"True. Vee is your sister. She will choose you over me a hundred times over." Luca admitted. "But Marco?" he shook his head. "No. You will not win this, Val. Not this fight you have begun."
"You will tell them?"
Luca stared at her as if she had insulted him. "God, no. No. I will not hurt my wife like that. She has been through enough...She is pregnant and fragile. She would probably kill me herself if she heard me call her fragile. Saves you the stress uhn?" he chuckled slightly at the thought of his pregnant, angry wife.
"So I come with the first warning," Luca said. "Be sure this path you have chosen is the one you want to walk on."
"You are the cancer in this family," she said. "You will not go until everyone is dead. Don’t you think it is time for you to cut yourself out and let the family have peace?"
"You are wrong," he said. "I saved this family. I saved this family with my blood, my sweat, my pride. You included. You ungrateful little piece of shit."
Her grip closed around the hidden gun. "I urge you to do some thinking."
"I did. It is not my fault whatever losses we have suffered. Its not my fault. The only crime I have committed against you," he said, "is falling in love with your sister. That is all. It is quite amazing...that what drew me to her aside from her beauty was the way she loved you. The way she protected you. The way she sacrificed for you. Her loyalty to you was proof that she was made to be Donna. My Donna."
Valentina’s eyes burned because he was right. Damn him, he was right. Vee had fought for her. Which is why she was fighting for her in return now. If she didn’t do anything, no one would.
"So tell me, what’s your plan here?"
"Does this line of questioning work on your so-called enemies?" Valentina asked. Her voice was steadier than she felt.
Still, she refused to crumble.
"You think I am just going to spill my guts?" she asked.
Luca watched her for a moment then he stood slowly. He put his hands in his pockets, and somehow became more dangerous for it. "You want me out of the way."
Valentina said nothing. She could deny it, but the lie would sit badly between them. Luca would hear it before it fully left her mouth.
"Let me make it easy for you," he continued. "The only way I will be leaving my wife, my child, no matter where I am...is if I am in a box, dead."
Valentina’s grip tightened around the gun.
"So I suggest you lift that gun you have hidden right now and shoot me."
Her breath stopped.
Luca’s gaze returned to her face. "That, Valentina, is the only way you will be getting rid of me."
Valentina’s fingers trembled around the gun. She could not shoot him. God help her, even after everything, she knew that she couldn’t do that to either Vee or Marco.
Not when Vee loved him with every piece of herself. Then the front door opened.
"Val!" Vee’s voice cut through the living room like salvation.
Valentina dropped the gun so quickly it nearly slipped from her hand. She pushed it back beneath the bar edge and turned towards her sister’s voice. "I’m in here!" she called.
Vee entered the living room moments later and stopped when she saw Luca. "You said you would be thirty minutes later."
"I changed my mind," he said.
Vee walked forward and kissed his cheek. Luca bent slightly to accept the kiss, his hand brushing Vee’s waist. Vee’s eyes softened when she looked at him.
"What’s going on?" Val asked.
"Oh," Vee said brightly, "Luca wants us to take Matteo to the park."
Valentina blinked. "What?"
"He wants to begin practising."
Luca’s mouth curved faintly. "Babies require skill."
Valentina understood. This was not about practice. Luca was taking Matteo. He was taking the baby out of her arms, out of her immediate reach.
The message was clear.
I know.
And now I can hurt you just as easily as you can hurt me.
"Oh," Val said, forcing herself to smile. "I’ll just get changed."
Vee waved a hand. "Oh no. We’d be glad to take him off your hands."
"No, really..." Valentina’s eyes travelled frantically to Luca. She could not help it.
The fear was evident in her face. His expression did not change, but his eyes held hers. Valentina swallowed.
"Val?" Vee’s brows lifted slightly. "Come on."
Matteo chose that moment to make a soft little sound. Poor child. Born into the wrong family and still somehow the happiest person in every room.
Valentina kissed his head. Her hands shook as she lifted him from her chest. Vee stepped closer, smiling, arms already open. She handed Matteo to her sister.
Vee took him carefully, her whole face lighting up as he settled against her. "There’s my handsome boy."
Matteo grabbed at her hair immediately.
"Ow. Violent little thing," Vee said, laughing. "Definitely raised around Genovese men."
"He is Montgomery," Val said instinctively but quickly added. "I’ll get his walker and a change of clothes."
"Okay..." Vee said, already cooing at Matteo.
The baby lit up. His little hands opened and closed, his whole body kicking. Matteo only knew his aunt was here, and Aunt Vee meant cuddles, nonsense songs, and possibly being allowed to pull her earrings.
"Look who is here to spoil you," Vee sang softly. She turned and held him towards Luca.
Valentina’s heart thundered as she walked towards the stairs. Every step felt wrong. Vee would not let Luca hurt Matteo.
Would she?
The thought was cruel, and Valentina hated herself for it immediately. Veronica loved Matteo. Veronica would throw herself in front of a bullet for him.
But Veronica did not know what was happening.
She did not know Luca was not practising for fatherhood out of sweet nervousness.
