Neo shook his head. He could not afford to be stingy now. He raised the vial and drank the liquid in one swallow. The bitter taste hit the back of his throat, then warmth spread through his chest. He stood, gripped his spear tighter, and stepped into the simulation.
The world around him flickered and locked into place. Zal waited in the center of the clearing, a mass of dark flesh and shifting shards that looked like broken glass. Neo charged. The first simulation ended in seconds. Zal’s claws tore through his chest. The monster’s jaws closed over his head and the feed began. Neo felt every wet crunch before the run cut off.
He restarted. The second run lasted only a little longer. Zal moved faster than Neo could track. One swipe took his legs. The eating started while Neo was still conscious. The third run, the fourth, the fifth—each time the pattern held. Zal closed the distance, killed him clean, and fed. By the tenth simulation Neo’s breathing was ragged even inside the safe space of the system. He had tried speed, feints, direct thrusts, even a desperate leap onto the monster’s back. Nothing worked. Zal always ended the fight the same way: kill, then eat.
In the eleventh simulation Neo changed tactics. He pulled a small bomb from his inventory, the kind he had saved for emergencies. When Zal lunged with its mouth wide, Neo threw the bomb straight into the open maw. The explosion tore the body apart from the inside. Black flesh and shards sprayed across the clearing. Neo allowed himself a single breath of relief.
Then the shards twitched. Each piece of broken shell unfolded into a smaller copy of Zal. The little versions crawled over the remains, feeding on the flesh of their parent. They grew fast. Within moments twenty full-sized Zals stood in a rough circle around him. They moved as one. Neo did not last long after that.
He reset again for the twelfth run. This time he tested the lust water. He had a small flask of it left. When Zal came close he threw the liquid across its body. The monster’s flesh smoked and blistered. It burned like acid. Zal’s roar turned sharp with pain and rage. The next second its claws punched through Neo’s stomach. The simulation ended with the taste of blood and the sound of the monster still screaming.
Neo stood in the loading space and stared at the replay data. The pattern was clear. Bomb first to break the main body. Lust water second to kill the shards before they could grow. He ran the combination once more in the final simulation to confirm the timing. Bomb into the mouth. Explosion. Immediate flood of lust water over the scattered pieces. The shards shriveled and died before they could feed. Zal’s core collapsed. The run ended with Neo still standing.
He closed his eyes and accepted the feedback. Strength poured into his arms and legs. The simulation data settled into his muscles like practiced memory. When he opened his eyes again he was back in the real cave.
Zal stood in front of him, the same mass of dark flesh and glass-like shards. Neo did not hesitate. He pulled the bomb, waited for the mouth to open, and threw. The blast ripped the monster open. Shards flew. Before any of them could twitch, Neo emptied every remaining drop of lust water across the remains. The pieces smoked, blackened, and stopped moving. Zal’s core cracked and went still.
Neo lowered his spear and let out a long breath. The cave was quiet for only a moment. Then he heard the soft shifting sound of the eggs deeper in the chamber. A black Ajax monster the size of a large dog circled him at a slow pace, claws clicking on stone. More lust water dripped from the ceiling in slow, steady drops.
Neo looked up at the falling liquid and spoke to the system. "Is there a function that lets me change the property of an object I choose, using mana stones?"
The system was silent for a few seconds. Then its voice returned, flat and clear. "There is one. It is a natural function of the system and can be used only once per year. Do you want to use it?"
Neo hesitated. The ability was powerful. Once a year meant he would not get another chance for a long time. He looked at the eggs, at the circling Ajax, at the water still falling. He had no other clean way out. He sighed and opened his inventory. Every mana stone he owned poured into the function. The system accepted them.
"Change the special property of the lust water," Neo said. "From increasing the breeding rate of Ajax monsters to making it burn easily, like gasoline."
The stones vanished. His count dropped to zero. The water dripping from the ceiling looked the same, but the system confirmed the change. Neo drove the butt of his spear into the cave ceiling. Rock cracked. A heavy sheet of the altered water poured down over the eggs and the floor.
