"Right now, all I am worried about is my husband," she said. "Everything else can take a back seat. Now help me fucking get dressed."
Val frowned. When Veronica raised her voice like that, arguments ended. Val knew that tone too well. She helped Vee out of the hospital gown carefully, working around the bandaged hand. Val pulled the bag closer and searched through the clothes they had brought. Val helped her into a stretchy dress.
"Get me my phone," Vee instructed.
Val did as she was told. Before she knew it, Vee had the device in her hand and was making calls. She called the bodyguards first, ordered them to bring the car.
Then Vee looked at her. "Did you call Marco already?"
"No..."
Vee’s eyes narrowed. "Why not?"
"Well, Marco isn’t here. He is all the way in Italy." Val tried for reason, though it came out thin. "What can he do?"
Vee did not bother answering. She simply dialled Marco’s number. Val stood there, feeling suddenly small.
Marco answered quickly. Val watched her sister speak and listen. This was Donna. She knew exactly which monster to wake first. Which lawyer needed to be contacted. Apparently, there was a designated famiglia lawyer.
Vee ended the call and immediately made another. Then another. The world around them rearranged itself through her voice.
Val saw a version of Veronica she was not familiar with. It seemed Luca was still there in the room with them. The cold that usually surrounded him when he was handling business was what settled on her sister.
Vee’s guards arrived fast. She pulled her jacket on with one hand. The other hand hung uselessly at her side. Her body felt heavy, her head still a little foggy, but none of that mattered. She slipped her feet into flats. Then she turned to Val. "Pack my things and take them home."
"Vee—"
"I am not asking."
Val closed her mouth. Veronica had very little patience left obviously. Vee went to the front desk and checked herself out against medical advice.
The doctor appeared and tried to protest. Vee signed the necessary papers, thanked them politely enough to avoid sounding entirely unhinged, and walked out with two bodyguards flanking her.
She headed straight to the precinct. By the time she arrived, the medication had worn off enough for the pain to begin knocking. She ignored it. Pain could take a number and sit down. Her husband had priority.
The precinct waiting area was full of people. They stared at the bandage wrapped around her hand.
Vee sat down and crossed her legs. She kept her back straight and her face calm. Inside, she was anything but calm.
But fear would not help him. Panic would not get him released. Soon, the precinct door opened, and Paolo Greco stepped in.
Vee recognised him immediately. She had met his wife recently after she became Donna. There had been some matter. Vee could not remember the details now. Her mind was still scattered. "Paolo Greco?" she called.
He turned. The moment he saw her, his eyes widened. "Donna!"
She ignored the outrageous horror on his face as he took in her bandaged hand. "They have him on a murder charge...Go in there, do your thing, and get my husband out."
"Yes, I will, but for the sake of all our heads, please go back to the hospital. Donna, please."
Vee looked up at him. "Do I look like a woman who is going to leave here without her husband?"
"I’ll try to see what they have," he said.
"They have nothing. Get him out." Vee sat back down and crossed her legs again. Her body wanted rest. Her hand had begun to throb beneath the wrapping.

Luciano sat down, still looking bored, while his lawyer argued with Voss. Paolo Greco stood beside the table with his briefcase open. He had already made it clear that his client was exercising his right to remain silent and that any further questioning without counsel’s consent would become an expensive mistake.
Voss was trying very hard not to show his hand. He had waited years for this moment, and now that he had Luca in a room, he wanted to savour it without drooling on the table.
Still, even obsession needed evidence. As usual, evidence was demanded. Any physical link that placed Luca with Paul Marino. Any weapon recovered.
Paolo asked the questions smoothly. Voss dodged what he could. Paolo was good at what he did. He defended members of the famiglia in New York, and he made quite a fortune doing it.
When Voss could no longer tolerate being professionally peeled open, he pushed back from the table.
"Speak with the DA," he said tightly. "But he is not leaving holding. Your client can argue bail at arraignment."
"I’d like to speak with my client," Paolo said. Then he looked pointedly at the door. "Get out."
Voss’s eyes moved to Luca. Luca looked as though none of this concerned him personally. The second the door closed, Paolo spoke but with a lowered, respectful voice this time.
"Your wife is here."
"Get her back home," he said. "Tell her I’m good."
Paolo sat across from him. "I fear they have something concrete. I called our guy to order your release...He says they got you good. He will find out what is going on, but everything is on the hush. I will push the arraignment immediately. Friendly judge."
"Call Marco," Luca said. "He will know what to do."
"Is there anything else you need?"
"Just get Vee back home."
Paolo gave a small nod. "I will try." He got to his feet, collected his papers, and walked out to deliver the news to Veronica.
Vee was still in the waiting area. Paolo approached carefully.
"Donna."
"Where is my husband?"
"He is fine."
"What did they say?"
"He will not be released from holding. We push arraignment immediately. But Luca wants you home."
"I am not leaving," she said. "I will wait for his arraignment. Call Marco. Get the judge we need available and taking the case."
