Chapter 147: Chapter 147: Surprise, Surprise
This year’s Traditional Chinese Medicine annual conference was held at the five-star Yandu Grand Hotel.
By the time Wang Chenning and Yang Xiaofei walked into the conference hall, the opening ceremony was already drawing to a close.
Their dalliance on the way over had created a subtle new dynamic between them.
Yang Xiaofei wasn’t angry. Sensing this, Wang Chenning grew even bolder.
When they got out of the car, he took the initiative and grabbed her hand. Yang Xiaofei struggled for a moment but couldn’t break free, so she relented and let him hold it.
After walking for a bit, she looped her arm through his, just as she had before, but she was careful not to give Wang Chenning any chance to brush up against her.
However, once they were just outside the conference hall, Yang Xiaofei forcefully pulled her hand away.
As fate would have it, just as the two of them were tiptoeing into the hall, Lu Yuanshan was at the podium, giving his address.
As the vice-principal of the University of Traditional Chinese Medicine—Huaxia’s most prestigious institution for traditional medicine—and the president of its First Affiliated Hospital, Lu Yuanshan held a very high standing in the community.
Lu Yuanshan was a pragmatist. His speech was almost entirely devoid of pompous, empty theories, focusing instead on practical matters.
Toward the end of his speech, he brought up Wang Chenning. He recounted the miracles Wang Chenning had performed, as well as his subsequent clinical work at the First Affiliated Hospital and Yandu Hospital.
He said that if the world of traditional medicine had thousands upon thousands of young people like Wang Chenning—people who were diligent in their study of medical principles and techniques—then the revitalization of traditional medicine would be just around the corner.
Lu Yuanshan’s effusive praise for Wang Chenning immediately sparked a flurry of discussion among the guests in the audience.
When Lu Yuanshan went on to say that Wang Chenning’s achievements in acupuncture were even greater—that he not only knew multiple miraculous needle techniques but had also integrated and mastered them—the audience erupted.
"The Heaven-Penetrating Coolness and Mountain-Burning Fire Needle Skill are like legendary secret manuals in the world of martial arts. In the hands of a master, they are wielded with divine, perfected skill, capable of curing illnesses instantly. I have immersed myself in these techniques for decades and still haven’t mastered them. A young man in his twenties has already mastered both? I refuse to believe it!"
"This little punk knows the Taiyi Divine Needle? Are you kidding me?"
"The number of people who know the true method of the Taiyi Divine Needle can be counted on one hand. As for those who have learned the complete set, I’m certain there isn’t a single one. And some wet-behind-the-ears kid dares to claim he knows the true Taiyi Divine Needle? Is he playing us for fools?"
The Taiyi Divine Needle technique was first recorded in Sun Simiao’s works during the Tang Dynasty. It was revered for its miraculous healing effects. A specialized text was written during the Qing Dynasty, but the technique was lost during the frequent wars of the late Qing period—a great source of regret for countless masters of traditional medicine.
As the original texts were lost, the true subtleties of the technique faded into obscurity. However, many of the techniques used by today’s masters of traditional medicine—including the Thunder Fire Divine Needle, the Ghost Gate Thirteen Needles, and the Three Talents Needle Technique—were derived from it. Even without knowing its original intricacies, the mere fact that so many famous modern techniques were born from it is a testament to its miraculous power.
Mastering even a portion of the Taiyi Divine Needle—or just its derivative techniques like the Mountain-Burning Fire Needle Skill and Heaven-Penetrating Coolness—was already considered a major accomplishment.
And those who reached such a level of mastery were never young.
Very few people could believe that Wang Chenning, a young man who wasn’t even thirty, had mastered so many miraculous techniques.
The influential figures in the world of traditional medicine were all old-timers. These men were somewhat out of touch with modern society; they rarely watched TV, didn’t use smartphones, and had no contact with social media. For the most part, they remained entrenched in their own traditional circles.
Most of the people in attendance were unaware of the recent stir Wang Chenning had caused in Yandu.
So when Principal Lu introduced Wang Chenning this way at the annual conference, heaping such extraordinary praise upon him, they were immediately incensed.
Seeing the atmosphere in the hall, Yang Xiaofei gave Wang Chenning a mischievous look. "Surprised? Shocked? Looks like you’ve become public enemy number one."
"Are you enjoying this?" Wang Chenning leaned close to Yang Xiaofei. "So much for your poker face. Are you really that happy to see them trashing me?"
Yang Xiaofei rolled her eyes. "I am happy. And I feel like it. What are you gonna do about it?"
Wang Chenning reached out and gave her waist a pinch. Yang Xiaofei let out a soft yelp and fell against him.
Wang Chenning seized the opportunity to take a little advantage of the situation. Just as Yang Xiaofei was about to erupt in angry embarrassment, he lowered his voice and threatened, "Next time you kick me while I’m down, just you wait and see how I’ll deal with you!"
There were too many people in the hall for Yang Xiaofei to make a scene. After putting a little distance between them, she said with a huff, "I’d like to see you try!"
"The next time I give you acupuncture, I hope you’ve taken the proper precautions. Otherwise... heh heh!"
Yang Xiaofei just rolled her eyes.
Lu Yuanshan wasn’t at all surprised by the massive reaction his introduction had caused. He picked up the microphone, walked to the front of the stage, and held up his hands, gesturing for the crowd to quiet down.
"Wang Chenning is also here with us today. If any of you have questions, you can ask him directly!" He then pointed in the direction where Wang Chenning was seated.
Instantly, every eye in the room turned toward where Wang Chenning and Yang Xiaofei were sitting.
When they saw that it was such a handsome young man, accompanied by an equally beautiful woman, some of the old-timers grew even more furious.
Wang Chenning hadn’t expected Lu Yuanshan to pull a stunt like this, but he wasn’t one to suffer from stage fright. He gestured to a staff member, signaling for a microphone.
After a staff member handed him a microphone, he rose calmly to his feet. He gave the crowd a traditional cupped-fist salute and then spoke loudly, "I am Wang Chenning. And what Principal Lu just said... wasn’t entirely accurate!"
The hall erupted in an uproar once more, this time peppered with the angry shouts of some of the old-timers.
’Lu Yuanshan felt a bit awkward. He knew Wang Chenning was getting him back, but there was nothing he could do about it.’
Wang Chenning continued, "In fact, I know even more techniques than he mentioned. He was downplaying my abilities!"
Those words from Wang Chenning instantly provoked the fury of the entire crowd.
The resulting uproar was so explosive it nearly blew the roof off the hall.
