Chapter 160: Chapter 160: She Came Too

Wang Chenning reacted quickly, making the introductions. "This is a comrade from the special front who came to me for treatment after being injured. And this is Miss Yang Xiaofei, the President of Lingyang Group!"

Yang Xiaofei’s expression rapidly shifted from shock and anger to placid calm. She extended a hand to Wu Ziyue, her face devoid of emotion. "Hello, I’m Yang Xiaofei."

"Hello," Wu Ziyue replied, her own expression just as blank as she looked at Yang Xiaofei.

The two women shook hands briefly before letting go.

"Have a seat for a moment. After I’m done with her treatment, we can go to the conference together." Wang Chenning’s expression barely changed. He casually gestured for Yang Xiaofei to sit down before turning to Wu Ziyue. "Go dry your hair first."

Wu Ziyue said nothing, simply nodding before she entered her guest room.

After Wu Ziyue had gone into her room, Wang Chenning explained to Yang Xiaofei in a low voice, "She’s a hero who fought for our country and was disfigured by her injuries. She was originally a very beautiful woman, but after the disfigurement, she couldn’t even live in the light of day. I couldn’t bear to see her like that, so I took the initiative and offered to her superiors that I could help treat her."

Hearing Wang Chenning explain Wu Ziyue’s past, Yang Xiaofei was visibly moved.

"They are heroes of our nation." She nodded lightly. "You have to heal her. Don’t let her live the rest of her life with this regret."

Wang Chenning nodded.

Once Wu Ziyue was ready, Wang Chenning went in to begin her treatment.

Yang Xiaofei sat alone in the living room, reading a book. She didn’t let her curiosity get the better of her and go in to watch.

"Did you tell her about me?" Wu Ziyue asked with a blank expression as Wang Chenning entered. "Is she your girlfriend?"

"No, she’s my fiancée." Wang Chenning didn’t hide it, briefly explaining the situation before adding with a wry smile, "Though at this point, I don’t even know if our engagement is still valid."

"She was jealous just now," Wu Ziyue said softly. "The way she looked at me was full of hostility."

"Alright, don’t you worry about that." Wang Chenning cut the chatter and had Wu Ziyue lie down for her treatment.

The treatment lasted for over an hour. The entire time, Yang Xiaofei remained outside, reading her book.

Wu Ziyue’s recovery was going quite well. Although the muscles in her face were still a bit stiff, the features of a beautiful woman were already beginning to emerge.

Her figure also appeared more graceful. The more Wang Chenning looked, the more satisfied he felt.

Wu Ziyue, too, grew more satisfied the more she looked.

"How many more days until I can return to my unit?" she asked softly as the treatment concluded.

"Another three days, but five would be best," Wang Chenning said after a moment’s thought. He smiled. "After that, you’ll just need to see me about once a week. It won’t really be for treatment, more to solidify the effects we’ve achieved."

"Deal." Wu Ziyue nodded, then said briskly, "Go on out and be with your fiancée. She’s been waiting for you for a long time."

Wang Chenning didn’t say much else. He packed up his things and went out.

Yang Xiaofei was still sitting there reading. Seeing Wang Chenning emerge, she glanced up and asked softly, "Is it over?"

"All done." Wang Chenning wiped a bead of sweat from his brow and smiled. "It’s an amazing feeling to watch someone get a new lease on life thanks to my treatment. It’s especially fulfilling when I can save someone from a situation like your grandfather’s."

"You’re a good doctor," Yang Xiaofei said, giving Wang Chenning a mischievous look. Then came the twist: "But not a good man."

"..." Wang Chenning couldn’t be bothered to bicker with Yang Xiaofei and went to take a shower.

After his shower, Wang Chenning and Yang Xiaofei headed to the conference venue together.

Wang Chenning’s chaotic appearance the day before had thrown the entire conference agenda into disarray.

The official approval for the establishment of an experimental team headed by Wang Chenning had become the focal point of the conference.

After an emergency deliberation, the National Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine had agreed in principle to form a traditional medicine research team based at the University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, with Wang Chenning as its leader.

However, the specifics of how the team would be assembled and how it would operate still needed to be discussed thoroughly.

In truth, Wang Chenning wasn’t in any hurry to assemble his team. He had just arrived in Yandu, hadn’t familiarized himself with everything, and didn’t even know how long he would ultimately stay.

Besides, he had just gotten to know these beautiful girls, and their relationships hadn’t progressed any further. He needed to solidify those gains first.

’Weren’t the matters of life just the little things between a man and a woman, and all the damn trouble that stemmed from it?’

Right now, he didn’t lack money or fame, only women.

Moreover, he preferred having people come to him, rather than seeking them out. By first building up hype around forming the team, he could make those with ambition fight over the opportunity to join, which would only highlight his own importance.

No one cherishes what comes easily. If people had to fight tooth and nail for a spot on his team, those spots would seem all the more precious.

The buzz generated from the exposure at this one conference wasn’t enough. He needed another opportunity. That’s why he had taken the initiative to state that everything should just follow the official procedures.

And that opportunity presented itself at the end of the conference.

At the closing ceremony, after the head of the National Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine declared that the formation of Wang Chenning’s team and the establishment of his experimental center were major events for the year, he also announced another important matter.

At the invitation of the traditional medical associations of Japan and South Korea, the Huaxia Traditional Medical Association would be assembling a delegation for an academic exchange visit to Tokyo and Seoul.

The members of the delegation would be selected from across the country by the National Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine and the National Health Commission. The candidates would primarily be individuals who had achieved success in traditional medical practice and research, with a focus on young and middle-aged core talent. In principle, they could be no older than sixty, and a selection of gifted medical students from schools of traditional medicine would also be chosen to join.

After announcing the event, the head of the National Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine singled out Wang Chenning on the spot, urging him to be sure to make time to participate in the exchange program.

Lu Yuanshan immediately spoke up, promising to arrange Wang Chenning’s teaching schedule to ensure he had ample time for the exchange program.

"Alright, I’ll be there," Wang Chenning could only agree on the spot.

"Take me with you!" Chang Qingfeng immediately sent Wang Chenning a text. "As your only disciple right now, I have to stay by your side. If you need anything then, just give the order!"

"No problem," Wang Chenning readily agreed. This was a perfect chance to test Chang Qingfeng and see if his deference was genuine.

’I can also use him as a servant.’

And so, the traditional medicine conference that Wang Chenning had originally not wanted to attend concluded with him as its biggest winner.

Yang Xiaofei also reaped considerable rewards. She became the most sought-after person at the event besides Wang Chenning, with a great many people expressing interest in cooperating with her companies.

What Wang Chenning hadn’t expected was that, just as the conference was about to conclude, Zhao Xiao’an showed up.

She appeared at the venue in her capacity as a reporter, accompanied by several colleagues. They were there to film a segment on the closing ceremony and interview a few key figures.

The moment Zhao Xiao’an appeared in the hall, the expressions on both Wang Chenning’s and Yang Xiaofei’s faces changed.
