Chapter 65: Chapter 65: I Know, I Know Everything
In the middle of the crowd, the petite Xu Mo looked like a poor little puppy drenched in a downpour, facing the reprimand from her superior and the cold stares of her colleagues.
"I..."
"I did press the call bell."
"But I pressed it many times, and no one ever came."
When Xu Mo heard Ding Xia was going to write this incident into her internship evaluation, she finally couldn’t stop herself from speaking up in her own defense.
"Xu Mo, what are you trying to say?"
"Are you saying what happened last night was my fault?"
Standing behind Head Nurse Ding Xia, Hu Yan’s expression changed the moment she heard Xu Mo’s defense. "After you rang the call bell last night, I ran over immediately! If you don’t believe me, go check the surveillance footage yourself!"
"It was clearly you who acted without authorization and violated procedure, and now you’re trying to push the blame onto me?"
"And to think I was so dedicated to mentoring you... Is this how you repay your mentor? I never thought that someone who seems so well-behaved could be such a complete ingrate!"
Hu Yan’s voice was high and shrill, like a hen being strangled, and was utterly grating to the ears.
At that moment, Xu Mo stared at Hu Yan’s vile expression, her eyes misting over, but she fought hard to keep the tears from falling.
’Until today, she could have never imagined that someone so shameless and disgusting could exist in this world.’
’Thinking about the black mark that might appear on her internship evaluation, thinking that her internship might end prematurely because of this, thinking about the anxious, disappointed look in her mother’s eyes...’
The sunlight outside the window was bright and warm, but Xu Mo felt a bone-deep chill, as if she had been plunged into an ice cellar.
"Fine!"
"Check the footage, then!"
"We’ll see who’s really at fault when the truth comes out!"
Just as Xu Mo was starting to feel a sense of despair, a clear, vaguely familiar voice cut through from the edge of the crowd.
Everyone on the scene turned toward the sound, and all eyes instantly focused on Gu Heng.
Today, Gu Heng wasn’t dressed as formally as he usually was.
He wore a plain gray t-shirt with black cargo shorts and black-and-white sneakers—the kind people call "pandas"—with no logos anywhere on his person. He had a clean, fresh look, like a bright and sunny young man.
He squeezed his way from the outside of the crowd to the center and, ignoring the astonished stares of the onlookers, walked straight up to Xu Mo.
"Do you have any idea you’re half an hour late!"
Gu Heng put on a fierce expression and glared at Xu Mo.
Xu Mo, who was over twenty centimeters shorter than Gu Heng, tilted her head back and stared blankly up at him. The tears she had held back for so long finally, at the very moment she saw him, began to silently trail down from the corners of her eyes.
"I’m sorry..."
Her eyes were like shimmering pools. She sniffled hard, her voice catching with a sob.
She already felt deeply wronged, and now, the thought that after half a month, she was finally seeing Gu Heng again only for him to find her in such a pathetic state made her feel even more aggrieved.
"Whoa, whoa, whoa..."
"Don’t cry."
Seeing this, Gu Heng instinctively reached out and wiped the tears from Xu Mo’s cheeks. "I was just teasing you. I know you didn’t mean to be late, and I know what happened last night wasn’t your fault at all."
"I know. I know everything."
It was those last few words from Gu Heng that made Xu Mo, who had been despairing and helpless, feel as if she had suddenly found an anchor. She threw herself into his arms, buried her face in his chest, and began to cry her heart out.
The soft, warm feeling of her in his arms made Gu Heng’s body stiffen slightly out of instinct.
But he relaxed almost immediately, raising a hand to gently pat her on the head in an incredibly tender gesture.
"Who are you?"
"Xu Mo’s boyfriend?"
Head Nurse Ding Xia witnessed this scene, her gaze like a knife as she sized Gu Heng up and down several times. Finally, she spoke in a hostile tone, "This is a hospital, and this is Xu Mo’s workplace. Our debriefing isn’t over yet. I don’t care who you are to her, please step aside."
"Debriefing?"
"Debriefing what?"
"Debriefing who bribed you more, and who bribed you less?"
Gu Heng tilted his head slightly, a mocking smile playing on his lips. "Head Nurse Ding, as for what happened last night, I think you know perfectly well whether it was Xu Mo’s fault or Hu Yan’s, don’t you?"
"And you have the audacity to say Xu Mo isn’t a good match for this job?"
"A match, a match, a match!"
"What are you, a bitch in heat?"
"Trying to match with anyone you meet!"
The moment Gu Heng’s words left his mouth, all the nurses on scene were dumbstruck. Then, they quickly tried to recall the saddest moments of their lives to keep themselves from bursting out laughing.
The nurses didn’t dare to laugh, but the ordinary bystanders in the crowd had no such reservations, and many of them broke into wide grins.
"You..."
Ding Xia had first been exposed, and now was being cursed at right to her face by Gu Heng.
Hearing the mockery from the crowd, her face instantly flushed a deep, purplish red.
"This is outrageous! Utterly outrageous!"
"Someone!"
"Get me security!"
"No!"
"Call 911!"
"Have the police arrest this punk immediately for disrupting hospital operations and insulting medical staff!"
Ding Xia was about to go mad with rage. The look she gave Gu Heng and Xu Mo was as if she wanted to eat them alive.
"Gu Heng, you should go."
Forgetting her tears, Xu Mo looked at Gu Heng anxiously and whispered, "I’ll be fine. Don’t worry about me. I’ll contact you later."
"It’s fine."
"You don’t need to worry about me."
Gu Heng looked at the tear-streaked Xu Mo and said with a chuckle, "We’re in the right. What’s there to be afraid of?"
"Xu Mo!"
"Let me tell you something!"
"Your internship at Jilin University Ninth Hospital is over!"
"And so is your career in medicine!"
"I’m saying it!"
"And it won’t matter who you go to for help!"
Seeing Gu Heng brazenly stand there flirting with Xu Mo after publicly humiliating her, Ding Xia felt as if all the blood in her body was rushing to her head.
’She’d been in the nursing industry for sixteen years and had become a head nurse at the age of twenty-nine. Her husband was the Deputy Chief Physician in the neurology department at Jilin University Ninth Hospital, and his promotion to Chief Physician was just a matter of time.’
’Her father-in-law used to be the Director of the Medical Affairs Department at Jilin University Ninth Hospital. Even though he had retired five years ago, he still had some influence among the hospital’s leadership.’
’With her connections, even the hospital directors were pleasant and friendly when they came for inspections. And now, she was being publicly humiliated by some young punk in front of all her subordinates.’
’She wasn’t a forgiving person to begin with, and now she lumped Xu Mo into her seething hatred.’
However, just as Ding Xia finished her tirade...
A somewhat detached voice, accompanied by the sound of hurried footsteps, drifted over from the end of the hallway...
