"Strength?"
"He became obsessed with it."
"Vampires grow with time."
"He wanted strength fast."
Silvian explained and—
"Oh."
Lucian’s expression changed.
He finally understood what was happening.
Strength.
Vampires were actually one of the most broken races in the world.
They grew stronger with age.
Every Vampire was the same. They gained strength when they reached a certain age, then more strength when they reached an older age.
Yes, all Vampires grew stronger simply by surviving long enough.
This was called the Crimson Ascension.
The first Ascension happened at the age of fifty. Their blood became denser, their physical abilities increased sharply, their regeneration improved, and whatever natural abilities their bloodline possessed became noticeably stronger.
The second Ascension occurred at the age of one hundred.
Again, their blood, their physical abilities, regeneration, and natural abilities, everything improved.
Then the same thing happened at the age of one hundred and fifty.
Then two hundred.
Three hundred.
Five hundred.
One thousand.
Two thousand.
And more.
According to known records, the process never actually stopped. Most Vampires were either hunted down or simply killed themselves out of boredom when they reached a certain age.
It was honestly an unfair advantage their race had.
All they had to do was survive long enough and they could become the strongest.
Sure, not every Vampire of the same age had the same level of strength.
Even when every Vampire could grow through Ascension, their growth depended on various factors. Their bloodline, their training, their control, several such factors mattered.
An exceptionally talented hundred-year-old Vampire might defeat an older Vampire through skill, Artifacts, or a superior bloodline.
But even then—
A Vampire’s age could never be ignored.
A Vampire’s age mattered more than anything else.
And this exact thing...
The thing that most beings in the world would think of as a blessing—
It was also a curse.
Because no matter how much a Vampire trained, how much effort he put in, no matter how much he honed his skills—
He could never actually see considerable growth unless he reached the Age of Ascension.
And to a being obsessed with strength like Varek...
That was no different from a nightmare.
He could train all he wanted, but he would never grow.
So he...
It was very likely that he would turn to... other means.
And just as Lucian expected—
"Varek always wanted more."
Silvian began.
"He wanted to grow stronger and he wanted to grow faster. He wanted enough power that he would never need to lower his head to an Elder or wait centuries before becoming important.
And eventually, that obsession led him somewhere... foolish.
He formed a contract with an Archdemon."
The Vampire revealed and the instant he did, Lucian’s expression changed.
"An Archdemon?"
Silvian nodded.
"Did he become a Demonic Host?"
"No."
Silvian shook his head, clarifying it immediately.
"Varek was prideful. He would never give a Demon control over his body. He is completely himself. The contract merely grants him access to one of the Archdemon’s powers."
"What power...?"
Lucian did not like where this was going.
And Silvian—
"Suffering."
He answered directly.
"The contract allows Varek to draw power from pain he personally inflicts."
Lucian gulped at that. The image was now forming in his head.
"The more someone suffers because of him, the more energy he receives."
"That’s why he isn’t killing anyone."
"A dead victim is actually inconvenient for him."
Silvian explained.
"A corpse does not suffer.
To Varek,
Someone’s pain is fuel.
The longer the pain continues, the more he gains.
Of course, stronger victims are more valuable since they usually suffer more. They have stronger bodies, greater endurance, regeneration, and far higher tolerance. Such beings usually never suffer, so when they do at the hands of Varek, they give him far more power than any ordinary being.
They are... perfect harvesting targets.
So Varek started hunting them.
Werewolves, Vampires, Witches, Demonic Hosts, Hunters, anyone strong enough to survive what he did to them. In his desperation, he even started targeting Vampires of his own House.
This continued until his House discovered the truth and..."
"And threw him out."
Lucian completed his words.
"Yes."
Silvian nodded.
"No Vampire House would keep a Demonic Contractor who hurts their own for power."
Lucian could understand that.
For Vampires whose primary goal was to survive, they would never keep a hunter in their home.
That was foolish.
"Varek became a rogue after that.
And once he lost the protection of his House, his life became... much more difficult.
The Enclave hunted him whenever he appeared. Even other races, including the Vampire Houses that were affected by his hunts, were after him.
Werewolf packs attacked him whenever he entered their territories. Witches started selling tracking curses designed specifically to track him down.
It became quite a big deal about a century ago. Varek was actually forced to go into hiding. He still hunted, but outside, his movements were far more controlled."
"But it’s different here."
Sabine spoke with a solemn look on her face.
Silvian nodded.
"Yes, out there, he only targeted isolated victims and was forced to run away before stronger forces arrived. He could never stay in one place for too long.
But in here, inside the Trial, a place where no one above one hundred and fifty can enter..."
"This would be like a heaven-sent opportunity."
Lucian spoke with a solemn look on his face and Silvian nodded.
"How did he even come inside?"
Naomi couldn’t help but question.
"You said it all happened a century ago? Shouldn’t Varek already be too old to come here?"
"He is one hundred and forty-nine."
Silvian answered and the group’s expressions changed.
"This really was a heaven-sent opportunity for him."
Lucian let out a dry laugh.
"Exactly."
Silvian nodded as well.
To Varek, this was indeed a gift from the Heavens. A place filled with thousands of young prodigies, people he could target however he desired, without having to worry about outside interference.
"For perhaps the first time in decades..."
Silvian spoke in a solemn tone.
"Varek does not need to hide.
And he is going to use that to his fullest advantage."
