"LEAVE HER THIS INSTANT!!"

Varek stared at Lucian as he screamed, then, he smiled.

The plan was very simple.

Lucian was strong, much, much stronger than any being he had faced in a long while. He, however, had one weakness.

This girl.

And Varek was going to use that.

One thing was very clear: the amount of energy Varek would receive if he emptied out all the energy he could receive from Lucian’s suffering—

It would surpass everything he had received all this time.

At that point, it wouldn’t be surprising if he had enough power to first go after Silvian, then even Rhydan.

Yes, that was how strong Lucian was. He gave Varek enough confidence to face Rhydan, the being he had been actively avoiding all this while.

Varek wanted Lucian to suffer, to scream in agony and despair but...

But considering he wasn’t getting any energy even when he had practically cut the demon open, one thing was very clear.

Lucian wasn’t suffering.

Due to some oddity Varek did not understand, the pain Lucian was in wasn’t enough to make him suffer.

However...

Pain wasn’t the only way he could devour the energy from his suffering. In fact, in Lucian’s case, the method was far simpler.

And it was once again related to his weakness.

This girl.

For some reason Varek did not understand, Lucian cared deeply for this girl. He protected her in every way he could, even putting his defences in jeopardy to save her.

So one thing was clear.

The girl’s safety mattered to him.

So...

What if he tortured the girl instead and made him watch?

Varek could practically imagine the unimaginable amount of energy that would fill him once he did that.

But...

Varek had been doing this for decades.

He needed one look to understand how he could cause the most amount of suffering, and as he glanced at Lucian—

He could see that torturing the girl wasn’t the way to gather the most amount of suffering, or at least, torturing her the way he was currently imagining wasn’t.

It was something else.

Proving incompetence.

Instead of torturing the girl, he needed Lucian to realise that he was not strong enough to protect her.

That...

That would send him into a deeper despair.

And that was exactly what Varek was planning. That was why he waited for Lucian to get close to him.

Lucian had an endless amount of energy. The way he used that energy gave him an advantage over Varek, however, he was physically weaker than him.

So Varek was going to use that.

He would give Lucian a chance to get close and save his girl, using nothing but his physical strength.

Then, he would crush him in the physical battle, throw his body away, and when he did, he would break one of the girl’s four limbs.

Then, he would call Lucian again, defeat him again, break another one of the girl’s limbs, and call him again.

He would continue this again and again and again.

Every time, he would give Lucian the opportunity to save his girl, and he would make sure he failed, and because he failed, he would hurt the girl.

First, it would be the limbs, then he would rip her hair out, then the eyes, teeth, nails, fingers. He would continue hurting her—

And every time the girl screamed in sheer agony, Lucian would hear it, and he would understand that this was happening because of him.

That was the plan.

The way to make Lucian suffer the most.

Varek’s crimson eyes glowed with a strong light as he stared at the man walking towards him. Just imagining how this would all play out made it impossible for him to contain his grin.

Still, he contained himself. The girl in his hand continued thrashing around, kicking him again and again. He ignored her.

He wouldn’t hurt her.

Not right now. He would hurt her in a way that made Lucian blame himself.

So he held back, and he waited.

Lucian took slow, weak steps towards him, his eyes, however, glared at him with intense anger.

Varek liked those eyes.

Mostly because imagining how those same, intense eyes would look when he begged was very, very interesting.

Finally, when Lucian appeared right in front of him and balanced his broken body by holding his hand—

Varek laughed.

"You ca—"

He tried to say something but—

"I said let go."

Lucian spoke as he looked at him with those same, intense eyes.

Then it happened.

What is it you desire?

Lucian heard a voice inside him.

"Strength."

He answered.

And—

Granted.

The voice answered.

And the next instant—

Everything changed.

BOOOOOOM

Black-violet energy exploded out of Lucian’s body.

The sheer force blasted through the corridor, cracking the ground beneath his feet and sending loose debris flying in every direction.

Varek’s eyes widened in horror.

"What—"

Before he could even say anything, a black hand grabbed his mouth, just the way he had grabbed Naomi’s.

The next second, he felt a sharp pain in the arm Lucian was holding. The pain was so intense that he lost all feeling in it for a brief moment. His hold over Naomi was released, but that wasn’t what mattered right now—

What mattered was the entity standing in front of him.

The Human...

No, the Demon.

The demon was changing.

He was shedding his human skin. Black-violet markings spread all over Lucian’s body like ink. They crawled from his chest towards his shoulders, his neck, his arms. They wrapped around his body in broken, uneven layers, almost like pieces of shattered armour had fused directly with his flesh.

Lucian’s fingers lengthened, his nails became black claws, the muscles around his body tightened, becoming denser and much, much, much harder.

And Varek—

He froze.

’No...’

Fear.

The sheer fear he felt was... something he couldn’t even describe.

The very air around Lucian changed, becoming more and more demonic.

And the Vampire...

"MMMHHHMMM!!"

He tried to say something but couldn’t.

Just like the girl he had been holding a few seconds ago.
