Chapter 56: Chapter 56: Human Nature and Choice

CLANG...

From the living room to the bedroom, the two stumbled and bumped into everything.

The late summer-night breeze couldn’t dispel the heat in the bedroom.

"Chairman Gu, I..."

"I’ve never... done this before."

Luo Xiwen regained a sliver of consciousness.

"Not today."

"Haaaah..."

Gu Heng slowly lifted his head.

He let out a long breath. His eyes, tinged with alcohol, still held an intense desire.

"Chairman Gu... are you... are you feeling awful?"

Luo Xiwen looked at Gu Heng, who was watching her in silence. An alluring blush spread across her fair, oval face.

It crept from her face to her slender neck, and from her neck down past her collarbones.

"I’m fine..."

Gu Heng’s voice was a bit hoarse. He hadn’t expected that coming up for a cup of tea to sober up would lead to this situation.

"Then..."

Luo Xiwen was so shy she barely dared to meet Gu Heng’s gaze.

She wasn’t some naive little girl. She was already 27, and although she’d never been in a relationship, she understood what was happening.

Truthfully, she and Gu Heng were no different.

They were both novices with plenty of theoretical knowledge but zero practical experience.

Gu Heng didn’t respond, but his heart was pounding like a drum.

...

「The next morning.」

Gu Heng had stayed the night at her place, but when she woke up this morning, he was gone from her side.

There were no messages on WhatsApp and no missed calls, which almost made her feel as if last night had just been a dream.

But the lingering scent when she woke up today made it very clear that last night was no dream.

Her mind was a mess. Now that her once purely professional relationship with Gu Heng was suddenly something more, she honestly didn’t know how she should face him.

"Haaaah..."

Luo Xiwen turned off the shower and let out a long breath.

She decided to pretend last night never happened and continue carrying out Gu Heng’s instructions as she was supposed to.

After drying herself off, Luo Xiwen planned to start looking for and vetting gardeners for Gu Heng.

However, just as she finished getting dressed, her doorbell rang.

"Who is it?"

Luo Xiwen was a bit confused. She walked toward the door, calling out as she went.

"Excuse me, is this Ms. Luo’s residence?"

"We’re from the Chanel boutique at the Zhuozhan Shopping Center. Mr. Gu sent us to deliver some clothes and shoes for you."

In response to her question, a respectful voice quickly answered from outside the door.

Hearing this, Luo Xiwen’s steps faltered.

She opened the door to find the hallway crowded with people.

"Ms. Luo, I’m Qiao Ying, the sales manager from the Chanel boutique at Zhuozhan Shopping Center. It’s a pleasure to be of service."

The woman at the front bowed the moment Luo Xiwen opened the door, her tone filled with respect.

At the same time, her eyes flashed with surprise and sudden understanding as she took in Luo Xiwen’s fair, oval face—a natural, pristine beauty without a hint of makeup—and her elegant, refined features.

"Manager Qiao, please come in..."

Luo Xiwen was a little flustered.

Although she knew that top luxury brands like LV and Chanel offered at-home services, knowing about it was one thing. She had never imagined she would one day be on the receiving end of such treatment.

In a daze, she watched as Qiao Ying and the others entered her home.

They didn’t all come in, though. Only four of them stepped inside, while the rest remained in the hallway.

"Ms. Luo, Mr. Gu called us this morning and ordered four outfits and four handbags for you. Two are summer outfits and two are autumn outfits, and each one includes outerwear and shoes."

"Since Mr. Gu wasn’t sure about your size or preferences, he had us bring all the latest clothes, shoes, and bags from our boutique for you to choose from personally."

Standing in the middle of the living room, Qiao Ying further explained the purpose of their visit.

"This is..."

Luo Xiwen stared at the dazzling array of high-end luxury clothing in the sales associates’ hands. A single, ordinary-looking shirt probably cost as much as her entire monthly salary, yet here she was, free to choose whatever she wanted. It felt like a dream had invaded reality.

"Please wait a moment, I need to make a call."

Luo Xiwen took a deep breath, then hurried into the bedroom, closed the door, and called Gu Heng.

The call connected after about ten seconds.

"Chairman Gu..."

Luo Xiwen said his name, but then didn’t know how to continue.

"Xi Wen, do you like the clothes and bags?"

"If you don’t, I’ll have the LV boutique send someone over."

Hearing Gu Heng’s gentle voice over the phone, Luo Xiwen’s anxious heart inexplicably settled down.

"I like them."

Luo Xiwen bit her lip. "But..."

"Xi Wen, do you like me?"

"Or, to put it another way, do you have feelings for me?"

Gu Heng cut her off, his question frank and direct.

Caught off guard by Gu Heng’s directness, Luo Xiwen’s head spun.

’Do I like him?’

’Of course I do.’

’He’s young, rich, handsome, and has a prominent status.’

’Mmm...’

’And he’s rich and... very well-endowed.’

’It seems impossible for any woman who’s met a man like that not to like him, let alone a woman like her who has been by his side for so long.’

’It was only because of their respective ages and positions that she never dared to hope for anything more.’

But now that Gu Heng had asked, she certainly wasn’t going to lie. She chose to follow her heart and replied, "I do."

"If you like me, then there’s no need to say anything else."

Gu Heng’s warm voice came through the phone again. "From now on, you’ll be by my side, so you need to have a few decent outfits."

"Okay."

Luo Xiwen opened her mouth, but in the end, only managed that one word.

In just a few short words, it seemed like they had said nothing, and yet, they had said everything.

She knew very well that anyone—man or woman—who was young, rich, good-looking, and high-status was unlikely to be faithful. It was simply a challenge to human nature.

A mediocre life, or a chance to leap up the social ladder.

With every gain comes a loss.

Before last night, Luo Xiwen had always been torn between these two choices.

What she didn’t realize was that whenever you’re faced with two options and can’t decide, you should just close your eyes and pick the second one.

Because if you truly wanted the first option, the second one would never have even come up.

"Take your time choosing. You have the day off today~"

Hearing Luo Xiwen’s reply, a hint of laughter and intimacy crept into Gu Heng’s voice.

"Thank you, Chairman Gu..."

Luo Xiwen replied softly.

"Alright."

Gu Heng responded before saying anything more.

After hanging up, Luo Xiwen opened the bedroom door again. She gazed at the dazzling array of clothes and bags and let out a soft breath...
