Chapter 268: Chapter Two Hundred And Sixty Seven

Her innocent face turned back into a mask of ice. The friendly noble lady vanished, and the Black Widow returned to demand answers.

Camilla nodded her head slowly.

"That’s right," Camilla agreed softly, her voice dropping into a low, freezing whisper. "You wouldn’t dare."

She leaned slightly forward on her velvet seat. She glared into their terrified eyes.

"Who sent you?" Camilla asked. The question was simple, but it carried a deadly demand.

The two thugs swallowed hard. Their throats were dry. They did not hesitate to spill the entire truth. They knew lying to her meant instant, painful death.

"A hooded man approached us!" the first thug answered rapidly, speaking as fast as his shaking lips would allow. "He found us in the lower city slums last night!"

"He gave us a letter and a heavy bag of gold coins!" the second thug added quickly, pointing a shaking finger toward his own pocket. "He told us to wait on this specific road for this specific carriage!"

They both looked down at the dirt, terrified of her cold gaze.

"We don’t know who is behind it, my lady!" the first thug swore honestly. "We truly don’t know his real name! His face was covered by a dark hood! We are just hired hands!"

Camilla sat back against the velvet cushions.

She processed the information quickly. A hooded man. A letter. Gold coins.

"Someone else is the mastermind," Camilla thought to herself, her sharp mind connecting the puzzle pieces perfectly. " Someone that has enough power is pulling the strings because these idiots wouldn’t dare to attack a well known member of the Benson family."

"If I just kill these useless thugs right now," Camilla reasoned internally, "I will never find out who is truly behind this assassination attempt. The mastermind will just hire more thugs tomorrow. I need to cut the poisonous weed directly from its root."

A bold brilliant plan formed instantly in her mind.

"The best way to catch the culprit," Camilla decided silently, a dark, calculating light shining in her eyes, "is to play their game perfectly. I must be kidnapped. I must let them take me directly to the drop-off location. Then, I will see exactly who is waiting there to kill me."

Camilla looked down at the two kneeling, terrified men.

She clapped her small hands together once.

"Beautiful. Okay then," Camilla said cheerfully. Her voice returned to a smooth, pleasant tone. "Let’s go."

The two thugs stopped shaking for a second. They blinked their eyes rapidly. They looked up at her in confusion.

They thought she was going to execute them on the spot. They did not understand her words.

"My lady?" the first thug asked weakly, completely bewildered.

Camilla gestured with her hand, waving her fingers warmly toward the empty space on the velvet seats inside the carriage.

"Come in, come in," Camilla invited them politely, acting exactly like a friendly host welcoming guests into her home. "Let’s go."

The two thugs stared at her. They looked at the soft velvet seats. They looked at her calm face. They were paralyzed by her bizarre, unpredictable behavior.

They did not move a single inch. They were too afraid to step inside a small, enclosed box with a deadly demon.

Camilla saw their hesitation. Her polite smile vanished.

Her eyes darkened into an expression of menace. She glared at them with a look so cold it froze their blood.

"Come in, now," Camilla commanded. Her voice was no longer a polite invitation. It was an order.

The two thugs scrambled instantly. They did not dare to disobey her command.

They jumped up from the dirt. They practically threw themselves inside the carriage. They scrambled onto the opposite velvet seat, pressing their large bodies as tightly against the back wall as possible. They pulled their knees together, trying to make themselves look as small and harmless as they could. They stared at the floor, sweating profusely.

Camilla nodded her head in satisfaction. She looked out the open carriage door.

Lying on the dirt road, just a few feet away, was her real driver, Hugo.

Hugo was lying on his side. His face was badly bruised, and he was missing his black uniform coat and hat.

Camilla knew that if she just disappeared, Damon would search the entire city. But she wanted to leave a clear trail. She wanted to make sure Damon’s guards could find the location if things went wrong.

Camilla looked back at the two terrified thugs sitting across from her.

"Tell my driver where you will be taking it to," Camilla instructed them smoothly. She pointed her finger at the unconscious Thomas lying on the dirt.

The thugs looked at each other in pure shock.

"My lady..." the first thug stammered weakly. "He is injured... and the fake driver is up there..."

"I don’t care," Camilla interrupted him coldly. Her dark eyes flashed with danger. "Lean out that door and speak the location loudly enough for my driver to hear. Do it now."

The thugs scrambled to obey her crazy order.

The first thug leaned his upper body out of the open carriage door. He looked down at Hugo, who was groaning softly on the ground.

"Hey, old man!" the thug shouted loudly, his voice shaking nervously as he looked back at Camilla for approval. "We are taking her to the abandoned warehouse near the old docks! The one by the rotting pier! Tell your boss!"

The thug quickly pulled his body back inside the carriage, sitting down heavily on the velvet seat.

"Is that good, my lady?" the thug asked softly, wiping sweat from his forehead.

Camilla nodded her head calmly.

"Very good," Camilla replied softly.

She reached out and grabbed the handle. She pulled the carriage door shut.

Click.

The two thugs sat frozen on their seat. They looked up at the ceiling of the carriage.

"Drive to the location!" the second thug shouted nervously to his partner sitting on the driver’s box outside.

The fake driver cracked the leather whip.

Snap!

The horses neighed loudly. The wheels began to roll again. The carriage moved away from the quiet dirt road, leaving the bruised Hugo behind on the ground.

Inside the moving carriage, the atmosphere was absurd.

Camilla leaned back against her comfortable velvet cushions. She smoothed the skirt of her dress. She looked incredibly relaxed, as if she were taking a pleasant afternoon joy ride with two grateful companions.

Across from her, the two scarred thugs sat huddled together. They held their hands tightly in their laps. They did not speak. They did not move. They stared at the floor, terrified of the beautiful woman sitting in front of them.

Camilla looked out the small glass window. She watched the dirty buildings of the lower city approaching.

"I wonder who is waiting for me," Camilla thought to herself. A cold, dangerous smile returned to her lips. She was ready to meet her killer.
