Chapter 1: Chapter 1: The Cold Goddess
’I hear the Yang family’s daughter is stone-faced—no one’s ever seen her smile. Plus, she’s super domineering. Marrying a woman like that would be a fate worse than death. I have to call this engagement off. How can a real man let a single piece of paper chain him up and take away his freedom?’
After tossing his luggage onto the sofa, Wang Chenning flopped onto the bed, lacing his hands behind his head to think.
’But how should I bring it up with her? And will the Yang family’s grandfather even agree?’
His phone rang, displaying an unknown number on the screen.
"Hello, this is Yang Xiaofei." After he answered, a pleasant, mellow female voice came through the receiver. "Can we meet?"
"Yang Xiaofei?!" Wang Chenning was stunned for a moment, then immediately agreed. "Yes!"
Yang Xiaofei was the fiancée his grandfather, Wang Chongjiu, had arranged for him—a legendary ice queen who supposedly wore a constant scowl.
Wang Chongjiu and Yang Xiaofei’s grandfather were the best of friends. When they got married, they’d sworn to unite their families through the marriage of their children, but they both ended up having sons. So, they set their sights on their grandchildren, arranging the engagement between Wang Chenning and Yang Xiaofei.
Wang Chenning was completely against it. ’What era is this? Who still plays these arranged marriage games?’
He had just arrived and settled down in the Capital City, Yandu, and now Yang Xiaofei was already asking to meet. He needed to deal with this swiftly and decisively.
After agreeing on a place to meet, they hung up.
Tossing his phone aside, Wang Chenning went into the bathroom to tidy up a bit, deliberately making himself look a little more rustic before heading out.
On his way, he received a text message from another unknown number. The sender hoped he would break off the engagement with Yang Xiaofei.
It said that if Wang Chenning agreed, the Yang family would compensate him enough to live comfortably for the rest of his life.
But if he continued to pester Yang Xiaofei, he would have to face the consequences.
The message also claimed that Yang Xiaofei didn’t like him and was in love with someone else, telling him that a toad shouldn’t dream of eating swan meat.
Wang Chenning glanced at it twice before deleting it.
’Hmph. Let whoever wants to eat some stone-faced swan meat have at it.’
The place Yang Xiaofei had chosen to meet Wang Chenning was a high-end café near Houhai.
As a waiter led him into the café, Wang Chenning’s eyes were immediately drawn to a tall young woman with an extraordinary air about her, sitting by the window in a corner.
She was gorgeous, with a delicate, sunflower-seed-shaped face, large eyes, and strong brows. She resembled the movie star Li Jiaxin, but was even more beautiful and carried herself with more grace.
The café was quite warm, so the woman had taken off her coat. Her curvaceous figure, outlined by a tight-fitting sweater, was enough to give a man a nosebleed.
This woman, with the body of a devil and the face of an angel, was none other than Yang Xiaofei.
However, she radiated an aura that screamed ’stay away.’ She really was a stone-faced woman.
Not only was Yang Xiaofei beautiful and well-built, but she was also incredibly intelligent. At just twenty-three, she had earned her PhD in International Finance from Imperial College London. After returning to China, she won her grandfather’s approval to take over the family business, becoming the de facto controller of Lingyang Group, a Fortune 500 company.
This was a woman most people could only admire from afar.
"Hello, I’m Wang Chenning." Walking up to Yang Xiaofei’s table, Wang Chenning greeted her politely and then apologized, "Sorry, I’m late."
"I just arrived myself." Yang Xiaofei looked up at Wang Chenning. Though her expression was blank, her voice was quite pleasant. "Mr. Wang, I asked you here today to discuss my feelings about our engagement..."
"I know what you mean." Wang Chenning smiled, interrupting Yang Xiaofei’s words. "I have no objections. Let’s just cancel the engagement."
Yang Xiaofei froze, her brow furrowing slightly.
With a smile, Wang Chenning continued, "I know our families aren’t of equal standing. I also believe we’re not each other’s type. So let’s just drop the matter of the engagement and never bring it up again."
"Are you sure?!" Yang Xiaofei’s gaze turned icy, and the temperature around them seemed to drop by several degrees.
"I’m sure. And I don’t need any compensation." Wang Chenning nodded, then pulled a folded piece of paper from his pocket and placed it in front of Yang Xiaofei. "This is a prescription I formulated especially for you. If you need it, take it as written. One course of treatment is half a year. While it can’t cure you, it can effectively suppress your allergic condition."
He paused, then placed a small vial in front of her. "This is a medicine for regulating a woman’s body. It can effectively relieve discomfort during your period, especially the bloating and tenderness in your lower abdomen and chest. If I’m not mistaken, you’ll be needing it in the next few days."
Yang Xiaofei looked up at Wang Chenning, a trace of humiliated anger in her icy gaze. She was debating whether or not to dump the cup of coffee in front of her on his head.
"You should avoid coffee for the next few days," Wang Chenning said, looking at her calmly. "If there’s nothing else, I’ll be going. Goodbye."
With that, he gave a slight nod and gracefully departed.
’That woman is just too beautiful,’ he thought. ’Her devilish figure is too much of a shock to the system. If I stay any longer, my resolve might waver.’
He felt a sense of relief wash over him as he walked out of the café.
After he rounded a corner, a few young men got out of two nearby luxury cars and walked toward him.
"You Wang Chenning?" the one in the lead asked, his tone slightly flippant.
"I am. What’s it to you?" Wang Chenning glanced at them, his eyes finally landing on a strikingly handsome man with a small ponytail leaning against one of the cars.
’This guy, who could pass for a beautiful woman with just a little makeup, must be their leader.’
The young man who had spoken pointed a finger at Wang Chenning’s head and barked arrogantly, "Listen up! Don’t get any funny ideas about Miss Yang, or you’ll be in big trouble!"
The others chimed in, jeering, "Yeah, go take a look in the mirror! Does a country bumpkin like you have any right to become the son-in-law of the Yang family?"
Another one threatened viciously, "If you don’t listen, we’ll start by ruining that pretty face of yours today!"
Wang Chenning smiled faintly, then suddenly shot out a hand and grabbed the first young man by the throat. "Who the hell do you think you are, talking to me like that?"
The man immediately gasped for air, his face turning a deep, purplish red.
Everyone was stunned that Wang Chenning had been the first to make a move.
He was alone, and there were more than a dozen of them. Wasn’t this like an egg smashing against a rock?
The handsome man with the ponytail standing at the back narrowed his eyes, his gaze sharpening.
"Let... go... of me!" The young man, still caught in Wang Chenning’s grip, struggled desperately. "You... let me... go!"
Wang Chenning lifted the man by his waist and hurled him several meters away.
Humiliated in front of his friends, the man nearly exploded with rage.
He staggered a few steps to regain his footing, took several deep breaths, and then pointed menacingly at Wang Chenning, roaring, "Who the hell do you think you are? You dare hit me..."
A smile reappeared on Wang Chenning’s face. "So what if I hit you?"
"Fucker, believe it or not..." The man’s furious threat was cut short as he suddenly lost his balance. He swayed for a moment before dropping to his knees with a THUD in front of Wang Chenning...
Everyone was dumbfounded.
