"It’s the first time wind is blowing in this place," Rikki told Doha.
"Really?" Doha answered, sleepily. "Doesn’t it get hot with all that sun?"
"... No. It usually rains here when you’re not here."
"... ... That’s weird."
"It is. But this is not a real space, so I guess anything is possible here."
Doha looked at Rikki’s face. He had started talking a lot more after Doha threw that tantrum.
But his sudden change was very confusing.
Maybe he’s just as scared to be alone as I am...
Doha concluded when he couldn’t find the courage to ask Rikki directly.
Instead, he was just using this opportunity to be close to him.
After all, he looked identical to his Songrik and even was partly him if what he told Doha was true.
"You said you knew the real me in the real world. What kind of a person was I?" Doha asked laying his head on Rikki’s shoulder.
Rikki seemed disgusted by it but didn’t push his head away.
"You were... a dumb idiot, just like you are now," Rikki replied. "No, you are dumber than the real you."
"... " Doha stared at Rikki’s face as he looked into the distance, as if recalling a distant memory.
"I broke your heart in high school by ghosting the shit out of you," Rikki continued. "I heard you had lost your grandfather the day before I left back for the states. I simply chose not to pick up your calls. Then my number in the states was active that you didn’t have. I didn’t want to deal with your snotty face crying and moping around me."
Doha didn’t say anything.
He just stared at Rikki.
"You look like you would do something like that," Doha said, shortly. "But that’s not reason enough to trap you here to punish you. Tell me... What did you really do?"
Rikki kept staring in the distance as his face had an amused look now.
"We met again," he said. "Nine years later, on your grandmother’s funeral."
Doha sat up with interest and shock.
"I lost both my grandmother and grandfather? Is that why you were in a funeral home the last time we met?" Doha asked, impatiently.
"No, that funeral was for someone else... " Rikki seemed to avoid talking about it. "Aren’t you curious about what we did when we met all those years later?"
Doha just let go of Rikki dodging talking about that particular funeral. He just assumed it was someone close to him.
"What did we do?" Doha asked.
Rikki had an amused and mischievous look on his face as he said this.
"We fucked. "
And that was actually the first thing they really did.
Yoon Mokheon died a quick death because of the heart attack.
So much so that Been was resentful of the heavens for not giving him even a chance to save him.
But fate has a cruel way of telling you that you can never really defy it to matter how many chances you have.
Beom and Sarang had graduated college.
Sarang was getting ready to marry her boyfriend of four years (Fuckhead, as you may previously know). Also this was the time she was also job hunting.
Beom had completed his service and also graduated from police academy with flying colors.
And he had just started working as a detective in the force.
They were doing a routine three month health checkup as Mokheon’s sudden death had scared them.
Beom was a little underweight and Sarang just had some low blood haemoglobin, otherwise they were healthy.
But Yoon Noruen had to get a biopsy done in her large intestine for a tumor like growth.
As they feared, it was cancer.
But it was still in the initial stages and could be dealt with.
Beom and Sarang left no effort into taking care of Noruen and getting her treatment.
Noruen had insurance and Beom shouldered all the expenses that were out of insurance.
Noruen had strictly forbidden them from selling the family house in the countryside or their father’s house in the city.
She said they were their assets and should not be spent on a person who might not even survive.
Beom and Sarang were heartbroken and worked even harder to support Noruen’s treatment.
But, as if mocking their efforts, the cancer spread further to her liver and kidneys, failing her digestive system completely.
Her liver was shutting down due to septic shock and Beom could only watch helplessly as Noruen withered away to a yellow death.
With six months, Yoon Noruen was dead.
And this time, he had all the time to try and save her.
It was as if the gods were laughing at him for daring to believe he could stop them from what they meant to do if he had enough time.
It Yoon Noruen’s funeral that day.
Sarang was heartbroken and crying her heart out while Beom stood there again.
In the position of the chief mourner, as he could not afford to cry.
His sister only had him now.
He really couldn’t break down now.
And that also made him realize that he was alone, no shoulder for him as he was the shoulder that was supporting his family.
And it scared him.
As he sat in his place, he remembered Mokheon’s funeral.
How he had desperately called Jang Songrik and never received a reply.
It was funny and mortifying how he still had his number.
As if doing a final ritual, Beom briefly stepped out of the room and whipped out his phone.
Just like nine years ago, he called on a number that had just sit through his phone the entire time.
The ring was going through.
He had thoughts of messaging and calling Songrik before but he could never bring himself to.
Because that number was the only proof of his connection to him.
If it became clear that it no longer worked, he would lose the only connection he had with Songrik.
No one picked up the call...
Just like nine years ago.
Beom laughed melancholicly as he deleted the number from his phone.
He went back inside and sat in his position.
Alone.
But as if a miracle had happened, an hour later, someone showed up in the funeral room in front of the altar in funeral clothes.
He looked even more beautiful now that he was a little older.
It was Jang Songrik.
