Chapter 1: Chapter 1: Demon Fiend
Jiang Mu had been hiding in the wardrobe for the better part of half an hour.
Inside the room, the woman and her husband were still arguing.
Peeking through the finger-wide crack in the wardrobe door, Jiang Mu saw one of his deerskin boots. He’d dropped it in his haste, and now the woman, in the heat of their argument, had deftly kicked it under the bed with her heel.
’Such skilled footwork... Now that’s what I call a professional.’
Jiang Mu sighed.
’What a mess.’
’How the hell did I just transmigrate into a wardrobe, of all places?’
’Couldn’t they have at least wound the clock back a little?’
’I haven’t gotten any of the pleasure, but the thrill is cranked to the max. My heart’s pounding like a drum.’
After all, the man in the room was a mountain of a man, with muscles so big they looked ready to burst. One punch from him, Jiang Mu figured, and he’d be meeting his ancestors.
Jiang Mu glanced down and muttered to himself, ’You’ve really gotten me into a world of trouble, haven’t you, buddy?’
’The kid had good taste, though.’
The woman in the room was bewitching. She had a voluptuous figure with an impossibly narrow, curving waist. She carried herself with such allure that even a stray dog would take one look and want to steal her away.
Right now, her almond-shaped eyes were welling with tears, her face a mask of grief and wronged indignation.
"You, Zhang! You’d better explain yourself! Who’s shameless? Who’s fooling around with some other man? If you don’t make it crystal clear today, I’ll kill myself right in front of you!"
With that, she threw herself headfirst at the nearby wall.
The burly man, whose face had been livid, saw this and lunged, grabbing her arm.
"Calm down!"
"How can I possibly be calm?!"
The beautiful woman violently shook off his arm. Her expression was one of profound sorrow as she spoke through her tears.
"Ever since I married into this family, I have been a completely devoted and virtuous wife. Even when times were hard, I managed this household without a single word of complaint."
"But you? My husband? You’re out all day, neglecting your family, and now you come home believing baseless gossip, accusing your own wife of having an affair! How am I supposed to go on living?!"
Heartbroken and aggrieved, the woman tried to slam her head against the wall again.
’Her acting is top-notch.’
Jiang Mu gave her a mental thumbs-up.
’It’s a shame I’m not just a spectator. If I were, I’d at least grab a bowl of melon seeds to enjoy the show.’
The burly man had no choice but to grab his overwrought wife in a hug. "It’s just... our neighbor, old Wang, said he saw a man come into our house and never leave," he explained.
"And you believe a word out of Wang the Bald’s mouth?"
The woman’s beautiful, phoenix-like eyes glared at her husband. "What if I told you he made a pass at me? Would you believe that?"
The big man stammered, "Old Wang... he’s not that kind of person."
"Fine! Just fine!"
The woman laughed, her voice sharp with anger. "So you’d rather believe a neighbor than your own wife.
Fine, Zhang Kui’zi, I see your true colors now. In your eyes, I’ve always been nothing but a common slut, haven’t I!?"
"My dear, I’ve never thought that,"
the big man said with a pained smile.
"Old Wang said the man who came over was that pretty boy... the one you accidentally dropped the window prop on from the second floor the other day. He sounded so certain..."
’Great, so I’m supposed to be Ximen Qing?’
Jiang Mu griped silently from inside the wardrobe. ’I wonder if my predecessor knew any demon-subduing martial arts.’
"Then search the room! Go on, see if you can find your ’pretty boy’!"
The woman jabbed a slender finger toward the wardrobe, her voice full of fury. "That’s right! Old Wang was right! I am cheating on you! The pretty boy is hiding right there in the wardrobe! Go on, look!"
"My dear, I do believe you..."
But even as he said it, his feet were already shuffling toward the wardrobe.
Jiang Mu’s nerves stretched taut.
’Lady, don’t overplay your hand.’
"I’m telling you, Zhang Kui’zi, if you search and find nothing, I’m going to the Du Yun River to throw myself in! And I mean it!"
The woman spat out the threat.
The man froze, his expression flickering between doubt and anger.
