"That’s it. I’m done watching this—"

Arkens grabbed his shoulder before he could interfere.

"Not yet."

Froyers turned toward him with a furious expression. His teeth clenched so tightly that the muscles along his jaw became visible, but after a moment, he reluctantly stopped.

The blonde girl continued glaring down at Liliane.

"We’re all here training so we can fight those malevolent creatures and protect our people. Everyone here understands that." She tightened her grip around her sword. "And yet you’re still sitting there crying like a pussy."

She kicked Liliane directly in the face.

Thwack!

Liliane’s lip split from the impact, and blood sprayed from her mouth as she rolled across the dirt. She eventually stopped on her stomach with her back facing the blonde girl.

Okay.

That was definitely enough.

The blonde girl walked toward her and raised her sword.

"At this point, I might as well end your life now. At least then you won’t get torn apart and devoured by those creatures later." Her expression remained cold as she positioned the blade over Liliane’s back. "You should thank me."

What the hell?

This wasn’t training anymore.

She brought the sword down.

But before the blade could pierce Liliane’s back, someone appeared beside her.

A fist slammed into the blonde girl’s face.

BANG!

Her body was thrown several meters across the training ground. She hit the dirt, rolled several times, and finally came to a stop.

She didn’t get back up.

I stared at the person who had punched her.

Elfriede.

Goddamn.

Was she already this strong when she was younger?

And mind you, she wasn’t even Awakened yet.

Elfriede stood between the unconscious girl and Liliane. Her fist remained clenched at her side, and the usual kindness I had seen on her face was completely gone.

"If you ever threaten my sister’s life again," she said coldly, "I’ll end yours myself."

For a moment, she looked frighteningly similar to the Sister Friede I knew.

Then Elfriede turned around.

The coldness disappeared instantly.

Her eyes widened when she saw Liliane lying on the ground, and she immediately rushed toward her.

"Lily!"

Elfriede dropped onto her knees beside her and carefully helped her up.

"I’m so sorry." Tears gathered in her eyes. "I should’ve stepped in sooner. Are you alright?"

Froyers, Arkens, and Yuria quickly joined them. Froyers looked furious as he glanced toward the unconscious blonde girl, while Arkens helped Elfriede support Liliane. Yuria remained mostly silent, but even her normally emotionless face showed concern for her sister.

Together, they began taking Liliane away from the training ground.

But just before they left...

I noticed something.

Liliane turned her head.

Her tear-filled eyes settled on the unconscious blonde girl lying in the dirt.

There was something in that gaze that hadn’t been there before.

Hatred.

Deep, bitter hatred.

Then I saw it.

A faint strand of dark energy clung to Liliane’s body.

My expression immediately changed.

I knew what that was.

"Ahh... this is bad."

The others couldn’t see it. They continued helping Liliane away, completely unaware of the darkness slowly wrapping itself around her.

But I could.

And if that energy was what I thought it was, then the blonde girl was the least of Liliane’s problems.

A demon was lurking somewhere in this place.
