The endless back-and-forth across the churning black river became a brutal test of raw endurance, every second bought with blood, sweat, and sheer willpower.
Kyle’s boots slammed onto the slick obsidian rock for the fourth time. The soles of his shadow-infused footwear sizzled softly where they touched the acidic residue, but his focus never wavered. Under his left arm, he held a young boy who was clutching his neck in terrified silence; under his right, a frail elderly man whose eyes were squeezed shut in silent prayer.
[Step left now, Kyle!] Snow’s voice cut through the deafening roar of the river, sharp and intensely alive in his mind. [The stone’s magnetic anchor is buckling under the weight of the current! Jump in two seconds!]
Kyle bent his knees, his muscles bulging under his dark demon scales, and launched himself across the gap just as the obsidian slab tipped violently backward, plunging into the black sludge with a heavy, corrosive hiss.
He landed heavily on the central basalt pillar, lowering the boy and the elderly man safely beside the growing cluster of refugees. His chest heaved, dark smoke curling from his lips as his transformation strained his stamina.
To his right, a flash of brilliant crimson mist burst open. Yua materialized a fraction of a second later, staggering forward two steps before her knees buckled. She didn’t hit the stone; Kyle caught her around the waist, pulling her flush against his chest.
Her face was deathly pale, her skin icy cold to the touch. Her blood-tethers dissolved into faint red sparkles, releasing five more refugees who scrambled safely toward Marcus and the children.
"Yua!" Kyle held her tight, his heart hammering against his ribs. "Talk to me."
Yua’s head rested heavily against his shoulder, her crimson eyes dull and unfocused. "My... my core is running on empty, Kyle," she whispered, her voice a thread of faint sound against the howling wind. "I’ve drawn too much blood magic without feeding... every leap feels like tearing my own veins apart."
"No more leaps for you," Kyle commanded, his voice trembling with a mixture of rage and desperation. "You stay here. I’ll fetch the rest."
"You can’t do it alone in time," Yua protested weakly, her fingers clutching his shirt over his chest. "The planetary cycle... the river is rising..."
[She’s right, Kyle,] Snow’s voice filled his mind, tinged with deep, protective urgency. [The river’s flow speed has increased by thirty-five percent over the last two minutes. The remaining sixteen refugees on the far shore are going to be cut off if we don’t complete the transit within ninety seconds. But Yua cannot survive another heavy cast without collapsing into a blood-sleep.]
’Snow, can I share my vital energy directly into her core through our bond?’ Kyle demanded in his thoughts, his mind racing.
[Yes, but doing so will drain your Demon Core down to critical levels,] Snow warned, her tone intensely personal, filled with genuine concern for him. [You still have two more regions to cross before you reach the Heart of Kraken. If you drain yourself now, you will be fighting on pure physical exhaustion.]
’Do it,’ Kyle ordered without a second thought. ’Transfer it!’
[Initiating vital link,] Snow replied softly, a gentle warmth spreading through his chest as she routed the internal energy flow. [Be careful, Kyle...]
Kyle pressed his forehead against Yua’s, channeling a massive surge of his dark demonic vitality straight into her through their soul connection. A deep, dark reddish-black light flared between them.
Yua gasped loudly, her eyes snapping wide open as a rich, vibrant crimson hue flooded back into her irises. Her skin warmed instantly under his touch, her pulse regaining its fierce, lethal rhythm. She stared at him in utter shock, feeling the sheer volume of life force he had just shoved into her soul.
"Kyle... what did you just give me?" she whispered, her voice trembling with emotion. "You... you gave me your own life force!"
"I told you," Kyle said, his voice raspy as his demon scales flickered and receded from his arms, leaving him visibly drained but resolute. "We do this together. Now let’s finish this!"
Yua looked at him, her eyes brimming with a mixture of overwhelming love and fierce determination. She didn’t waste breath on words; she simply grabbed his hand, squeezing it so tight her nails bit into his palm. "Together!"
"Elara!" Kyle called out, turning to the young light mage.
Elara was in terrible shape. She was kneeling on the cold basalt, her wand planted upright between her knees. Blood was trickling steadily from both her nostrils and the corner of her mouth, her pale hands shaking violently as she maintained the shimmering golden dome covering the fifty people now packed onto the central rock.
"Just... get... the rest..." Elara choked out, her golden eyes hazy with magic exhaustion. "I can hold... thirty... seconds..."
"Marcus!" Kyle shouted to the elder man. "Keep everyone tight in the center! Do not let anyone touch the edges!"
Marcus nodded frantically, herding the crying children into the absolute center of the pillar as Kyle and Yua turned back to face the river.
On the far bank, the final sixteen refugees were huddled together in terror. The black liquid was already overflowing the riverbanks, creeping up the slope toward their boots like living sludge.
"Snow, mark the final trajectory!" Kyle barked mentally.
