Undressed By The Mafia God

Chapter 533: I Was Afraid For You

"I was afraid for you. I did not want that pain for you. What can I say?" Massimo shook his head, a faint sadness touching his mouth. "You have excelled even where I failed. It has always been you...It will always be you, if you want it."

Luca inhaled slowly. "And if I do not?"

"Then Elio takes the chair."

"Christ."

"I cannot do this anymore, Luca," he said. "I am tired. You said you did not want this life for your child," Massimo reminded him. "I heard you...And I will not force you. Hell, I cannot. If you choose New York, choose it...But do not ask me to give any more of my life...I just want to spend it, getting married to your mother and taking care of as many grandchildren you choose to give me."

"I’d like to talk to Elio first then," Luca said.

Massimo inclined his head, as though he had expected that. "I will have your uncle send for him."

"Where is he?"

"In school somewhere. I have no idea," Massimo said. He could not be bothered to know which country his nephew was currently studying in. Massimo waved one hand. "You can question Elio when he arrives. For now, you both should leave for your appointment."

"Appointment?" Veronica spoke for the first time since the argument had started. She had stayed quiet because this was father-and-son territory. She had no desire to step into their dysfunction.

But she was looking at Massimo with new eyes. Massimo was terrifying no doubt. But now, beneath the Don, she had seen the tired father. The old warrior asking for one final act of mercy.

A life.

With Carol.

With grandchildren.

It was sweet.

Veronica narrowed her eyes. "Is this like a session with a therapist?"

"What therapist works at night?" Luca said.

"I don’t want to ruin the fun," Massimo said.

"Fine," Luca said at last. "Come on, babe." He reached for Veronica just as Marco entered the living area.

"Boss?"

Luca turned. "Marco. Everything good?"

"Yes." Marco’s gaze flicked quickly around the room. "I just got a call from Commissioned. The men said Mr Kane has been in to see you twice now. He says to tell you it’s important."

"Probably needs another favour," Luca said. "The devil can’t catch a break." He took Veronica’s hand. "I’ll talk to him when we get back to New York," he added, "if it’s not too late."

Marco nodded. "I’ll let them know."

"Don sent us to a house?" Luca said.

The car rolled to a stop inside the courtyard of a private estate tucked behind tall iron gates.

Veronica stared through the windshield. "This is not suspicious at all." She turned to him. "Do you know what we are walking into?"

"No."

They got out of the car. A man who had opened the gate stood near the entrance, dressed in a dark suit with no visible weapon.

Luca signalled to him. The man hurried over. "Who lives here?" Luca asked.

"No one, sir," the man responded.

"Who do you work for?" Luca asked.

"You, sir."

There was a pause. Veronica looked from the guard to Luca.

Luca let out a confused chuckle. "Who owns this house?"

"You do."

Another pause.

Luca’s head tilted slightly. "Are you stupid or something?"

Veronica stepped in quickly. She knew and embraced her role as occasional translator for her husband’s terrifying lack of social manners. "What my dear husband means to say is..." She smiled at the guard, warm enough to soften the insult Luca had just thrown at him. "Don Genovese asked us to come here, and we have no idea what this place is."

The guard’s shoulders eased by half an inch. "Oh. The place was recently purchased. Don Genovese did come by a few days ago to inspect. I am just a temporary security agent to fill in until you decide what staff you need."

Luca looked up at the estate again. The house was beautiful. Pale stone walls, tall windows, wide steps leading to carved double doors.

Massimo had not sent them to a random address. He had given them property.

"You do have a cleared guest waiting for you inside," the guard added.

That finally pulled Luca’s attention back. "A guest."

"Yes, sir."

Veronica’s smile became careful. "Thank you so much. Who is this guest?"

"Mistress Marceline," the guard answered.

Behind her, Luca went very still.

Then, with exhaustion and the last shred of his patience catching fire, he sighed, "Ah, fuck."

Veronica turned towards him. "You know her?" she asked.

"Sadly, I do."

Her brows lifted.

Luca rubbed a hand across his jaw. "I told you my father is never up to any good."

Veronica turned back to the guard. "Would you excuse us, please?"

The man nodded immediately and retreated towards his post. Veronica waited until he was far enough away before facing Luca fully.

"Start talking," she said.

Luca exhaled. "It’s..." He stopped.

Veronica folded her arms, careful of her cast. "It’s what?"

"She’s a professional dominatrix."

Her brows rose higher. There were families with boundaries. Then there was this. Veronica stared at her husband. "You have got to explain that before my brain starts filling in blanks on its own."

Luca muttered something in Italian under his breath. "My father said I needed a controlled way to... I don’t know. Give pain somewhere to go. Punishment. Penance."

Veronica’s mouth parted slightly. "And you know her how?" she asked.

Luca gave her a look. "Not like that. She has worked with men in our world before."

"You’ve got to be kidding me. This is the solution your father came up with?"

"Don’t yell at me," Luca said, lifting both hands slightly. "I didn’t know anything about it either. Look," he continued, glancing towards the house, "we can just go back home."

"I would really like to see what this is about."

Luca’s face tightened. "God, fuck no..."
