Luca immediately released her. "It’s okay. It’s okay..."

"No, it fucking isn’t," she gasped, bending around the pain. "Jesus Christ, Luca."

"I know, love." His voice softened. "I just need to pop it back in. It will only hurt for a second." He reached for her hand again, moving more slowly this time. "Trust me." He studied the injury properly. The thumb sat at an unnatural angle, but the problem was not only at the base. The second joint had shifted too.

His stomach dropped. "Oh, crap."

Veronica’s eyes widened. "What?"

He turned her hand slightly, his touch feather-light. She hissed through her teeth. "We need a hospital."

"What happened?"

"Nothing. Nothing," Luca said quickly. "You did good, baby."

Her mouth trembled. "Luca—"

"You did exactly what you needed to do." He drew her carefully against his chest, cradling her injured hand between them so nothing could strike it. "Come here."

Veronica melted into him, her remaining strength abandoning her all at once.

Luca pressed his lips to her hair. "I’m never letting you out of my sight ever again."

"Luca, you need to get checked out."

Blood still slipped from the wounds David had made, running over his wrist before dripping from his fingers. His shirt sleeve was soaked, his face pale beneath the fury.

"I’ll be fine," he said.

"You are literally leaking."

"I have had worse." He tightened his good arm around her waist and looked down at her legs. "Can you stand?"

Veronica tested her weight carefully, leaning heavily against him. "I think so..."

"Come on. Put on the shirt." Luca tugged Marco’s T-shirt over Veronica’s head, extremely careful with her. The fabric swallowed her whole, hanging almost to her knees. He bent and scooped her into his arms.

"Luca," she protested weakly, "you’re bleeding."

"I need this, okay?"

Exhaustion had finally found the courage to overpower her. Veronica rested her head against his shoulder as he carried her out of the warehouse.

Outside, the daylight felt offensive. It was too bright. Genovese men were wrestling David Vitale towards the open trunk of a black car.

David fought them, twisting and cursing. Luca lowered Veronica carefully onto her feet.

"I’ll be right back, love," he said. "Just one moment." He pressed a kiss to her forehead. "One moment." Luca walked towards the car.

The men held David against the bumper while another tried to force his legs into the trunk. David looked up, breathing hard, and met Luca’s eyes.

Luca smiled. It was the most satisfied smile Veronica had ever seen on him. "We are both going to enjoy this, David. You held her for five days. You touched her. You violated her.So I am going to give you five days in return. I will have you probed in every hole in your body until you are vomiting objects from your mouth. You will be tortured every minute of every single day. You will beg for death. You will cry for it, and I will make sure it remains the one mercy you cannot have."

Luca leaned nearer. "Every inch of skin on your body will be stripped away. I will gouge out your eyes and have them framed, so even after you are dead, you will still be forced to look at the family you failed to destroy. I will make you relive every horrible thing my wife has been through, and then I will have you burned alive and your ashes scattered on your sister’s grave so even in death, she will continue to remind you of your failure."

David smirked, not one bit moved by the promise of his death. Luca turned away from him and walked back to Veronica.

"I hope you promised him the most painful death," she said.

"I don’t have to promise him anything." Luca slipped his good arm around her waist. "I owe him nothing except exactly that." He guided her towards the waiting car, supporting most of her weight.

They climbed into the back seat, and Luca immediately pulled her close. A driver settled behind the wheel while Marco approached before the door could close.

"I hate to bother you right now, Luca," Marco said.

"Seal the area off," Luca answered. He knew exactly what he needed. There was still a warehouse full of things they had to know, a dead Vitale matriarch. "Move Graziella’s body and deliver her to Enzo," he added. "I will come back as soon as I can. Whatever is in there may give us closure."

Marco nodded. His gaze lingered briefly on Veronica, checking once more that she was truly there, alive and safely inside the car.

Then he stepped back. The vehicle pulled away. The journey to the Genovese mansion became a constant routine of Luca repeatedly checking that Veronica was breathing. She eventually rested against him, her head beneath his chin.

When they reached the mansion, the place erupted into a mad circus of worry, concern, and swiftness.

Guards rushed to open doors. Servants appeared from every corridor. Medical staff descended.

Carol was beside herself. She hurried forward when Luca carried Veronica inside, then stopped abruptly, resisting the urge to crush them both in a hug. Tears filled her eyes as she took in Veronica’s bruises, Luca’s blood-soaked body, and the way they clung to each other, surviving separately was no longer an option.

"Oh, my babies," she whispered.

Luca barely acknowledged anyone. He carried Veronica directly to the private hospital room inside the mansion and refused every attempt to examine him. "Her first," he ordered.

The private doctor immediately began assessing Veronica’s thumb, cuff wounds, bruises, and the lingering effects of the drugs in her system. Luca remained beside the bed, his good hand wrapped around hers, watching every movement.

Only after the doctor was attending to Veronica would Luca allow his own wounds to be treated, as long as he didn’t have to leave the room.

The doctor confirmed what Luca already knew. Veronica had fractured her thumb. The swelling had worsened, and the bruising around the joints had turned an angry shade of purple. Aside from the healing knife wound on her cheek, the raw skin around her wrists, and several bruises scattered across her body, she was otherwise physically stable.