[Calculating final window!] Snow’s voice boomed inside his mind, acting as his ultimate navigation system. [Three obsidian stones are rising simultaneously in a straight line! It is a direct sprint! You have twelve seconds before the magnetic alignment shatters! GO!]
"NOW!" Kyle yelled.
Kyle and Yua launched themselves off the central pillar at the exact same moment. They didn’t use cautious jumps this time; they moved in absolute sync, a shadow-clad warrior and a crimson mist blurring across the stepping stones like twin bolts of lightning.
They hit the far bank just as the dark sludge dissolved the shoes of the lead refugee.
"Grab hold!" Yua cried out, her voice echoing with newfound power from Kyle’s shared vitality. She didn’t just use five blood-tethers—she unleashed **[Sanguine Veil: Web Domain]**.
A massive, intricate net of glowing red blood-silk shot out from her palms, wrapping safely around all sixteen remaining refugees at once, binding them together into a single, floating cluster.
"Kyle! I’ve got them all!" Yua shouted, her muscles straining as she held the weight of sixteen adults in the air.
"I’ve got you!" Kyle roared.
He wrapped his left arm firmly around Yua’s waist, digging his shadow-boots deep into the crumbling bank. He didn’t have enough demon energy left to transform, but his shadow core burned bright.
**[Abyssal Talon: Shadow Leap]**
A burst of dark, void-like smoke erupted beneath Kyle’s feet. Carrying Yua, who was carrying sixteen floating humans, Kyle launched himself backward into the air, flying across the hundred-yard gap of boiling black acid in a single, desperate, physics-defying leap.
Below them, three massive Black-Nile Leeches erupted from the churning current, their gaping, tooth-filled maws stretching wide to swallow the falling cluster of humans mid-air.
"Get away from my people!"
From the central pillar, Elara raised her wand with a raw, agonizing scream of pure defiance.
**[Holy Light: Execution Spear]**
She didn’t use a quiet spell. She didn’t care about the noise anymore. A blinding, sun-bright javelin of pure golden light shot from her wand, tearing through the dark air and impaling the lead leech straight through its gaping throat.
*BOOOOOOM!*
The holy light detonated inside the dark creature’s flesh, the holy energy dealing devastating double-damage to the dark entity. The leech exploded into a shower of white ash and dead black sludge, the shockwave blasting the other two leeches back into the depths of the river.
A fraction of a second later, Kyle, Yua, and the sixteen refugees slammed onto the central basalt pillar, tumbling across the stone in a chaotic heap.
The riverbank behind them completely collapsed, swallowed whole by the rising tide of black acid.
The crossing was complete. All forty-seven refugees were alive.
Kyle lay on his back on the cold basalt, gasping heavily for air, his vision swimming with dark spots from sheer physical exhaustion. Yua lay beside him, her head resting on his shoulder, her arm wrapped tightly over his chest as she panted softly.
Elara dropped her wand. The golden light dome shrank instantly, drawing in until it barely covered the top of the basalt pillar, and she collapsed sideways onto the rock, unconscious from total mana depletion.
"Elara!" Marcus rushed over, carefully cradling the young mage’s head and wiping the blood from her face with a soft cloth. "She’s breathing... she’s just completely out of energy."
[Kyle...] Snow’s voice spoke gently in his mind, soft, tender, and deeply relieved. [You did it. You brought every single one of them across the Blood Drain.]
Kyle closed his eyes for three glorious seconds, letting Snow’s comforting presence wash over his frayed nerves. ’Thanks to you, Snow. I couldn’t have timed those leaps without you.’
[I am always with you, Kyle,] Snow replied, a faint, affectionate warmth pulsing through the neural link. [But do not rest for too long. Look ahead.]
Kyle forced his eyes open, sitting up slowly while helping Yua into a sitting position.
They were standing on the central basalt pillar, but the river didn’t end here. Looking forward across the remaining expanse of the black canyon, the black river narrowed, plunging down a steep, terrifying subterranean waterfall that emptied into a vast, misty valley below.
The sky above the valley wasn’t red or black—it was a sickly, pale white, filled with towering, skeletal structures that looked like the ribcages of ancient cosmic leviathans buried in the earth.
[Region Three lies at the bottom of that descent,] Snow informed him, drawing up the map data directly in his mind. [**The Nile Death**.]
Yua leaned her head against Kyle’s arm, staring down at the mist-shrouded valley below with a grave, heavy expression.
"The Nile Death..." Yua murmured, her voice laced with quiet dread. "The place where the ancient blood of Kraken goes to rot. The air down there isn’t just toxic, Kyle... it’s alive. It’s a sentient, flesh-eating fog."
Kyle took her hand, pulling her close as he looked out over the cliff edge toward their next nightmare.
"We’ve made it through two regions," Kyle said, his dark eyes burning with absolute, unbroken resolve as he looked at Yua, then at the sleeping Elara, and finally at the forty-seven humans depending on him. "We’ll break through this one, too."
