Chapter 271: Chapter Two Hundred And Seventy

The carriage rolled quickly down the bumpy, uneven dirt roads leading to the lower city. The wheels made a loud, constant grinding sound.

Inside the dark carriage, the atmosphere was absurd. It did not feel like a kidnapping at all.

Camilla sat very comfortably on the soft velvet seat. She smoothed down the front of her dress. She leaned her back against the cushions, looking relaxed.

Sitting across from her were the two large, scarred thugs.

The two massive men were pressed tightly together on the opposite velvet seat. They kept their knees squeezed closely together. Their hands were resting stiffly on their laps. Drops of cold sweat were rolling down their scarred faces. They stared blankly at the floor of the carriage, refusing to make eye contact with her. They were breathing very heavily, paralyzed by fear of what she might do.

Camilla watched them. An amused smile formed on her pink lips.

She thought to herself, her internal voice full of laughter.

"Look at these two," Camilla thought, shaking her head slightly in her mind. "They are supposed to be my kidnappers. They are supposed to be holding me hostage. But they look like two frightened little mice trapped in a tiny box with a hungry cat."

She decided to break the awkward silence. She wanted to tease them.

Camilla spoke out loud. Her voice was soft, smooth, and casual, like she was talking to friends.

"Nervous?" Camilla asked them.

The two thugs flinched violently. Their broad shoulders jumped up to their ears. They kept their heads bowed low. They did not speak a single word. There was no response. They just swallowed hard, their throats bobbing nervously.

Camilla let out a quiet, gentle sigh. She relaxed even further into the velvet seat and crossed her legs elegantly at the ankles.

"I understand," Camilla said softly, nodding her head in polite sympathy. "It is my very first time being kidnapped, so I don’t really know what to do either."

She tilted her head to the side, looking at them with wide, innocent eyes. She put a finger to her chin, pretending to think very deeply about the proper rules of a hostage situation.

"Should I scream?" Camilla asked them calmly, her voice dripping with innocent curiosity. "Or should I shiver? I can practice a scream right now if it makes you feel more professional."

Ahem.

She cleared her throat, "Ah. Oh no. Please help me."

She said the words flatly, without a single drop of emotion.

The two thugs panicked instantly. The thought of this terrifying demon screaming and pretending to be a victim was horrifying to them.

They both raised their hands immediately. They waved their hands rapidly in the air, shaking their heads from side to side in panic.

"No, no, my lady!" they chorused together. Their rough voices were high-pitched and shaking wildly. "It isn’t necessary! Please do not scream! It is absolutely not necessary!"

Camilla smiled. She lowered her hand from her chin.

"Okay then," Camilla nodded her head gently, accepting their answer.

She leaned slightly forward on her velvet seat. She looked at their sweating faces. The playful, innocent smile vanished entirely from her face.

"But why are you two trembling?" Camilla asked. Her voice dropped into a low, freezing whisper that sent terror straight down their spines.

She narrowed her eyes, staring into their panicked souls.

"I am sure this isn’t your first time," Camilla stated coldly, delivering a very sharp reminder. "After all, you have kidnapped my brother before."

The two thugs stopped breathing. Their hearts stopped beating in their chests.

They remembered the terrible night at the Old Man’s Rye Tavern. They remembered beating Lord Zade. But most importantly, they remembered the bloody massacre that had followed when this exact woman showed up to rescue him.

The small space inside the carriage suddenly felt tight and suffocating.

The two huge men could not sit on the velvet seat anymore. Their legs gave out from terror.

They slid off the velvet cushion immediately. They dropped heavily onto their knees right on the floor of the moving carriage. Because the space between the seats was very narrow, they were forced to squeeze tightly together, bumping their shoulders against each other as they knelt in the dirt from their own boots.

They pressed their hands together, bowing their heads repeatedly.

"Please spare me!" the first thug cried out loudly, his voice cracking with fear. Tears of genuine terror began to form in his eyes.

"Please spare me, my lady!" the second thug echoed frantically, shaking like a leaf in a winter storm. "We were foolish! We swear we will never do it again!"

Camilla looked down at the two giant men kneeling at her feet. She found the situation amusing. She was a single, small woman dominating three hired killers without even lifting a single finger.

Camilla smirked.

"Very well then," She replied smoothly, showing them a tiny ounce of fake mercy. "It is all in the past. Don’t you agree?"

The two thugs nodded their heads frantically.

Camilla leaned back against the cushions again.

She looked out the window of the carriage. She saw the crumbling buildings of the deep parts of the lower city passing by. The smell of the ocean and rotting fish was getting stronger.

"How long will this ride last?" Camilla asked casually, returning her attention to the trembling men on the floor.

The first thug raised his head just a tiny fraction. He swallowed hard.

"We... we should be there in less than thirty minutes, my lady," the thug answered quickly, eager to provide her with perfect information.

Camilla nodded her head slowly.

"Good," Camilla said softly. "You may sit back down. Kneeling on the floor for thirty minutes will ruin your knees, and I need you both to be able to walk when we arrive."

The two thugs quickly scrambled back up onto the velvet seat. They sat stiff, trying to be on their best behavior for the entire remaining thirty minutes of the journey.

After a long, quiet ride, the carriage finally began to slow down. The sound of the wheels changed. They were no longer rolling on hard dirt; they were rolling over old, broken wooden planks. The smell of sea salt filled the carriage.

The carriage came to a stop.

Outside, the thug who was driving, climbed down from the high wooden box. He walked around to the side of the carriage.

Inside the carriage, the two thugs jumped up instantly.

One of the thugs reached out and grabbed the brass handle. He pushed the carriage door wide open.

"We are here, my lady," the thug announced very respectfully, bowing his head.

The two thugs quickly stepped out of the carriage first. They stood on the old wooden pier.

The fake driver, the man who had stolen Hugo’s uniform, quickly stepped forward. He stood right beside the small wooden step of the carriage. He raised his arm and held it out firmly, offering his forearm exactly like a trained, polite noble footman.

Camilla moved to the door. She looked down at the thug offering his arm.

She gave a polite, elegant smile.

She reached out her hand and placed her fingers lightly on the thug’s forearm. Using his arm for balance, she stepped gracefully down from the carriage. Her soft leather shoes touched the old wooden planks of the abandoned docks.

"Why, thank you," Camilla said politely, her voice sweet and composed.

The thug bowed his head quickly. "You are very welcome, my lady."

Camilla let go of his arm. She looked around.

They were standing at the very edge of the lower city. The old docks were abandoned. The wooden piers were broken. Large, empty merchant ships sat decaying in the water. The air was cold and damp.

Right in front of them stood an old, abandoned warehouse. The large sliding doors were slightly open, revealing a dark, empty space inside.

"Lead the way," Camilla ordered smoothly, gesturing toward the warehouse.
