Chapter 418: A Quiet Place

The four hours of allotted rest passed in a suffocating, heavy silence.

Kyle didn’t sleep. He sat with his back pressed against the curved stone wall of the fissure, his arm wrapped firmly around Yua’s waist. She had fallen into a deep, silent exhaustion, her head resting heavily against his chest, her soft breaths warm against his collarbone. Every few minutes, her dark lashes would flutter, her fingers tightening on his torn sleeve as if checking to ensure he was still there beside her in the dark.

[Kyle,] Snow’s voice spoke gently inside his skull, her tone light and careful, framed by the quiet pulse of his neural link. [The atmospheric boundary outside the cave mouth is shifting. The thermal heat of the red sand is dropping as the central heart-sun dips lower behind the horizon. You have approximately twenty minutes before the dark cycle begins.]

’Thanks, Snow,’ Kyle thought back, using his thumb to gently trace the curve of Yua’s shoulder. ’How is Elara’s mana recovery holding up?’

[Her core density has restored to roughly forty-two percent,] Snow reported, a faint note of worry lacing her words. [It is enough to sustain the atmospheric filtering bubble for the refugees through the first stretch of the treeline, but if she is forced to cast high-tier light magic while maintaining the ward, her spiritual fatigue will hit a critical threshold.]

Kyle let out a slow, quiet breath, his jaw tightening. ’We won’t let it come to that. Yua and I will take out anything that gets close before she even needs to raise her wand.’

Beside them, Elara stirred with a soft groan, sitting up against the obsidian wall and rubbing her bleary golden eyes. Her hair was tangled, and dark shadows hung beneath her eyes, but the fierce determination in her posture hadn’t wavered an inch.

"Time?" Elara croaked, reaching for her wooden wand resting on the stone beside her.

"Twenty minutes," Kyle said softly, gently squeezing Yua’s side to rouse her.

Yua stirred instantly, her crimson eyes opening in the dim cave light. She didn’t look disoriented; the moment her consciousness returned, her gaze locked onto Kyle’s face, her hand rising to touch his cheek with a soft, lingering warmth before she pulled herself up into a sit.

"How are your ribs feeling?" Yua whispered, her fingers lightly brushing over the dark, torn fabric where the Council general’s hammer shockwave had bruised him.

"Better," Kyle smiled faintly, leaning in to press a brief, soft kiss against her forehead. "Your blood link fixed the worst of it. How’s your core?"

"Hungry," Yua admitted, a small, sheepish smile touching her lips, though her red eyes gleamed with lethal focus. "But I can fight. I won’t let those grey things touch you."

Kyle stood up, pulling Yua to her feet before turning toward the back of the cavern where Marcus had gathered the forty-seven refugees. The humans stood in a tight, terrified cluster. Old men were tying rags around their worn boots; mothers were holding their young children close, whispering desperate instructions into their hair.

Kyle walked over to Marcus, his expression hard, grounded, and clear.

"Marcus," Kyle said, his voice dropping into a stern whisper that carried clearly across the quiet cavern. "Listen to me carefully, and tell everyone behind you. The moment we step past that ridge into the grey trees, absolute silence is the only thing keeping us alive. No talking. No crying. If a child trips, catch them before they hit the dirt. If someone drops a canteen, pick it up before it makes a sound. If an Erphindah flies overhead, you do not run, you do not scream, and you do not panic. You freeze. Do you understand me?"

Marcus swallowed hard, looking into Kyle’s dark eyes, then turned back to face the frightened people. He gave a heavy, single nod. "We understand, Kyle. We’ll walk like ghosts."

"Good," Kyle said. He turned to Elara. "Bring up the ward."

Elara stepped to the mouth of the cavern, taking a deep, shuddering breath. She raised her wooden wand high, her golden eyes flashing with sudden, luminous power.

A soft, shimmering dome of pale golden light expanded from the tip of her wand, floating forward until it encapsulated Marcus, the forty-seven refugees, and the three of them. The thick, sulfurous smell of the outside world vanished instantly inside the bubble, replaced by clean, conjured air.

"Ward is set," Elara whispered, a bead of sweat immediately trickling down her temple from the constant magic draw. "Let’s move."

They stepped out of the fissure, leaving the hot blood-red sand behind as they crossed the narrow stone gulley and stepped beneath the looming canopy of **The Silent Forest**.

The transition was instant and terrifying.

The moment they crossed the outer threshold of grey trees, all ambient natural light vanished. The canopy above was an impenetrable ceiling of gnarled, leafless grey branches—wood as thick and dark as forged iron. Hanging from those sharp, needle-like twigs were hundreds of glowing, pulsing red fruits, looking disturbingly like human hearts beating in dark unison.

The ground beneath their boots wasn’t soil; it was a dense, crunchy layer of dried grey ash that threatened to puff loud with every step if they weren’t careful.

"Keep your steps soft," Kyle murmured, holding Yua’s hand tightly in his left while his right arm hung low, his fingers hovering near his shadow-infused boots.

