Chapter 384: Chapter 384 Something is not right

Shuan was practically glowing.

He had clearly taken a liking to his new niece-in-law, and the thought of Rose and Trevor becoming a real couple seemed to delight him.

He had no idea about Rose and Ryan’s complicated history. As far as he was concerned, the two had simply hit it off.

"Honestly, I think it’s great," Shuan said with a grin. "They’ve been getting along all night. Maybe my sister will be holding a grandbaby sooner than any of us expected."

Ryan said nothing.

His gaze settled on the closed door.

There was nothing behind it now. No movement. No sound.

If Rose and Trevor were still on the ship, then the blackout had probably ruined whatever private evening they’d planned. But if they’d already left...

Ryan’s expression became impossible to read.

He didn’t like the thought of Rose being alone with Trevor.

Not even a little.

Alicia glanced toward the door before looking back at Shuan.

"Why didn’t I see them leave?"

"Oh, they didn’t use the main exit," Shuan explained casually. "They took one of the smaller boats. Probably wanted to avoid the crowd."

He laughed.

"Can’t blame them. If you’re trying to spend some private time together, having half the guests watching you isn’t exactly ideal."

Alicia’s fingers curled around the keycard in her hand.

She stared at the door for several seconds before forcing a smile.

"I see."

Shuan, completely oblivious to the tension beside him, turned toward Ryan.

"Mr. Knight, with your leg like that, I’ll have someone come and help you off the ship."

Ryan didn’t answer.

He simply lowered his gaze.

Shuan took the silence as agreement and walked away to make arrangements.

Alicia remained beside Ryan.

After taking a slow breath, she turned toward him.

"It looks like I was worried for nothing. Professor Bennett is fine. And Mr. Robinson seems to be taking good care of her."

She smiled faintly.

"Looks like they decided to get a head start on their romantic evening."

With that, she stepped behind Ryan’s wheelchair and reached for the handles.

"Let me take you down. You shouldn’t be pushing yourself with your leg hurt."

Ryan’s hands moved first.

He gripped the wheels and rolled the chair forward, deliberately putting distance between them.

"No."

His voice was quiet.

Cold.

Final.

Alicia’s hand stopped in midair.

Ryan didn’t even look back.

He continued toward the exit on his own.

Alicia stood there, stunned.

She couldn’t understand it.

She hadn’t said anything inappropriate. She hadn’t crossed any obvious line. She’d been nothing but considerate toward him all evening.

So why did he seem to dislike even the slightest bit of contact from her?

She bit the inside of her cheek and watched him disappear into the crowd.

Yet somehow, his refusal only made him more intriguing.

A man who kept such rigid boundaries was rare.

Alicia’s gaze drifted back toward Trevor’s empty lounge.

If Shuan was right, then Rose and Trevor were already alone somewhere.

Her fingers tightened around the keycard of electricity room.

She stared at it for a long moment.

Then she slowly slipped it into her pocket.

"Mr. Knight!"

Owen came hurrying over.

"We need to get off the ship."

He glanced toward the chaos around them before lowering his voice.

"Do you want me to find Rose and bring her down?"

Ryan’s brows pulled together.

It was one of the few times all night that his expression openly betrayed what he was feeling.

He looked down at the lighter in his hand.

The tiny diamond that had once been set into it was gone.

His fingers closed around the lighter.

"No."

Owen hesitated.

"But things are getting chaotic. Aren’t you worried about her?"

Ryan finally looked up.

His eyes were cold.

"If she willingly chose to walk into someone else’s trap, why would I be the one expected to tear it apart for her?"

Owen stared at him.

He had absolutely no idea what that meant.

Ryan closed his eyes for a moment.

Tonight hadn’t happened by accident.

The Ellis family had deliberately put Rose in the middle of everything, treating her like some kind of prize.

The Robinsons hadn’t exactly helped.

Both families had interfered far too much in the younger generation’s lives, as though they had already decided how everything would end.

And if Julian hadn’t tipped them off, the Ellis family might never have gone this far.

Ryan opened his eyes.

The warmth had disappeared completely.

"Find Rose."

Owen nodded.

Ryan was about to say something else when he suddenly stopped.

His eyes narrowed.

"Wait."

He turned toward the direction Shuan had gone.

"Something doesn’t add up."

Owen followed his gaze.

Ryan’s voice dropped.

"At the auction tonight, was anyone else from the Robinson family there?"

*****

Rose and Trevor had, in fact, left the ship earlier.

They were already on their way back to Trevor’s place.

But the tension inside the car was anything but relaxed.

Trevor sat by the window, his head resting against the seat.

He was still burning up.

His breathing was slow and uneven, and every few seconds his throat tightened as he fought to keep himself under control.

Eventually, he turned his head.

His eyes landed on Rose.

For a moment, neither of them spoke.

Then Trevor reached for her hand.

Rose immediately pulled away.

The simple movement seemed to snap something back into place.

Trevor froze.

He closed his eyes and pressed two fingers against the bridge of his nose.

"I’m not myself tonight."

His voice was rough.

"Rose, I’m sorry."

He looked genuinely ashamed.

He knew exactly what he’d been thinking.

He’d wanted to kiss her.

He’d wanted to pull her closer.

And he’d wanted far more than he had any right to want.

Those thoughts had been running through his head all night, and the fact that he had nearly acted on them made him sick with himself.

Trevor shifted toward the opposite side of the back seat.

"Let’s keep some distance until this wears off."

Rose looked at him.

She could tell he was fighting himself.

As a doctor, she’d seen plenty of strange reactions caused by medication, alcohol, and substances people had taken without realizing what they contained.

Tonight’s party had been full of expensive cocktails, private bars, and people who liked experimenting with things they probably shouldn’t.

Some drinks were specifically designed to lower inhibitions and intensify attraction.

Rose had heard of them.

She just couldn’t understand how Trevor had ended up drinking one.

"We’re almost there," she said. "I’ll help you get through this."

The car soon pulled up outside Trevor’s private residence.

Rose glanced toward the house.

Then she made her decision.

She wasn’t going inside.

She opened her medical bag instead.

"I’ll treat you here."

Trevor looked at her.

"You don’t have to."

"I know."

Rose pulled out a few small medical supplies.

"But I’m not walking into your house while you’re like this."

There was no accusation in her voice.

Just a very clear boundary.

Trevor understood.

He nodded.

Rose had no intention of giving the situation any opportunity to become something neither of them had chosen.

She carefully administered the treatment she carried for emergencies like this, then gave him a small vial of peppermint-based aromatherapy oil she’d blended herself to help with nausea, dizziness, and mental fog.

The combination slowly began to take effect.

After several minutes, Trevor’s breathing steadied.

He opened his eyes.

For a while, he simply stared ahead.

Then he spoke quietly.

"Do you think I’m disgusting?"

Rose paused.

She looked at him.

Trevor was normally so controlled and serious that hearing the vulnerability in his voice felt strangely out of place.

"No."

She shook her head.

"You weren’t acting like yourself. I’m not going to hold something you couldn’t fully control against you."

She put the bottle away.

Trevor was silent.

Then his eyes shifted toward her.

"What if I was acting like myself?"

Rose stopped.

Trevor’s voice was barely above a whisper.

"What if I really wanted to kiss you?"

The question hung between them.

Rose didn’t answer immediately.

Neither did Trevor.

For the first time that night, there was nothing clouding his judgment.

He was asking her because he wanted to know the answer.

And that made the question far more dangerous than anything he’d said before.