Inside the wardrobe, Jiang Mu didn’t dare to breathe.
The huge man was less than a meter away from him.
He could even smell the distinct stench of blood and raw meat clinging to the man, a sure sign he was a butcher.
THUMP! THUMP!
His heart rate doubled.
Jiang Mu’s fists clenched, cold sweat beading on his skin.
Fortunately, Zhang Kui’zi finally forced a smile and turned back to his wife, trying to placate her.
"My dear, I was just in a foul mood today. My head wasn’t clear, and I stupidly believed old Wang. I’ve always trusted you. Please don’t be angry, all right?"
Seeing that her husband had been cowed, the woman secretly breathed a sigh of relief before steeling herself once more.
She put on her wronged expression again and began to sob.
"We are husband and wife, bound together. We should trust one another. But now you, you bastard, you listen to some outsider and slander me. How am I to endure such an insult?"
The big man blushed, his face a picture of shame.
"As heaven is my witness, I am innocent! Zhang Kui’zi, since you no longer believe me, then I will prove my innocence with my own death!"
The woman lunged for the wall again.
Zhang Kui’zi’s expression changed. He scrambled forward and wrapped the woman tightly in his arms. "My dear, I was wrong! Please, forgive me! I’m sorry, my dear..."
"Let me die! Just let me die!"
The woman struggled relentlessly.
Jiang Mu watched, thoroughly engrossed.
As the woman’s protests grew more violent, Zhang Kui’zi suddenly threw her petite frame onto the bed and lunged after her.
"Zhang Kui’zi, you—"
The woman struggled fiercely, unable to form words. Her slender arms beat against the man’s broad shoulders and her legs kicked and tangled, trying to break free.
Jiang Mu clicked his tongue and shook his head.
’Damn.’
’Is a freeloader like me really allowed to watch this pay-per-view content?’
’The big guy is pretty smart, though. After all, some marital disputes can be resolved this way.’
’What’s that saying? ’A fight at the head of the bed is settled at the foot.’’
As time went on, the woman’s struggles began to weaken...
Jiang Mu nodded to himself.
’The big guy’s got some moves.’
But then, Jiang Mu’s brow furrowed. He sensed that something was wrong.
The woman wasn’t moving anymore.
A pale, slender arm dangled limply over the side of the bed.
CREAK... CREAK...
Just as Jiang Mu pressed closer to the crack in the door, trying to get a better look, Zhang Kui’zi suddenly sat up and whipped his head around.
The face that met his gaze was drenched in blood!
FUCK!!
Jiang Mu’s eyes flew wide as he sucked in a sharp, cold breath.
The same man who’d been berated by his wife moments ago now had a face streaked with blood, his eyes glowing crimson. He looked like a demon clawed straight out of hell, radiating pure violence.
On the bed, the woman was silent and still. Her death had been a gruesome one.
’What the fuck is happening!?’
Jiang Mu was stunned, his mind a complete blank.
The air in the room seemed to congeal. It was so quiet you could hear a pin drop, and even breathing felt difficult. The only sound was the frantic POUND POUND POUND of Jiang Mu’s heart inside the wardrobe.
The hulking man climbed off the bed.
He swayed as he walked, his brawny, blood-flecked body moving toward the wardrobe one step at a time.
His harsh, ragged breaths echoed through the room.
Every hair on Jiang Mu’s body stood on end. He couldn’t stop his body from trembling.
’What do I do?’
’Run?’
’Can I even get away?’
’Beg for mercy?’
’But in the state he’s in, would this guy even listen?’
’I can’t exactly say: "Hey, your wife was amazing," can I?’
A massive shadow slowly fell over him...
The heavy stench of blood wafted through the crack, carrying with it the scent of death.
But then Zhang Kui’zi stopped just before the wardrobe. He turned, his movements stiff and mechanical, and shuffled slowly back toward the bed like a walking corpse.
’He didn’t see me?’
Jiang Mu froze, the tension in his chest loosening ever so slightly.
SLAP!
Suddenly, a hand landed on his shoulder.
A moment later, a chilling voice whispered from right behind his neck. "Brother, you smell so... fragrant."