[Kyle,] Snow whispered inside his skull, her voice tense and alert. [Sound dampening passive is active on your interface, but my sensors are picking up high-density acoustic vibrations thirty yards directly above your head. They are hanging in the upper branches.]

Kyle didn’t raise his head abruptly. Using his **[Kirlin Eyes]**, his vision shifted, highlighting the grey darkness above in distinct outline bands.

Clustered tightly along the heavy branches were dozens of grey, leathery creatures. They were the size of hunting hounds, their grey skin covered in jagged black spots, their long, clawed wings folded tight around their bodies. Their blood-red eyes were wide and unblinking, but their large, jagged ears were twitching constantly, turning like small radar dishes toward the faint, soft rustle of forty-seven pairs of boots moving through the ash.

The Erphindahs.

Yua felt Kyle’s hand tighten around hers. She looked up slowly, her crimson eyes instantly spotting the beasts in the dark canopy. Her blood magic hummed softly beneath her skin, two razor-sharp crimson glass blades materializing silently around her knuckles.

*RUSTLE.*

At the middle of the refugee line, an elderly woman stumbled over an exposed grey root, her foot catching in the rough ash.

She began to tip forward, a sharp, involuntary gasp escaping her throat—

Before her knees could hit the ground or her gasp could echo through the silent woods, Marcus lunged forward sideways, catching her around the waist in absolute silence, cushioning her weight against his chest as they both slid silently into the soft ash.

The line froze. Forty-seven people held their breath, nobody daring to take another step.

Above them, three Erphindahs unclasped their clawed feet from a heavy branch. They dropped four feet into the air, their wide, leathery wings opening without a single flap, gliding down through the dark grey branches like silent, spotted shadows.

They landed on a low-hanging branch directly twenty feet above Marcus and the old woman, their large, ear-dishes twisting toward the ground, their blood-red eyes staring blindly into the golden shimmer of Elara’s air ward.

Elara’s hand trembled around her wand. A single tear of sheer stress escaped her eye, but she bit her lower lip so hard a tiny drop of blood welled up, keeping her mouth completely shut.

Kyle didn’t hesitate.

[Snow, calculation,] Kyle commanded silently.

[Two targets on the low branch, one dropping from the left,] Snow responded instantly, her voice locked in absolute synchrony with his mind. [Execute silent physical intervention. Do not use Dark Flames—the combustion noise will trigger the upper colony.]

Kyle released Yua’s hand for a fraction of a second, giving her a sharp, silent signal with his fingers.

*Yua, take the left. I’ve got the two on the branch.*

Yua gave a single, cold nod.

**[Crimson Step]**

Yua vanished into a puff of silent, scentless red mist, reappearing instantly behind the falling Erphindah on the left. She didn’t let out a battle cry. She didn’t draw a breath. She brought her high-density **[Blood Edge]** blades down in a precise, silent cross-slash, severing the beast’s head from its grey neck before it could even open its mouth to scream.

As the beast’s body fell, Yua caught the dying corpse in her arms, absorbing its spraying blood directly into her own blood core to prevent a single heavy drop from hitting the crunchy ash below.

Simultaneously, Kyle moved.

**[Abyssal Talon Manifest + Light Combat Skill: Basic]**

Using the passive speed boost of his talon, Kyle blurred across the ten yards of grey ash, his boots making zero noise as he launched himself quietly into the air.

He reached the low branch in a heartbeat. His right leg, fully coated in jagged black shadow-armor, swept forward in a lethal arc.

**[Passive Proc: Soul Rend + 25% Armor Bypass]**

*CRACK-THWACK.*

The shadow talon caved in the first Erphindah’s skull before it could emit its supersonic frequency. Without landing, Kyle spun in midair, his left hand reaching out to grab the second beast by its throat, squeezing its windpipe shut with his bare demon strength while his shadow talon stabbed straight through its ribbed chest.

**[Passive Proc: Abyssal Reflex]**

A spectral shadow claw erupted from his leg, shredding the beast’s heart from the inside.

Kyle caught both dead Erphindahs by their wings, landing crouched in the ash without making a sound higher than a whisper.

Above them, the rest of the upper colony twitched, their ears turning, but receiving no high-pitched distress call or loud impact, they slowly settled back against the grey bark, their unblinking red eyes staring back into the dark.

Kyle dropped the three dead beasts near the base of a grey trunk, looking up to meet Yua’s crimson gaze as she dropped down beside him, her face flushed with reclaimed blood vitality.

She looked at him, her eyes soft, proud, and fiercely affectionate, wiping a tiny smear of dark beast blood from his chin with her thumb before taking his hand once more.

Kyle turned back to Marcus, giving the old man a silent nod of approval.

Marcus let out a quiet breath, helping the old woman to her feet, and the long, silent line of refugees continued their march deeper into the dead, grey heart of the Silent Forest, holding onto each other as they walked toward the core of Planet Kraken.