He did not wait to watch. Neo ran for the exit. As he passed the main pool of water still on the ground he stabbed his spear into it. Pyro mana flared along the blade. Fire caught and raced across the surface. He reached the cave mouth, turned, and smashed the entrance shut with a heavy strike that brought stone down behind him.
Outside he drove the spear into the ground. A line of fire spread from the point of impact and crawled toward the sealed cave. Neo stood and listened. Muffled shouts rose from inside. The smell of cooked meat drifted out through the cracks.
A notification chimed. Quest complete. Rewards waited in his inventory. Neo let his shoulders drop. Relief settled over him for the first time in hours.
He started across the lake, water up to his knees. Halfway across, a laugh rolled down from the sky. Neo looked up. A small figure floated above him—a demon with a long white beard and a compact body. The demon’s voice carried easily.
"Were you the one who killed my test subject with that trick? Let’s see if you can survive your own plan."
Neo focused on the figure. The system fed him the information at once. Beard Demon. Peak transcendental level.
The demon pointed an open palm at the lake. A beam of fire shot downward. Neo was already in the middle of the water. He cursed and threw up a barrier in the same breath. Flame hit the surface and the entire lake ignited. Heat slammed against the barrier from every side.
The Beard Demon drifted lower until he hung directly over Neo. He raised a short staff and struck the barrier hard. The shield cracked. One of the demon’s fingers glowed. A thin beam of energy punched through the remaining barrier and through Neo’s left shoulder. Flesh and bone vanished in a clean circle. Neo felt the hole open. He could not even shout. His legs gave out and he dropped into the burning water.
The demon laughed again. "I thought you would withstand more moves. Too much praise for you, honestly."
He floated higher, gave Neo one last look, and flew away into the dark sky.
Neo lay half-submerged in the flaming lake. He could not move his left arm. Fire licked at his clothes and skin. He opened the system with a thought. "Can I take a debt of mana stones?"
"Affirmative," the system answered. "But you cannot take a debt in your current state. You must be fully healed first."
Neo cursed under his breath. He had zero mana stones left. The fire around him grew hotter. Flames climbed higher on his body. Pain sharpened with every second.
His only chance was the move he had thought of earlier but never tested under pressure. He would coat his entire body—skin, muscle, even the inside of the wound—with pure pyro mana and let the fire fuse with him instead of burning him.
Neo grit his teeth. The memory of the Beard Demon’s laugh pushed through the pain. He clenched his right fist and raised it toward the sky.
"Beard Demon!" he shouted. "I will get my revenge even if you run to the other side of the continent!"
Anger and humiliation burned hotter than the lake. The way the demon had treated him like nothing settled into a hard new goal: find that creature and end it.
A new quest window opened in front of his eyes.
Destroy the Beard Demon and ruin his plan with his close friend, the Masked Demon.
Hints: You will soon be approached by a person who can help you accomplish your goal. Make a good impression so he will help you. If you reject his help the quest difficulty will jump from C to S- and you will need to gather the rest of the necessary information about the two demons yourself.
Time remaining: 7 days.
Failure: Your death, the forest’s death, and the death of everyone you love.
Rewards: Ability to slow down time for a limited period.
The coating would not make him fully immune. The fire would still deal some damage. Neo shook his head once. It was still better than dying here.
He forced the pyro mana out through every pore. It wrapped his skin, sealed the hole in his shoulder, and sank deeper until the external flames no longer felt foreign. The system chimed.
Ding. Title acquired: Torch Man. Host can now enter this mode at any time.
Neo grinned through the remaining pain. "Not bad."
An idea rose from a movie he had watched long ago. He gathered pyro mana under his feet and released it in a single sharp burst. The force shot him straight up out of the burning lake. Wind tore past his face. He kept the flow steady and hovered for a moment, still grinning.
At least he could fly now.
