Undressed By The Mafia God

Chapter 542: Don’t Flatter Yourself

Soon, they stood outside Luca’s office. Marco knocked once, waited for the low command from within, then opened the door.

Luca was behind his desk. "Mr Kane," Luca said, leaning back in his chair. "I hear I became your favourite person while I was gone. They do say you don’t know what you have, until its gone."

Winn stepped into the office and took the room in at a glance. "Don’t flatter yourself...I came here to do you a favour."

Luca chuckled. Disbelief etched into his voice. "You?" Luca asked. "You want to do me a favour? Are we in some kind of mirror dimension?" Luca spread one hand across his desk. "In case you have forgotten, I do the favours."

"Oh, not your kind of favours." Winn settled into the chair opposite him.

Luca tapped one finger against his desk. "What’s this about?"

"Believe me, there are no strings attached," Winn said.

Luca leaned back in his chair, eyes narrowed. "No strings," he repeated.

"No strings."

"How generous."

"You did me a solid. You saved me," Winn continued. "You saved my wife. This is me being grateful."

"Speak," Luca said.

"The police are asking questions."

"What kind of questions?" Luca asked.

"Specific ones." Winn rested one hand on the arm of the chair, his posture still relaxed, though his eyes had lost every trace of dry amusement. "I got the first visit. Then Ivy. After that, I heard from two people. Then a third. All people who, in one way or another, have crossed paths with you." his mouth hardened. "Or come to you for help."

Police fishing expeditions happened all the time. But specific questions around Luca’s favours meant someone had drawn a map.

"They are fishing," Winn said. "And it won’t be long before they hook something."

Luca’s fingers tapped against the desk. When he did, it meant his mind had already gone to work. "You’re afraid I will give you up if the police ever get me."

"Luca," Winn said, almost gently, "you insult me." He looked irritated that Luca had chosen the cheapest interpretation available. "You’re coming to the wrong conclusions. I am not here because I think you will fold under police pressure. I may dislike your methods, but I do not think you are stupid."

"I am here because someone is rounding up people who have come to ask you for favours." Winn stood then, smoothing one hand down the front of his jacket. "I’d look inside your circle."

Luca’s eyes darkened as he rose slowly. "I just realised something, Mr Kane."

Winn looked at him. as he walked around the desk, each step carrying that easy violence that made even confident men remember they had bones.

"You are the one I should be most wary of. You and your wife," Luca added. "You are the only outsiders who have been in my special room."

"I did what I had to do to protect my family," Winn said.

Luca stopped in front of him. The two men held each other’s gaze.

"I am not afraid of the consequences," Winn continued. "I’d do it over and over again without regrets."

It was the language Luca understood.

Family.

Protection.

"I respect that," Luca said. "Thank you, Mr Kane," he added, and this time his sincerity was unmistakable. "You surely have given me something to think about."

Winn turned as if to leave, then paused near the door. He looked back at Luca. "Take care of your business, Luca."

"I always do."

Winn continued. "You might be a son of a bitch, but you are a good son of a bitch."

"You want to walk out of here with your tongue, Winn Kane?"

"I see you don’t do well with compliments."

"many people don’t survive long enough to submit feedback."

Winn adjusted his jacket. "Have a good day." He said and walked out.

Luca walked back to his seat, and leaned back after Winn left and waited. The police were asking questions around people who had walked through his world briefly. He stared at the closed door for a moment, his fingers resting lightly on the arm of his chair. Names began arranging themselves. Favour by favour. Debt by debt.

Winn had said to look inside his circle. He got up and crossed into Marco’s office without knocking.

Marco looked up from his desk at once.

"Hey..."

"Boss." Marco straightened slightly, reading Luca’s face the way he always did. "What did Kane want?"

Luca shut the door behind him. "He was questioned by the police. He says it has to do with me."

Marco’s eyes narrowed.

"I need you to wall off the investigation room completely," Luca said.

Marco nodded. "Yes, boss."

"Before that," Luca said, "I need to see the Bible."

Marco stood and went to the safe built behind a false panel near the side cabinet. He entered the numbers, shielded by habit. The lock clicked open.

Inside lay the Bible. it had a black leather cover and a zip. Marco retrieved it and brought it to the table.

Luca unzipped the cover and opened it. His fingers scanned the list slowly. "Kane’s name is not on here."

"Yes," Marco replied. "You asked me to take off his and his wife’s name after the favour he did us."

"Hmmm," Luca murmured. "I remember." His eyes remained on the page. "Who else’s did you take off?"

"Vito Scalese," Marco said. "Also on your instruction."

Luca closed the book and handed it back. "Burn it."

"Boss, there are some names here we haven’t collected on their debts yet."

"I know. I’m sure memory can serve us," Luca added.

"Of course," Marco said. He took the Bible from Luca and walked to the metal bin near the far wall. He placed the book inside then he reached for the bottle of alcohol kept in the side cabinet. He poured it over the Bible.

Names darkened as the liquid soaked through the pages. Marco struck a match. The tiny flame caught then he threw it in.
